A Daily Nebraskan photographer received an award of excellence from the 80th College Photographer of the Year competition.

Fisher Madsen received an award of excellence for his sports photography portfolio, putting him among the best collegiate student sports photographers internationally.

Madsen was taking photos at Seacrest Field for the Lincoln Northeast-Bellevue West game when he found out he had won. He checked Instagram during a break in the game and saw he had new followers and was tagged in a post from the College Photographer of the Year, announcing his award.

The College Photographer of the Year competition has 18 categories, including sport news, general news, feature, sports action and sports feature, among others. More than 600 students from 130 colleges and universities around the world enter the competition, which has grown larger each year since its inception in 1945.

As an alum of the DN,  this is great to see.   some of my favorite days were in the basement of the Nebraska Student Union at the DN, either in our old space, or the 'new space' across the hall.    some really impressive talent during my time there (now w/ WSJ, NYT, CNN, Post, the Athletic, OWH, among other pubs and places in the market).   wonder if he's related to a Madsen writer who was at the DN around the same time i was.
