B1G Power Rankings, preseason
« on: October 08, 2020, 11:25:20 AM »
Well, it looks like there will be a season after all.  Thus, we need to do our usual B1G Power Rankings!

Results through me (12 voters):

Drop the high and low for each team:

Chart:

Vote distribution:

Here is the chart from last year:

Ohio State and Michigan started out roughly tied for #1 followed by a big gap then PSU, MSU, UW, and Iowa.  Starting in week #2 Ohio State held a slight lead over #2 UW up until they played.  After that the Buckeyes were pretty much alone in first place through the end of the year.  Rutgers was a near-unanimous #14 all year long.

Taken straight from my countdown

  • OHIO STATE - a couple of issues on defense, but just nit picking
  • PENN STATE - stealing Minnesota's OC was the best hire of the offseason, nationally
  • WISCONSIN - he'd never admit it, but COan's injury makes things a little easier on the coaching staff to just roll with Mertz
  • MINNESOTA - offense might be the best in the conference outside of Columbus
  • MICHIGAN - getting Mayfield back is huge, but the offensive line still needs to prove itself quickly
  • IOWA - we'll see how the offseason noise impacts things, I'm guessing very little
  • INDIANA - with equal weapons (and assuming health) I might take Penix over Fields as the conference's top QB
  • NEBRASKA - Frost has gotten off to the worst first two years in Lincoln for any coach since Bill Jennings went 4-16 in '57 and '58
  • MICHIGAN STATE - less talent than a year ago, but better positional coaching probably balances that out
  • PURDUE - most dynamic WR duo in the nation, and a strong DL, but too many questions elsewhere
  • ILLINOIS - if Brandon Peters can even out his performance a bit, I think that jumps them up about 3 spots, to just ahead of Nebraska
  • NORTHWESTERN - offense has to be better than last year, but they had a LONG ways to go
  • MARYLAND - Locksley's goal right now needs to be to perform well enough to maintain recruiting
  • RUTGERS - can't get worse

we'll see what the NCAA does with scholarship limits next year, but this crazy season may help Frost upgrade his roster

Let's see if his AD welcomes that additional $300K/year cost for each of them.

I kinda look at this the same way.

Back in 2004 Michigan and Iowa shared the Big11Ten Championship.  In the fifteen years since Ohio State has nine league titles while UW, MSU, and PSU have three each*.  The other ten schools in the league (M, MN, IL, IA, NU, PU, IU, UNL, UMD, RU) have none.

In the nine years that we have had a B1GCG, one third of them have been tOSU vs UW.  Only one of the nine involved neither tOSU nor UW (2015's MSU over IA game).  The other eight were:
  • tOSU over UW in 2019, 2017, and 2014
  • tOSU over NU in 2018
  • PSU over UW in 2016
  • MSU over tOSU in 2013
  • UW over UNL in 2012
  • UW over MSU in 2011

B1GCG appearances - wins - losses:
  • tOSU - 5 - 4 - 1
  • UW - 6 - 2 - 4
  • MSU - 3 - 2 - 1
  • PSU - 1 - 1- 0
  • NU - 1 - 0 - 1
  • IA - 1 - 0 - 1
  • UNL - 1 - 0 - 1

Interesting that PSU is the lone B1G school to have made at least one appearance and never lost.

I find it difficult to start my rankings with anything other than:
  • Ohio State
  • Wisconsin

*That adds up to 18 titles in 15 years because up until 2011 it was possible to have co-champions.  tOSU and PSU shared titles in 2005 and 2008 while UW and MSU shared it in 2010.

UW needs to get on the winning side of things soon.

Notice since Urbs and Frankie entered the league, they have not won one (except 2012 when OSU and Urbs were not allowed to go).
