2022 OT Tourney - The Best Banner-less Teams
« on: June 30, 2022, 12:24:45 PM »
I'll keep this one as the discussion thread.

Teams that didn't win a conference or national title

One bracket for 70s/80s; one for 90s; one for 00s; one for 10s to present

Used a combination of rankings to come up with it.  Obviously the 70s and 80s teams have the advantage of a lot more independent teams, that couldn't win a conference title

Oddly, the 80s dominated the 70s in the metrics I used.  And in retrospect, I should have made the '70s and '80s each their own bracket, because of how much the independen ts factored in

I would have to completely reset the brackets, but I almost wonder if the more interesting conversation is the best 3+ loss teams

my favorite 3 loss team - 1981 Nebraska - my freshman year

upset by Hayden's Rose Bowl hawks 7-10 in Iowa City to start the season
lost to #3 Penn St in Lincoln by 6
Lost to MNC Clemson by 7 in the Orange bowl

beat #19 Florida St 34-14, #19 Mizzou 6-0 in Columbia

undefeated in the Big 8 and therefore a banner

1992 Dawgs lost by 3 to Tenn and 2 to Florida, beat Ohio State by 7, 10-2.

2007 lost badly at Tenn and then to USCe in two really weird games, finished 11-2, hammered Hawaii in bowl game, finished #2 in AP.

That started the rumbling that Richt's teams would lose one game a year to a nobody.
