B1G Week 7
« on: December 01, 2020, 11:06:57 AM »
So Northwestern @ Minnesota has already been cancelled due to an outbreak in Minneapolis while Maryland @ Michigan and Ohio State at Michigan State are questionable at best due to outbreaks in Ann Arbor and Columbus.

Specifically, according to the Detroit News, Michigan paused team activities on Monday, November 30 while awaiting word on presumptive positive COVID tests.  In Columbus, Ryan Day is out with COVID and will be unable to coach even if the team can play and the other two teams that had to cancel a game this year due to COVID (UW and UMD) also had to cancel a second game.

So there seems to be a possibility that, along with NU, either MSU or UMD or both will also be available.  If both MSU and UMD are available the obvious choice would be for them to play since their scheduled game on 11/21 was cancelled due to the Maryland outbreak.

If NU and UMD are both without opponents this weekend then they could play.   They already played once (a 43-3 NU win opening weekend in Evanston).

If NU and MSU are both without opponents this weekend it would be weird to have a rematch of their game from last weekend but seems better than not playing.  That is, unless you are NU.  If the Wildcats simply don't play this weekend they clinch a spot in the B1GCG but if they play and lose two more games that would open the door for Iowa (and possibly Wisconsin if they can find a way to get eligible).

This weekend's match-ups per our current Power Rankings:
  • #1 tOSU @ #11 MSU <--Cancellation possible due to COVID outbreak at tOSU
  • #2 IU @ #3 UW
  • #4 NU off due to COVID
  • #5 IA @ #12 IL
  • #6 UMD @ #13 M <--Cancellation possible due to probable COVID outbreak at M
  • #7 PU vs #14 UNL
  • #8 MN off due to COVID
  • #9/10 PSU @ #9/10 RU

In terms of match-ups, the PSU/RU game should be exciting.  We've got them tied in the rankings for 9th/10th so a game between them should settle that.

In four of the other five games the higher ranked team is on the road and that tends to contribute to upsets so that should be fun.  The one higher ranked team that IS at home is Purdue but they have been trending down while Nebraska might be improved?

Updated for the updated Power Rankings and recent cancellation:
  • #1 tOSU at #12 MSU <--Cancellation possible due to COVID outbreak at tOSU and tOSU coach Ryan Day will not attend even if played
  • #2 IU at #3 UW
  • #4/5 IA at #11 IL
  • #4/5 NU off due to COVID <--in theory they could play UMD again but sources say not likely
  • #6 UMD off due to COVID
  • #7 PU vs #13 UNL
  • #8 PSU at #9 RU
  • #10 MN off due to COVID
  • #14 M off due to COVID

We are now down to five games and the higher ranked team is on the road in four of them.  The lone exception is #7 PU hosting #13 UNL.

Ohio State is gearing up to play MSU this weekend, without Coach Day, and will be short-handed from a player perspective. I do not see MSU giving a short-handed Ohio State team a game.

MSU shows up in big games. They took down Big Sister, and knocked off a top ten team. Plus OSU hasn't exactly been burying teams. Rutgers even gave them a game.

Without revealing names, coach Jeff Brohm says “a handful” of Purdue players have opted out of the remainder of the season.

Ugh.

I don't want to watch any more of the 2020 season... And yet I know I will.

Unless it's the whole QB room, I don't think it matters.

MSU did play OSU well last year, I think it was 0-0 after 1...and still lost by 3 scores

It matters if it's actually a game into the 4th quarter

much more entertaining

As an Ohio State fan, I'm concerned about this weekend's game.  There are a number of reasons including:

First, MSU always seems to play up for tOSU.  I'm sure everybody here remembers MSU knocking off what was, IMHO, one of the best tOSU teams ever in 2015.  In the four years since that tOSU has gone 4-0 against the Spartans but several games were a lot closer than you would expect just from the records:

  • 2016:  A tOSU team that finished 11-2 beat an MSU team that finished 3-9 by a single point on a failed 2pt conversion by MSU in the closing minutes.
  • 2017:  A tOSU team that finished 12-2 beat an MSU team that finished 10-3 by 45 points.  I will note that tOSU was coming off of a bad loss to Iowa and basically took their frustrations out on MSU.
  • 2018:  A tOSU team that finished 13-1 beat  an MSU team that finished 7-6 by 20 points.
  • 2019:  A tOSU team that finished 13-1 beat an MSU team that finished 7-6 by 24 points.

Second, after not playing last week and being off for a while due to COVID I am concerned that the Buckeyes could look a little lethargic and/or rusty.

Third, they haven't told us exactly who is out, but we know that tOSU will be "short handed".

Fourth, apparently Texas and Urban Meyer are in some stage of talks and from the anonymous sources quoted it sounds like Meyer may have reached out to multiple tOSU assistant coaches who used to work for him.  This is concerning because guys planning a move or even thinking about whether or not to move aren't 100% focused on the job at hand.

Fifth, and this actually should be #1, I just have no idea what to expect out of MSU.  In three of their five games (IU, IA, and RU) the Spartans have looked dreadful.  Their performance against each of those teams is worse than any other team against that opponent this year.  However, in their other two games the Spartans have a road win in Ann Arbor and the only win so far this year against Northwestern.  Who knows.

Just like MSU couldn't give Northwestern a game?
