feel like right now there's a lack of true superstar players in the porthole like there have been most other years. 

No Travis Hunter, Caleb Downs, or Quinshon Judkins level player out there just yet.

Reasons for entering the portal: 
1) Underrecruited, have now proven to be a better player than the recruit rankings showed, giving you bigger opportunities somewhere flashier.
2) Playing well, but stuck on a team/with a coach that the future just doesn't look right for.
3) Not getting the playing time you want (and don't see that changing).
4) Others?

Kinda fits into 1 or 2, right? Are there schools that are paying big NIL dollars to players who don't fit those two molds?

On second thought, though, yes, there's a category for this (although I bet it's smaller than most people think): star-quality player; good enough to get a look from a school with tons of NIL money.

cause the coach has to cut the roster to 105 next season
coach says, "Sorry Kid, we don't have room."  "Hit the Portal, Good luck"

The old rule was 85 scholarships and unlimited walk ons.  Now it's a hard cap at 105, but they can all be on scholarship.  So schools like Nebraska simply can't keep all the walk ons they had
