THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of Sept. 15-21, looking back in five-year intervals

1943: Ex-Husker Harry Hopp scores three TDs in the Detroit Lions' season opener.

1953: In the Huskers’ first nationally televised game, mistake-plagued Nebraska falls to Oregon, 20-17.

1958: Nebraska pulls off a surprise win over Penn State in the season opener and snaps a seven-game losing streak.

1963: The Huskers open Bob Devaney’s second season with 58-7 win over South Dakota State. It is Nebraska’s highest point total since 1927.

1968: Nebraska piles up 518 yards, including more than 300 via passing, as the Huskers dominate Utah, 31-0.

1983: Racking up the most points in a game for NU since 1917, the Huskers’ “Scoring Explosion” offense lives up to its name in an 84-13 laugher over Minnesota. Meanwhile, quarterback Turner Gill wonders whether football or baseball is where his future lies.

1993: True freshman Lawrence Phillips comes off the bench to rush for 137 yards as the Huskers overcome a minus-four turnover margin to beat UCLA in Pasadena, 14-13.

2003: Former NU defensive coordinator Craig Bohl enjoys a good start as head coach at North Dakota State.

2013: The Huskers amass more than 300 yards rushing and 300 yards passing in the same game for the first time in school history in a 59-20 win over South Dakota State. Tommy Armstrong Jr. and Ron Kellogg III filled in at quarterback for the injured Taylor Martinez. The win capped a tumultuous week for Bo Pelini, who apologized after he was heard in an audio recording cursing about Husker fans and reporters after the 2011 win over Ohio State.

2018: The Huskers are off to an 0-2 start for the first time in more than 60 years as Troy pulls off a 24-19 upset in Lincoln.

Henrich Haarberg looked fairly poised.  Not sure yet about his downfield throws.

My Dad reminded me his dad was a walk on FB around 30 years ago.

his downfield throws weren't great, but they didn't go to the fellows wearing the opposing jerseys

Rahmir Johnson, Gabe Ervin and Dwight Bootle out for the season

RB Anthony Grant was supposed to be the starter, but fumbled too much in practice and then fumbled in the 4th quarter vs the gophers.  He's a big senior that is strong, but I doubt he holds up the entire season.

Behind him is Emmett Johnson, a redshirt frosh out of Minneapolis.
Gonna have to grow up quick.

Bootle was 2nd string corner.

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of Sept. 22-28, looking back in five-year intervals:

1933: Lincoln Star sports editor Cy Sherman comes out in favor of banning radio broadcasts of Big Six conference football games, saying ticket revenue is suffering greatly.

1958: The Huskers get outyarded 381-92 in a 28-0 defeat at at Purdue. Also, quarterback Donald Fuell, a central figure in a recruiting scandal at Auburn, arrives in Lincoln to join the Huskers but then heads back home. He eventually would play for Mississippi Southern (now Southern Miss).

1963: A 65-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Claridge to Tony Jeter in the fourth quarter lifts Nebraska to a 14-7 win at Minnesota.

1968: Paul Rogers' 19-yard field goal with 1:32 left wins it as the Huskers score 10 fourth-quarter points off interceptions to beat Minnesota in Minneapolis, 17-14.

After reversing field, Rozier is chased by Bruins during his sideline-to-sideline jaunt for what officially was a 2-yard touchdown.

1983: After trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, the Huskers score six unanswered touchdowns, including an electrifying two-yarder by Mike Rozier, to down UCLA, 42-10. The win helps make Nebraska a unanimous No. 1 pick in the AP poll.

1988: Ken Clark, Steve Taylor and Terry Rodgers rush for more than 100 yards apiece – a Husker first – as Nebraska downs Arizona State in Lincoln, 47-16.

1998: Nebraska steamrolls No. 9 Washington, 55-7, as DeAngelo Evans rushes for 146 yards on just 13 carries in his first game action since December 1996.

Plans for a $450 million renovation* of Memorial Stadium have been unveiled and will go before the board of regents next week.

The plans are for a $450 million renovation that will:

South Stadium demolition and replacement with chair-back general seating.
New chair-back seating in West and East stadiums.
360-degree main-level concourse connection and 270-degree upper-level concourse connection.
Concession upgrades, refurbished menu options and added points of sale throughout the stadium.
Restroom modernization throughout the stadium.
Academic curriculum space, with specific uses guided by UNL’s academic leadership.
Enhanced student life amenities.
ADA upgrades throughout the stadium.

“One hundred years ago, Nebraskans came together to celebrate the first game at Memorial Stadium – the start of what would become a century’s worth of memories for students, alumni, fans and families all across our state,” Alberts said. “Now our fans have an opportunity to come together again to ensure that we can make memories for another century. After 100 years, the reality is our stadium needs significant modernization.

Funding is to be paid equally from private funds ($225 million) and other funding sources, including up to $50 million from the university’s internal lending program. No student tuition dollars or university general operating dollars will be used.

The target completion for the entire project is July 2026.

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of Oct. 6-12, looking back in five-year intervals

1898: “Superior generalship” helps Nebraska overcome a stout Iowa State line in a 23-10 home win.

1903: Nebraska is said to enjoy a yardage advantage of 385 to 15 in a 10-0 win at Denver.

«1913: After rebuffing Kansas State’s protest of Clinton Ross’s presence on the team, Nebraska hands the Aggies a 24-6 defeat in Lincoln.

1923: Legend-to-be Red Grange scores three TDs in his first college game as Illinois downs the visiting Cornhuskers, 24-7. In Lincoln, fans gathered in the Armory to “watch” the game on a Grid-graph.

1928: The Huskers open their first season of Big Six play with a hard-fought 12-0 victory at Iowa State.

1933: In the first meeting between the schools, Nebraska blanks Texas, 26-0, in the season opener in Lincoln. The Huskers outgained the Longhorns 320 yards to 85, and coach Dana Bible cleared the bench. George Sauer scored twice and intercepted a Texas pass. Late in the third quarter, sophomore Gerald LaNoue scored on a 13-yard run, his first carry as a Cornhusker. | Play by play

1938: A safety on a blocked punt proves crucial as Iowa State gets its first win over NU since 1919 in an 8-7 decision in Lincoln. A 30-yard TD pass from Harry Hopp to Ray Prochaska pulled Nebraska within one point early in the fourth quarter, but an interception and a blocked field goal thwarted subsequent Husker chances.

1943: Nebraska surrenders six touchdown passes to Bob Hoernschemeyer in a 54-13 loss to Indiana before just 8,000 fans in Memorial Stadium. Hoernschemeyer completed 14 of 19 passes for 345 yards as the Hoosiers outyarded NU by 585-203, the Sunday Journal and Star reported. It was the second week in a row the Huskers yielded exactly 54 points, and they would do it a third time before the month was out.

1948: Conference newcomer Colorado upsets the Huskers in Boulder, 19-6. Nebraska was "outclassed ... in every department, including fight and spirit," the Sunday Journal and Star's Norris Anderson wrote. Nebraska's only score came on a one-yard drive following a blocked punt by Charley Toogood.

1953: Fumbles damage Nebraska’s chances in a 14-6 loss at Pittsburgh. Favored by two touchdowns, Pitt scored on a one-yard run as time expired to increase its winning margin from one point to eight.

Dennis Claridge loses the ball after a gain, and Air Force’s Ken Jaggers dives for the recovery.

1963: Air Force upsets the Huskers in Lincoln, 17-13, the only blemish on Nebraska’s 1963 record.

1968: Bobby Douglass drives No. 6 Kansas to a go-ahead score with less than 5 minutes remaining as Nebraska falls to the Jayhawks in Lincoln, 23-13.

1973: Frosty Anderson’s three TD receptions, including a 67-yarder, pace Nebraska to a 48-7 win at Minnesota.

1978: After losing to Iowa State in the previous two seasons, NU holds the Cyclones to 82 total yards in a 23-0 victory in Ames.

1983: With the “Scoring Explosion” fizzling for an afternoon, the Huskers receive their first scare of the season but hang on for a 14-10 win at Oklahoma State.
