Page load issues
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:17:52 AM »
Just a heads up...

I've been getting some slow response times and half-loaded pages the past few days. Usually happens w/2nd or 3rd click after loading the site, not on initial load, which I thought was weird. Happening on Chrome browser on both PC and android mobile.

We've been enduring a Chinese mini ddos attack for over a week.  I don't know what to do about it honestly except hover over the server ready to pick it up when it crashes. This seems to be the coarse of action several sites are taking who are getting the same thing.

To be more specific, the chinese robots are indexing everything.  They arent like google or msn, Yahoo or any reputable engines, they go full blast until they're done.  They disregard robots.txt as if it isnt there (after indexing it, of course), and if site crashes because of their activity theyll be sitting there waiting when it comes back online.

I COULD block them by IP range in htaccess or user.ini, but doing so I would block a user we have in Hong Kong, and I dont want to do that.  I will if I HAVE TO, but I'd rather avoid it, hope the chinese finish their activity, amd move on.

the chinese are either sleeping, giving us a break, or have moved on.  this morning things seem to be humming along as designed.

the problem arises when more than 30 requests happen at the same time... that is a massive number of requests- and something sites like Google, Yahoo, Facebook, ect may encounter regularly.. it isn't something a page like ESPN sees regularly, as an example.  We did a decent job of enduring it- the server never crashed.  it came close.

to give you and idea, the type of requests we were seeing is about the same as having 200k posters on the site at the same time and 10% of them hitting 'post' at the precise same moment.

in the quiet of Christmas eve i got into the server configs and learned something...

and update i ran (automatically) erased the configuration of workers and it defaulted to the... well, default settings.  those were for a server a lot 'lessor' than this one, and.... the bottlenecks abound.

there was no errors logged, the server thought it was dong what it was supposed to do.  but what happened is when you click on something and somebody else is doing something, you had to wait until they were finished.  if it was just members, this wouldn't have been a problem, but... all these Chinese indexers pointed the issue out... so... it was kinda their fault, and kinda cPanels fault.

either way, i'm on it and trying to find that balance once again.  things will be back to normal pretty quick... they're already some better.

Who are you ;)
President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”
