Question
« on: September 09, 2025, 04:20:49 PM »
I just heard that Florida fired Dan Mullen when his record at 40 games was 31-9.  The same exact record of Urban Meyer at 40 games.  That’s insane.  Of course ole Billy’s record at 40 games is now 20-20.  Even ole shark jumper (can’t recall his name) was fired with a 22-12 record.  Yes he couldn’t even make it to 40 games.

Can anyone confirm this?  Why so forgiving on Billy when Dan had a hell of a record through 40 games?

Mullen did have a 31-9 record after 40 games, but he was fired the next year, before the end of the season, with an overall record of 36-15.

Napier also likely has a much higher buyout clause, though that one is dropping as time passes of course.  I don't think it's much of a factor today.

Napier was on the ropes last season and ended it with some solid unexpected wins, so they retained him.

there is also an element of availability in play, too.  if a school has a big fish on the line they'll bag even a modestly decent coach - if there is no decent coaches available, they'll stick with the bad one while quietly hunting.

that last part is a lesson UT learned... a few times.  they went from bad to worse to worse to worse still.... and sandwiched in there was one that was bad, too, everyone forgets about- Rodriguez... interim or not.  they'd made such a mess of it no good coaches would bite.  it took a Danny White AD hire and him bringing his HC with him, which at the time i figured was a bad plan, to get a decent coach... and he's more than decent.

Foley was the premier AD, by my reckoning, in all the land.  when UF lost him, they became mortal and lost their bite not long following.  White seems to have taken over that role, since.  Hopefully UT won't be shopping for a HC anytime soon, but if they do?  I have a feeling White will handle it differently than the solely focused profit and margin AD's prior to him by applying some long range goals instead of quick payouts...

..... and to make a prediction- I wager IF already has their horse... they're just smart enough to keep it wrapped, unlike the shit show others have put on and none better than UT.  it'll be interesting watching how bama handles their replacement... i haven't heard dabo mentioned once in those circles, when he was the heir apparent not two years ago... how fickle that field is....
