No, it was earlier than that.
Southern Miss was the best mid-major in the south for about 10 years (early 80s-early 90s). They also upset FSU one year, which was Favre, I believe.

In looking up some stuff for 2019 LSU, I got into looking at best offenses. And there's one way off the radar, but was even better than that LSU one.
2018 Oklahoma

Okay, so yeah, Heisman winner at QB Murray. 69% comp, 4300 yds, 42 TD, 7 INT, 199 rating
Great. So?
Umm, they came thisclose to having three 1,000 rushers!!!

2017 UGA was very good, not unreal, and they caught quite the spanking from Auburn during the regular season.

2014 Oregon I wasn’t exactly obliterated, but they also caught a pretty one-sides loss in the title game.

2013 Oregon also had a pretty good power rating by the end of the year, and they got slapped by Arizona to take their second loss.

Oh, 2011 LSU. All of 2.1 yards per play in the title game.
