IMHO, if the B1G had not changed the rule, the CG would have been between the league's third (IU) and fourth (NU) best teams.

  • Ohio St. - Doesn't need better matchup to qualify for CFB Playoffs; played nobody, would have played nobody if they did play.
  • Indiana - Played nobody.
  • Iowa - Two keys to win over Wisc. #1 - Iowa needed QB Petras to drop pack 7-8-yards, not 5-yards to throw because Wisc. was pushing Iowa's o-line back, and this 2nd half adjustment was made. #2 - the 2-point conversion in 3rd Qtr. forced Wisc. to go for it on 4th downs, and most times Wisc. was stopped. Iowans are accustomed to losing to Wisc. When Iowa wins, it is sweeter.
  • Northwestern - I still cannot get it out of my brain - NU lost to MSU, so they get docked.
  • Wisconsin - I had Maryland #6 last week, and I can't move Maryland up, through no fault of my own.
  • Minnesota - Nebraska is better than they appear, yet Minnesota defeated Nebraska.
  • Maryland - Fortunate to be in the Big Ten. The basketball team is better.
  • Penn St
  • Nebraska
  • Rutgers
  • Purdue
  • Michigan
  • Illinois
  • Michigan St.

The lesser teams are really difficult to sort out, starting with Minnesota.

1. Ohio State: I'm just hoping we actually get a game next week
2. Iowa: They've rounded into a pretty strong team.  The Hoosiers lost Penix, so I think Iowa slots in here a little better.
3. Northwestern: 2020 Tressel Ball has arrived
4. Indiana: I liked what I saw out of Tuttle, but I also have to downgrade them.
5. Wisconsin: Kind of crazy this team is 2-3. They are able to whip lesser teams but can't score on good teams. Ruined a great defense.
6. Penn State: Steadied the ship
7. Minnesota: As bad as they looked at the beginning of the season, they have really gotten right despite missing half their team
8. Maryland: They seem to have something going on offense.  An interesting team next year.
9. Rutgers: A spunky team that won't quit
10. Michigan: Never quite came together
11. Purdue: I'm really just shooting craps with these teams.  Disappointing season
12. Nebraska: I don't know what to make of them
13. Michigan State: A bit of hope with their quarterback and receivers
14. Illinois: Gotta put someone here.

MSU  got up for M & NU then crapped the bed.Hope they have a good class coming in.I agree Iowa seems the best of the rest though UW's roster was short sheeted.Would love to see Indiana w/Penix

Schiano did a good job this season, they're playing with an edge that has been missing since.....he was last there. The Vols missed out on a good one - they deserve mediocrity.
Fun Fact Schiano is 5-1 in Bowls

1. OSU
2. Iowa
I would have to say Iowa gave Wisconsin their worst defeat of 2020.  Iowa's defense has not allowed more than 24 points in a game since 2018.
3.  NW
NW got a chance to prove how good they are against an over-matched ILL team.
4.  Indiana
Hopefully the Big Ten will pair up Indiana and Iowa during champions week, so Indiana will get their chance to silence all their doubters.
5.  Wisconsin
May be only 2-3,  but the 3 losses are to NW, Indy and Iowa.  Hopefully Wiscy will get to play Minny during champions week.
6.  PSU
Winning 3 in a row means something
7.Minnesota
Huh,  Minnesota is 3-3?  They had such an awful start,  but didn't give up.
8.  MD
I could have easily left MD at #6.
9.  Rutgers
Huh,  Rutgers at #9?  I can't believe I just typed that!!!
10.  Neb
Agree that this team is a paradox.
11.  Purdue
Looked like a good team early in the year but just fell apart down the stretch
12.  MSU
About 1 out of 3 games,  a good team shows up
13.  Mich
Has just looked bad since game 2.
14.  ILL
ILL has not looked good the last 2 weeks.

1. Ohio State - I would like to see them play Iowa at this point as I believe that Iowa has emerged as the best team in the West.
2. Iowa - What are they, 4 points from being undefeated? They are playing some really good football now.
3. Indiana - Would be number 2, but Iowa is playing some really good ball right now.
4. Northwestern - Coach Fitz will have them ready to play Sat. Should be a good game.
.
.
.
5. Penn State - They finally appear to be playing like they are capable of. Have to give Coach Franklin credit for not letting them just quit on the season.
5. Minnesota - Best of the rest?
7. Wisconsin - My how far they have fallen since the beginning of the season.
8. Rutgers - I have no idea how to rank these next teams. Shot in the dark here.
9. Maryland
10. Purdue
11. Michigan State
12. Nebraska
13. Michigan
14. Illinois

My now usual weekly tabulation of how each team has done against their opponents relative to their opponents' opponents.

Note that this is simply a comparison of raw score differential with the caveats that:

  • Ties are split.  Ie, two teams tied for 1st/2nd get 1.5 each.
  • Games decided in OT are considered closer than games decided in regulation.  Ie, winning by 1 in regulation is considered to be a "bigger" win than winning by 8 in OT.
  • For the three teams that have played eight games (PSU, RU, IA), their opponents are ranked 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.
  • For the five teams that have played seven games (IU, MSU, NU, IL, UNL) their opponents are ranked 1.5-2.5-3.5-4.5-5.5-6.5-7.5.
  • For the three teams that have played six games (M, MN, PU) their opponents are ranked 2-3-4-5-6-7.
  • For the three teams that have played five games (tOSU, UMD, UW) their opponents are ranked 2.5-3.5-4.5-5.5.6.5.
  • Note that for the teams that have played less than eight games, the rankings of their opponents are the average of possible ranks IF that team had played the full eight.

Not my rankings but here are the rankings per this metric:
  • 1.90 tOSU:  Best of eight against RU (1.0), best of seven against UNL and IU (1.5), second of seven against MSU (2.5), third of eight against PSU (3.0).
  • 2.94 Iowa:  Best of eight against PSU (1.0), best of seven against MSU (1.5), best of six against MN (2.0), best of five against UW (2.5), second of seven against NU (2.5), third of seven against UNL (3.5), fourth of seven against IL (4.5), last of six against PU (6.0).
  • 3.50 Indiana:  Best of five against tOSU (2.5), tied for 2nd/3rd of eight against RU (2.5), second of six against M (3.0), second of five against UMD (3.5), third of seven against MSU (3.5), third of five against UW (4.5), fifth of eight against PSU (5.0).
  • 3.70 Wisconsin:  Best of seven against IL (1.5), best of six against M (2.0), third of seven against IU (3.5), fifth of seven against NU (5.5), sixth of eight against IA (6.0).
  • 4.00 Northwestern:  Second of eight against IA (2.0), best of five against UMD (2.5), second of five against UW (3.5), third of seven against IL (3.5), tied for 2nd/3rd of six against PU (3.5), fifth of seven against UN (5.5), last of seven against MSU (7.5).
  • 4.63 Penn State:  Second of seven against IU (2.5), tied for 2nd/3rd of eight against RU (2.5), second of five against tOSU (3.5), third of six against M (4.0), fourth of seven against MSU (4.5), sixth of seven against UNL (6.5), last of five against UMD (6.5), seventh of eight against IA (7.0).
  • 4.64 Nebraska:  Best of six against PU (2.0), third of eight against IA (3.0), fourth of eight against PSU (4.0), fourth of seven against NU (4.5), fourth of five against tOSU (4.5), fifth of six against MN (6.0), last of seven against IL (7.5).
  • 4.90 Maryland:  Second of eight against PSU (2.0), third of six against MN (4.0), tied for 4th/5th of seven against IU (5.0), sixth of eight against RU (6.0), last of seven against NU (7.5).
  • 4.92 Minnesota:  Second of seven against IL (2.5), fourth of seven against UNL (4.5), fifth of eight against IA (5.0), fourth of seven against PU (5.0), fourth of five against UMD (5.5), last of six against M (7.0).
