2023 Volleyball Thread

Might as well start this one now.

Last week ESPN/ABC announced that it will now broadcast the NCAA WVB Final Four, with ESPN now carrying the semi-finals on Thursday night (had been on Espn2), and the Finals will now be aired on ABC (2 ish eastern time) on Sunday afternoon.  In the past the Finals had been aired on Saturday night (often Espn2, once awhile by Espn).

FF is in Tampa this December.  Some amount of groaning at this.  On one hand, clearly a win for the exposure of Vball (my position), some concerned it is now running opposite NFL games on Sunday, instead of opposite some bowl games on Saturday night.     The other groaning is the AVCA convention which will now require coaches/attendees to hang around through Sunday as opposed to leaving Sunday.     One wild wrinkle,  should BYU ever make the finals under this new format, they will need to move the Final match to Monday.    that happened recently for a smaller division school for a softball final I think.

Personally I'm delighted to see the Final Four in some place other than Nebraska, Minnesota, or Ohio, for obvious reasons. :)

Austin, Texas is lovely that time of year.  About time we get the advantage of potentially hosting at home.  Dallas or Houston or San Antone would work fine, too.

The Nebraska-driven NIL collective The 1890 Initiative has signed a $5 million partnership over 10 years with the Nebraska Crossing outdoor lifestyle center, which is in Gretna, Nebraska, and JUSTDATA. It’s an unprecedented partnership in the NIL Era, which just turned three years old earlier this month.

Former Husker great Matt Davison partnered with Nebraska businessman Tom Peed and Shawn Peed to form The 1890 Initiative back in October. Davison told On3 the entire volleyball team are already clients of the collective, which was recently named one of On3’s top 20 most ambitious in the country.

“It’s a groundbreaking gift for the sport of volleyball,” Davison told On3. “This will help continue the success of Nebraska volleyball. Rod Yates is a former Husker that played in the 1980s. He owns the Nebraska crossing, and so I’ve had a good friendship with him. He’s the one that really drove this thing. So huge thank you to him. And this is going to set Nebraska volleyball up for years to come. Totally keep keep us near the top.”

It should rotate around the country.  The reality of it is a city has to bid to get it.   It turns out,  the cities bidding to host it often don't have to deal with a professional primary tenant (NBA, NHL) in the arena they want, which precludes some markets, and the AVCA doesn't have endless budget (their convention coincides with the FF).     That said, it's been so midwest heavy lately.    San Antonio last had it in '05 and '11.  Dallas in '03 I think.  Austin a zillion years ago.   Tampa had it this century too.     10 straight years in Midwest if you loosely count Pittsburgh in that string (I probably wouldn't).   Seattle in '13.     The WTF host cities have been Kalamazoo in the 80s and Amherst, MA in '95.

After a tough road loss in the season opener at Long Beach, the Horns bounce back with a road win over the Gophs in Minneapolis.

Stanford's up next on Sunday and then the Buckeyes in a couple of weeks on 9/14.

Did you go Fearless?    pretty well executed.   Chamber of Commerce weather.  not an easy match to produce for tV that's for sure.     felt they could've used more floor cams and end lines (even though I typically hate the end line camera).
