They had a whole, big convo on UM and its issues on the Ocho yesterday. They were ridiculous, saying they hadn't had an outright NC in 70 years, one guy chimed in with 'they have the recent history of Wake Forest', etc. It was absurd and obnoxious, etc - garbage TV.
But a point was made that it's not UM, it's not Harbaugh, but the fans who are the problem. They have delusional expectations. I think that's fair.
Michigan is a name program - a helmet, a blue-blood, all of that. But it does have a lack of "color TV" elite success, does it not? Now, I'm not going to sit here and belittle 1997 - that was a legit NC team. I have no idea why anyone would consider it less-than. But yeah, since before my dad was born, UM has 1 NC. That's still paltry for a top-tier helmet program.
So I looked up records for my lifetime - since 1980, and UM is 9th in winning %. That's really good. But there are problems with it, too. OSU is 1st in that time frame. Everyone above them and to 2 spots below them have multiple NCs since 1980, except for Georgia. And if Michigan fans has the same expectations of UGA fans, there wouldn't be a big issue here. But.....they don't. Their mindset is - elite helmet - most wins - best fight song...but the peaks are missing.
Michigan and Georgia are similar programs, unless you're a college football historian. You'd need a leather helmet collection to differentiate the two. But their fanbases are light-years apart, and yes, even with UGA running Richt off, I stand by it.
UM fans think they're an (here in 2019) Alabama or a USC or an Oklahoma...and they're really, objectively not. You could argue whether or not they SHOULD be - but that's irrelevant. I'm talking about what IS.
Anyway, here's the top 11 since I was born:
1 - OSU
2 - FSU
3 - Nebraska
4 - OU
5 - Miami
6 - Florida
7 - Georgia
8 - Alabama
9 - Michigan
10 - Penn St
11 - Clemson
