Note:
I did NOT include @FearlessF 's vote from last week because:

  • He didn't vote until Friday, and
  • He forgot to include Maryland.

I think that's on purpose.

Apparently because he did it again this week. Hey @FearlessF , please add Maryland into your rankings.

This isn't my ranking, just a reference, ranking of B1G teams based on relative performance against league opponents thus far:

As discussed at length last week with @Mdot21 , this is based purely on the raw score differential.  I do NOT make any adjustments for "garbage time" scores, injuries, etc because I want this to be purely objective.

Also, all B1G teams have played either four or five opponents.  In order for this to be comparable, the opponents of the teams that have played four opponents are ranked 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 while the opponents of the teams that have played five opponents are ranked 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

The rankings:

  • 1.375 Ohio State:  The Buckeyes are best against all of their opponents.  Best of five against UW and best of four against IA, MSU, and RU.
  • 1.5 Michigan:  The Wolverines are best against all of their opponents that haven't also played tOSU.
  • 2.625 Penn State
  • 2.7 Purdue
  • 2.8 Wisconsin
  • 3.0 Iowa
  • 3.1 Maryland
  • 3.25 Illinois
  • 3.4 Indiana
  • 3.5 Nebraska
  • 3.5 (tie) Michigan State
  • 3.625 Rutgers
  • 3.75 Northwestern
  • 3.875 Minnesota

Wow does that make Minnesota look awful.  They are:

  • Third of four against IL, better than UW but worse than IU and IA.
  • Fourth of four against PSU, worse than M, PU, and NU.
  • Worst of five against PU, worse than UW, PSU, UMD, and UNL.
  • Second of four against MSU, worse than tOSU but better than UMD and UW.

Last week in parentheses
  • MICHIGAN (1) - bye week
  • OHIO STATE (2) - weekly tradition of briefly giving an inferior opponent a moment of 1st quarter hope
  • PENN STATE (3) - now that is how you bounce back
  • ILLINOIS (4) - bye week
  • MARYLAND (5) - survived without Taulia, but, woof
  • WISCONSIN (10) - now I'm confused as to how they lost at MSU last week
  • PURDUE (6) - battling Minnesota for biggest wasted opportunity of a season
  • IOWA (7) - woof
  • MINNESOTA (8) - see Purdue
  • MICHIGAN STATE (9) - bye week
  • NEBRASKA (11) - bye week
  • RUTGERS (13) - finally won a home Big Ten game
  • INDIANA (12) - really regretting that Tom Allen extension
  • NORTHWESTERN (14) - bye week?

I've been trying to square that circle too. In their last three the Badgers have great looking wins over NU and PU and . . . that loss in East Lansing.

I am beginning to think the real fluke was Minn's blowout win over MSU.

Turnovers, penalties and injured players in the secondary and OL.

Wisconsin was just -1 in TO, and that was sort of negated by MSU being 0-2 on 4th down, compared to 2-2 for Wisconsin.

MSU also had 9 penalties for 103 yards compared to 8 for 72 yards for Wisconsin

Just 283 yards of offense for Wisconsin against what had been the worst defense in the Big Ten was the major problem.

Injuries to OL and secondary, and critical penalties at critical times (PI). Combine that with a shitty game plan and you're gonna lose on the road every time.

I think they went in believing they could stop MSU cold and play the game not to lose on offense. That all blew up.
