#15 Michigan State (1-1) at Arizona State (1-1) Post Game
« on: September 04, 2018, 10:53:45 AM »
I've been nervous since this one was announced.  I'm all for playing P5 OOC games, but these September road trips to the Pac 10/12 seem to kill the Big Ten.

My hope was that Herm would buffoon this team up enough, but they looked really good in their opener.  Yeah, it's UTSA, but UTSA was probably better than half the opponents than P5 teams played last week.

If Chewins is still out, they better hope the guys around him look a lot better than they did in Week 1.  Also time for Justin Layne to really show up.  I'd feel a lot better with Scott out there.  N'Keal Harry just looks like an NFL player out there, and I'm not sure Layne is up to it.

I was looking forward to this game, then saw the 10:45 pm kick time, so take lots of notes that I can read in Sunday morning.

Chewins still listed as OR on the depth chart at LT.  That's how he was listed last week, and people wondered if it was demotion related because there had been no injury news, but it's turned out to be due to injury.  Hopefully continued no news and still listing him as an OR there means it's still possibly not long term.  MSU generally isn't coy with injury news, so it's not like there is gamesmanship there.

Being in Nashville this weekend buys me an extra hour there.  Makes it doable.

The Sun Devils are a little bit better than the Blue Aggies.

That would help, though staying reasonably sober all day in Nashville is a challenge unto itself

The teams will also honor Daryl Rogers before the game.  Rogers coached at MSU from 1976-79, winning the 1978 Big Ten Championship, before following his AD to ASU, where he coached from 1980-84.  His 1982 team which beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, finished #6 in the AP Poll, the second highest finish in school history at the time, and only bested twice since (#4 in 1986 and 1996).  That '86 Rose Bowl championship team that got Cooper the OSU job had Rogers' fingerprints all over it.  He died over the summer.

The PAC is at a definite advantage when doing home-and-homes; both teams may experience jet lag, but night games east of the Missouri river are basically late-afternoon games for those on the West Coast.  Night games out West can last well past midnight in the Central and Eastern time zones.

Sparty is about a 7-point favorite, but that seems a bit much.  IMHO it should be closer to a pick-em.

Why the Big Ten doesn't insist on doing the return trips at noon is beyond me.

I like the time zone being a factor, so long as it works both ways.

If they schedule you at night, you schedule them at Noon on the return trip.

Keep in mind the game isn't at 1045 to punish the road team do you really want to play in the hot sun of Tempe in early Sept?  Neither does ASU.

I do recall UGA getting a 7ish pm est kick at ASU about 10 years ago.

N had UCLA play at 11 am a few yrs ago,   Ucla won after sleeping in the first half
