Man, he looked like a bull fighter out there, especially early. A bad bull fighter.

I've never been to a bullfight, but I have read Death In The Afternoon and The Sun Also Rises.

I've taken to watching some games from last season on youtube of late and it confirmed my general idea that a lot of outcomes hinge on some fairly random events.  I watched excerpts of UGA-Tenn last year on SECN and several times the "ball bounced" UGA's way.  With a few breaks the Vols could be been right in there and the crowd would have been noisy throughout.  Going 12-0 means you have a really good team that got some breaks.

Well, we're about to get this thing on the road, once again.  Any pithy thoughts?  Any pissy thoughts?  Any thoughts?

Which is better, grass in good shape or turf?  Is turf better than loose or wet or saggy grass fields?

I've never been on modern field turf type stuff.  Old school astroturf got unbelievably hot.  Like, actual burns and melt your shoes hot.

the vast majority of players today prefer the newer fieldTurf

I don't mind it

I prefer whatever might give my team and edge

the quick hard astro turf of the 70s and 80s with the high crowned field was thought to enhance a team with speed running the triple option

I'd get actual burns from that stuff practicing football in Austin in August.

And marching on that stuff in Austin in August, would literally melt the rubber soles of my band shoes.  They were a lot softer than cleats.

Yeah, that old stuff was brutal. I'd rather play on frozen grass than on that stuff. The new turfs are great (as of 10 years ago when I was on it). I bet they are even better now.

The top ten touchdown-passing teams won 76% of their games in 2021. None won fewer than seven. Touchdown passes are an indicator.

I was on old-school Astroturf in the Metrodome for state tournaments in 1999 and 2001. I wasn't sure if I was walking on Astroturf or the business side of a steel wool pad.

FieldTurf is quite nice. Properly maintained grass is very nice as well, but by mid-October there has been a killing freeze and it is bare dirt by the time playoffs roll around. Because of this, the MSHSL has declared that all playoff games at or after the section final round must be played on turf.
