I keep meaning to ask, what's with the comically large helmets I see on NFL guys?  

I think the first time I noticed it was on the Packer's Romeo Doubs, but I've seen 1 or 2 guys on most teams wearing it.  They look like big-headed aliens.  

It appears to be soft, like some sort of padding, presumably to offer extra protection, I guess?  Never heard any explanation for it.....I just started seeing it.

That's exactly it. It's a padded shell on top of the standard helmet. Supposed to offer more protection from head injuries.

Interesting, but why start at 1970? Superbowl era is longer than that. All-time:

10) Arizona Cardinals
9) Detroit Lions
8) Los Angeles Rams
7) San Francisco 49ers
6) Washington Commanders
5) Philadelphia Eagles
4) Pittsburgh Steelers
3) New York Giants
2) Chicago Bears
1) Green Bay Packers

Taking into account the teams' longevity and instead looking at all-time win percentage:

10) Pittsburgh Steelers
9) San Francisco 49ers
8) Miami Dolphins
7) Minnesota Vikings
6) Kansas City Chiefs
5) Chicago Bears
4) New England Patriots
3) Baltimore Ravens (suspect because this considers their first season 1996, and we all know they were transported and rebranded from the Cleveland Browns, who the NFL ranks at #17 for winning percentage, but their pre-1996 rate was .583, which is higher than any team on this list; including the Cleveland years, they might be #1) 
2) Dallas Cowboys
1) Green Bay Packers (because I highlighted Cleveland and 1996, curiously, among active teams, the Packers were #9 in 1996; the Raiders were #1, followed by the Dolphins, the Cowboys, the Bears, then the Browns)
