I am not doing this- because Medina gets mad at me.

having said that:  What has Michigan done? Clubbed 2 HORRIBLE teams that may be among the 2-3 worst teams in FBS?
I question things, I don't get mad.

I think the top is anyone's guess right now. Ohio State's win over ND was a top-5 win at the time but now it is a rather unimpressive 11 point win over an unranked, 0-2 team. Ohio State's other win is a ho-hum win over a very bad team. Ohio State has done nothing to definitively claim the #1 spot but these performances also aren't bad enough to necessitate dropping them in the absence of a strong claimant.

As far as potential claimants, I agree with your statement above wrt Michigan and nearly the same can be said about PSU, MSU, and MN so for now I'll just leave tOSU at #1 but with the understanding that the spot is basically available.

FWIW, this weekend the Buckeyes, Wolverines, and Gophers are all 3+ TD home favorites over cupcakes so we aren't likely to learn much about any of them but the Nittany Lions and Spartans are both playing road games against undefeated teams and have 3 point spreads so they have opportunities to prove something.

Although they are lower in our rankings, I would also add Indiana and Maryland as undefeated teams playing good Group of 5 teams this weekend.

Last week in parentheses

  • MICHIGAN (2) - not that they've done anything impressive, simply that OSU having as much trouble as they did against ND looks bad now
  • OHIO STATE (1) - see above
  • PENN STATE (4) - way to avoid any doubt in a trap game
  • MICHIGAN STATE (5) - Thorne continues to look off, but the defensive front seven looks outright nasty
  • MINNESOTA (6) - did what they were expected to
  • PURDUE (8) - FCS win
  • WISCONSIN (3) - 4.0 ypc against a Washington State defense?
  • IOWA (7) - I guess the defense knows they can't give up 8
  • MARYLAND (10) - September Maryland always looks good
  • INDIANA (9) - considering Idaho nearly beat Washington State, maybe struggling for a half isn't the worst thing
  • ILLINOIS (13) - Bert is one defensive stand away from Illinois' first 3-0 start since 2011
  • RUTGERS (11) - you never yawn a 59 point win for Rutgers
  • NORTHWESTERN (14) - getting dominated at home by Duke, and yet moving up, because...
  • NEBRASKA (12) - ...I can no longer say Week 0 was a fluke

Are we dismissing the possibility that OSU might have beaten ND twice?

Highly possible, but with these Power Rankings we can only go on the data we have so far.  ND is kind of broken now with their starting QB out for the year, so it probably won't be looked at as a quality win going forward.  I think the Buckeyes have a pretty interesting game this week against MAC favorite, Toledo.  If the Buckeyes win convincingly, they can retake/solidify that #1 spot, but if they struggle to put them away, then I think it would be time to move them down to #2 or #3.  I also am fully prepared to put Penn State #1 if they demolish Auburn.

My thoughts exactly. Ohio State will drop to 0-3 ATS so far this year unless they demolish Toledo. One or two is maybe random but 0-3 ATS is definitely a trend. Then there are the other contenders to consider:
  • Michigan: They haven't proven anything either way so far and that is unlikely to change until at least October 1 (Iowa) and with the look of Iowa's offense we might not get a real look at Michigan until October 15 (PSU).
  • Penn State: I don't feel confident in my assessment of Purdue yet so I'm not sure if I should ding PSU for the close win or credit them for the road win and beating up MAC teams is expected of top (or even middling) B1G teams so the win over the Bobcats proves nothing. Now if they walk into Jordan-Hare and beat the daylights out of the Tigers, I'll definitely move them to #1.
  • Michigan State: They have two blowout wins but they are over two MAC teams so I don't think we know yet. If they walk into Husky Stadium and beat the daylights out of the Huskies I'll probably move them up but I'm not sure how much because I'm not yet sure how good Washington is either. That said, road wins on the West Coast aren't common for B1G teams.
  • Minnesota: They are 2-0 with two blowout wins but their two opponents are a combined 0-5 and this week's opponent is 0-2 so it is not unlikely that after this weekend the Gophers will be 3-0 against three teams that are a combined 0-10. Minnesota isn't going to get a chance to prove anything until they travel to East Lansing next weekend.
  • The only other undefeated teams in the B1G are the rest of the teams in the B1G-E but I feel reasonably confident that while Indiana, Rutgers, and/or Maryland may be better than some of the teams above, they probably aren't better than all of them.

It is definitely a possibility. The Notre Dame/Ohio State game ended up being a tough, physical game and the mental state of teen and 20-something players IS a factor in this sport.

That said, unfortunately we aren't likely to ever really know. Unless Buchner's backup looks REALLY good, Notre Dame is likely to take a big step back so the Buckeyes probably beat a better team in their opener than it will appear in December.

OTOH, I don't believe that tOSU beat a legitimate top-5 team even with Buchner so it may balance out a bit.

Grr!  I had my vote all set and clicked "Post" then the site hiccuped and it got lost and I had to start over.  Anyway:

Format is votes are chronological from L->R:

  • Ohio State (1,1), the Buckeyes have been far from awe-inspiring but I haven't seen enough out of any of the other contenders to move them up so I'll hold serve and wait for more information.
  • Michigan (2,2), see above.
  • Penn State (4,4), as noted upthread, if they dominate the Tigers they'll go to #1.
  • Michigan State (5,5), if they dominate the Huskies . . .
  • Minnesota (6,8), as noted upthread, there is a not unlikely possibility that the Gophers could move to 3-0 this weekend against three teams that are a combined 0-10.
  • Wisconsin (3,3), that loss on the road would have been one thing but at home, that was BAD.
  • Purdue (7,7), waiting for more information.
  • Maryland (9,12), is this just another September Maryland?
  • Rutgers (10,13), the Scarlet Knights have looked solid so far against mediocre-to-poor opponents and that is an improvement in Piscataway.
  • Illinois (13,9), nice bouncback win.
  • Iowa (8,6), waiting for Iowa's second TD of the season.
  • Indiana (12,10), was the Illinois win a fluke?
  • Northwestern (11,11), I think their win over UNL was more about UNL than NU but I could be wrong.
  • Nebraska (14,14), well beating OU would be a great job interview for the interim coach.

You ranked Rutgers both 7th and 12th and didn't rank Indiana.  Should I assume you meant Rutgers 7th and Indiana 12th?
