2025 NFL Thread

Probably time I admit to myself I have more interest in the NFL than I do cfb.  Which is weird, because I don't have an NFL team I'm invested in or root for.  But I usually have the games on to pass the time.  

I skipped the cfb conf. championships except the Big Ten (which I enjoyed) and some of the Big 12 and I don't really regret it.  

I think the reason is probably because I view the NFL as more honest.  It knows what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else.  cfb died and now some sports-zombie is walking around wearing its skin-suit.  Essentially, I feel like the sport just lies to me the entire time it's on my tv and I'm increasingly inclined to ignore it if for nothing more than stubbornness and obstinance.   

Maybe I'll develop an actual fandom for an NFL team someday, but at the moment I find it more entertaining than ever to watch, just to see individual players I like and to see how it all plays out.  I know the rules before the season starts.  No wondering what some committee will do and if teams will stop scheduling good ooc games and all the arguments about who beat who and who deserves to be in.

I've been trending the same way, and oddly enough am in the same position, without an NFL team I'm invested in or root for. 

For me, it's fantasy football that keeps me invested in the NFL. So I find myself watching quite a bit and following specific players/narratives throughout the season, and then get invested when a specific game gets exciting.

I have a difficult time trying to enjoy NFL football.   it just seems so contrived with the pregame shows in the Talking Heads.  plus they play so many games that every team is walking wounded by the time they get to the playoffs.  I will admit that watching the playoffs is kind of fun though.

sadly I think college football is going more and more that direction which is very regrettable.

The Browns are almost never on TV here.  Unless it's SNF, MNF, or a 3:30 national slot, it's just Texans on CBS and Cowboys on FOX down here, and whoever they play.

We get a good share of Bears here, unless they conflict with Tampa or Miami. Lots of former Chicago people around. The Fackers are also on often.

I'd have expected the Ain'ts to be on TV here when Dallas doesn't have the noon slot on FOX, because we're so close to Louisiana and there are a lot of transplants, and thus Saints fans.  But if not Dallas, we usually get an NFC East game, often the Eagles.  I guess it makes sense that Dallas fans here would be interested in other division games.  Just hadn't expected it and I supposed that local interest would be determined more by geography.  But the Voodoo victims are hardly ever on tv here.

Yeah, Dallas is probably the weird outlier, because most other teams have overlap between division and geography

Tampa Bay looks like any minute Josh Heupel will be out there to politic for a playoff spot and tell the band to play Rocky Top again.

The NFL is a league about skill and parity. Everyone is good, even the trash teams. The level of play is so much higher than in the college game, it often surprises me (because my ration of college to NFL viewing was historically more than 10-1). It's a much different kind of league than the college game. And it will remain that way if the NFL stays at 32 teams, and the college game doesn't disintegrate into two super conferences of about 40 total teams...at which point it will just be NFL light, which...sigh, wouldn't be much fun.
