You'll have to be patient with Michigan fans, this is the first time that they have ever finished any higher than 3rd.

Technically, a team can "clinch a share" of a divisional championship and not make the CG.
You'll have to be patient with Michigan fans, this is the first time that they have ever finished any higher than 3rd.
LoL at what @Brutus Buckeye said.

@Cincydawg is right.  I do agree with you, @Temp430 that it is pretty meaningless with one exception: streaks.  In that regard it matters at least to a fan like me.  In that regard, Ohio State has now won six straight B1G Divisional Championships.  Interestingly, Ohio State has never won a B1G Divisional tiebreaker so all of Ohio State's B1G Divisional Co-Championships resulted in missing the B1GCG:
  • 2011:  First year of Divisional play, tOSU finished fourth in the Leaders
  • 2012:  The Conference declared that even though they were ineligible for the CG, the Buckeyes were the Champions of the B1G-Leaders Division.  (tOSU finished first at 8-0, PSU finished second at 6-2 but was also ineligible so third place 4-4 Wisconsin went to the B1GCG.
  • 2013:  Ohio State won the B1G-Leaders Division outright then lost the B1GCG.
  • 2014:  Ohio State won the B1G-E outright and won the B1GCG.
  • 2015:  Ohio State shared the B1G-E title but lost the tiebreaker to MSU.
  • 2016:  Ohio State shared the B1G-E title but lost the tiebreaker to PSU.
  • 2017:  Ohio State won the B1G-E outright and won the B1GCG.
So in seven years of divisional play the Buckeyes have:
  • Four outright Divisional titles resulting in three B1GCG appearances (ineligible in 2012), 2-1 in B1GCG's win two wins over UW and a loss to MSU.
  • Two shared titles resulting in zero B1GCG appearances.
  • One fourth place finish in the old Leaders Division (one game behind third place PU and three games behind co-champions UW and PSU).

As a one-off thing, I completely agree with you, Divisional Co-Championships are pretty meaningless.  However, within a streak I consider them to be meaningful.  I want Ohio State to continue their six year Divisional Championship streak and their streak of having won the B1G-E every year that it has existed.

I think if a fan base, or team, wants to claim a something, fine with me.  UCF claims a MNC last year, fine with me.  UGA likely has some East Division championships where they did not go to the CG, eh.  The only thing that stands out to me is winning your conference.  You have control over that item.

If you get in and win the playoff, great, claim that as well.  I learn they give a trophy to the team that loses the playoff final game also.

When I moved, all my HS trophies went into the trash.  I even had a bowling trophy I was kinda proud of.  What am I going to do, dig them out of the basement to admire them some day?

I zoned out one night at bowling and rolled ten in a row.  I got up for the next frame and the entire 36 lane bowling alley went quiet.

yup, the Huskers have some old Big 8 conference Co-championships with the Sooners and others.  But there was obviously a tie breaker in place, so I do NOT count those.

If the school or someone else wants to count them, fine with me.

on the other hand, I feel it is more than right for Michigan and Nebraska to claim co-national championships, so I guess I'm the one waffling.  The difference obviously. is that no tie breaker exists for those

In a conference that played a full roundrobin (and no CCG obviously), ties and co-champs were common and accepted.  No reason NOT to "claim" those.  Your claim was as good as any other to the conference title, because even if you lost H2H to your co-champ, they lost to someone that your team beat.  If they didn't want to be co-champs, they should have won that game.  Pretty simple logic to me, honestly.
The tie-breakers only determined who went to the bowl games, not who got to claim the (co-)championship.

Georgia claims several SEC Championships that were ties.  Teams played 6 conference games back in the day, so it was indeed fairly common, and you wouldn't have played the other "co-champion".  I think the tied with Kentucky in 1976 or something.

WE're gradually moving to a situation where a lot of teams could claim a thing to where we're down to one.

Felt way to empty to me as a fan to lose the 1st tie breaker that was head to head to the dirty rotten sooners and then try to feel good about a Co-championship, just because the Sooners had dropped a meaningless game earlier in the season.

I understand the sentiment.  But by definition it WASN'T meaningless, because it cost them the outright, sole championship.

Doesn't bother me at all.  It's a legit claim for a conference championship.  If the dirty rotten hated Sooners wanted that Big8 championship bad enough, they shouldn't have lost to Iowa State or whoever.

The other extreme would be "participation trophies" of course, or near that, a 2nd place finish and 3rd place finish in a division.  Yay.

I can see it in say gymnastics.  Finish second at nationals, it's a something.  Finish second in your division?  Meh.

IMHO, there is a difference between second and tied for first:
  • Second means you lost too many games.
  • Tied for first means you did just as well as the best but lost the wrong game.
