Our cruise ship was stuck in NYC an extra day due to weather and I found ESPN channels on their TV, and it was Saturday, so I got to see the UGA-Vandy game.

We could leave the ship but the weather was pretty gnarley.

Port A this time.  We stayed in an RV park with full hookups, the family appreciated that.

I've noted my wife's antipathy to anything "RV", which traces back to the RV "culture" in France of course, which is ... quite different.  She has also noted that if we had one she'd be making beds and cooking and cleaning just as she does at home, so where's the vacation?  (She'd agree I help.)

I mentioned to her that we make us of our time share in places like Hawaii and Hilton Head and Colorado etc. where she also makes beds, cooks, cleans ...

(They do have midweek main service.)

The time share option works for us with our larger extended family, but I think for MOST folks it's a very poor "investment".  Maybe if you like one place and buy on the resale market it could work for you.  The advantage we have is access to condos around the world, maybe 100 of them in interesting locations, at no cost, though some are always full basically.

That's why my mother was totally pissed off when my father bought a 5th wheel camper.  She wasn't much for vacations anyway, but one where she had to cook and clean was a non-started for her.

And I'm curious as to the "no-cost" aspect of a time share.  We bought an every-other-year week in Maui at the Marriott, which they promised we could deposit into Interval International and receive a bonus week for the first 10 years.  Which did happen, but by the time we decided to sell, the maintenance fee and II fees (due Jan. 10, right after the expense of Christmas came due) was pushing $1500 a year, and we were not getting the bonus week regularly.  So, $3000 for a week very 2 years was the cost.

For a $13.5K investment, we sold for 3K, and paid $600 of that to Red Week for their fee selling.

It DID force us to take a week off with the fam for all those years, I guess that was the value!

My "no cost" comment refers solely to the exchange process, we can exchange a week at our home base for a week somewhere else (this is in the Hilton chain, so the options are pretty large).  The major downside of course is maintenance fees, and upfront costs.  Overall, I'd likely be better off on my own with VRBO or whatever, but at the time, such things didn't exist, it was either a hotel or ... not much else.  I was looking at two rooms for my family as they got older.

Our "home week" is in Hawaii, but that is largely irrelevant.  I've used the weeks in California, Colorado, Italy (someday I hope), Portugal (this slot if usually booked), france, Florida of course ...

I even booked in DC once with my daughter.  If I want an exchange with RCI I get fees, but I rarely do that.  RCI properties often are not quite as nice.

RVs definitely aren't for everyone.  And we take traditional hotel vacations regularly as well.

RV is not gonna be in the budget for a long while yet, but I'm not sure how Mrs. DeT would feel about that anyway.  She despises hotels, and I don't think she'd love the idea of staying in an RV either.  She's an airbnb gal, and that's about all she will hear of.

Yeah airbnbs can be a good deal, especially for us as a family of 4.  We've stayed in a couple over the years, sometimes worked out better than renting multiple hotel rooms or suites once the kids got older.

OTOH, when I was a kid, we took a lot of family vacations in my grandparent's RV, and us kids had a blast.  If it wasn't as much fun for the adults, they hid it well.

In retrospect, the two RVs my grandpa had were not even close to the bigass luxury things you can buy today.  But we sure didn't care.

SOB.  I must have been distracted with work, with all those typos.

I'm not so sure on the AirBnB stuff after my middle daughter's experiences lately.

She procured a place in Cape Coral for a week, it was a decent enough place, but was a residence on one of the canals.  Would have been cool had we had a boat to anchor in the back yard, for sure.

But she's been trying to experience new cities to see if she can find a place she wants to land.  First place in Denver somebody had been in and left a deuce in the toilet. The 2nd one some homeless cretin threw crap at her as she was going in.  Went South to Colorado Springs and dealt with an invasion of mice.  Had a place in Austin where the bus stop she drove by was the local drug store.  Now she's in KC with the front door facing a 6 lane crazy-busy street.  These places aren't resort style or anything, but most were nothing like they were advertised, and the cheapest one has been $2200/month for a longer term stay.  She's trying to find one in Miami for Jan-Feb to firm up her residency there again (to stop paying Missouri/City of KC income taxes) but is looking at in excess of 4K/mo for anything, that may well turn out to be a rat hole again.
