Wisconsin had 3 first round picks in 1984.

Darryl Sims, Al Toon, Richard Johnson

Plus 8 more drafted.

They were 7-4-1.

On offense the Horns were a total mess in the 80s.  There were a (very) few elite level defensive players.  These are probably the only guys I'd nominate for an all-decade list.

Kenneth Sims, Defensive Tackle: Lombardi award in 1981, overall #1 NFL draft pick 1982
Jerry Gray, Safety: Two time Consensus All American 1983, 1984
Tony DeGrate, DL: Lombardi winner in 1984, consensus All American 1984

And then maybe Eric Metcalf as a kick return specialist.

To be honest I hardly know anyone from the 80’s. I didn’t watch CFB at all. Nobody in my immediate family did.

I always heard Ray Childress was a beast on the field. He had a productive NFL career. Outside of that I couldn’t tell you much. I heard Kevin Murray ( Kylers dad) was a helluva QB until he broke his leg.

A&M was really good from the mid to late 80’s. Total garbage before that.

Because I don't know the 80s CFB very well, I just have one request for anyone who does:

If there's a Notre Dame player that's a surefire can't miss #1 pick for one of these positions...

...please identify #2 and submit them before the ND player can be added :57:

Tim Brown comes to mind for the Irish. Rocket Ismail for return man (although he goes into the 90s). Todd Lyght at CB, and Chris Zorich (DT) are the others that come to mind, but DT is already filled up.

I'm disappointed that I can't find a nice, short clip of the "phantom clip" that called back the Rocket's return in the waning moments of the Orange Bowl, helping Colorado win half of a national championship. And I'm pretty sure most of you aren't interested in a 4:30 clip from Notre Dame's propaganda department. :-)

ND sucked in the mid-80s, including the infamous 58-7 loss @ Miami (under the HS HC).

A compromise on Barry Sanders could be as the returner.  In '87, he had 2 KR TDs and 2 PR TDs.

But maybe some of you will appreciate this instead:
The Rocket at Michigan

And yes, ND was not good in the mid 1980s, but until the advent of the college football playoff's expanded format, the 1988 MNC season was among the best that any championship team ever had.

Ehhh....Cleveland Gary had a TD.  And Major Harris got hurt on the 3rd play.  But I get what you're saying.
