I wonder how much, if any, money did the LHN lose ESPN over it's run?  I heard it was a big money loser, but I was never sure if that was hype or not.  I think the LHN was conceived at a different time when cable ruled and streaming was in it's infancy.

The LHN also mostly coincided with a prolonged down period in UT football.  I have to wonder if the 10+ win seasons had continued, which Texas enjoyed for a long time up until the end of the Colt McCoy era, if the LHN would've been more profitable.

I agree, but how many games would have even made it on the LHN every year even in 10 win seasons?  All the top games would have been on ABC/ESPN/FOX, or whatever network was available.  It almost seems that if LH had been good/better, there would be more demand for those games, and more reason NOT to put them on LHN.  LHN seems now like it was more like ESPN+ or SEC+ is.  Only the least important games get shown on those networks.

Right, but I think that potentially supports my point.  If Texas were good and fans had reasonable expectations to "be in the hunt" then they wouldn't want to miss even a scrub game.  And a scrub game was always going on the LHN.  iirc, every team had one Tier 3 game in those days.....I know we certainly did.  Prior to the SECN, the crappiest game of our season was on a pay-per-view type thing called TigerVision.  On years we were good, LSU fans paid the (?)$ for that game.  If the team sucked, many of them wouldn't waste their money.  So if that translates to the Texas fanbase, if Texas hadn't sucked out loud for several years, more of its fans would've been willing to up their DirecTV package to the one that includes LHN.  Which includes not only an extra football game to watch, but also a bunch of programming where pundits talk a bunch about how great your favorite team is, which is something else fans of top teams would sign up for.....I think.

To utee's point elsewhere, that space is altered now and the Tier 3 stuff has probably passed its prime, even if no one knows it yet.  The blathering on and on about our favorite teams is not a LHN or a SECN thing anymore.  That's what YouTube and Spotify is for.

I don't know exactly how the financials worked though, so you may be right that LHN would've been a net loss no matter what.  But as with team merchandise, ticket sales, you name it.....everything sells more when the team is winning.

LHN was never supposed to be profitable for Disney.  It was a placeholder designed to keep Texas in the B12, while Disney figured out how the next phase of realignment was going to allocate the last few remaining valuable brands to the various conferences and their related network deals.

And it worked exactly as intended-- even better really, since ultimately Disney/SEC scooped up both Texas and OU.  Sacrificing $20M/year was pretty small-time compared to the billions that the latest SEC and B1G contracts are worth.

The bonus for Disney is that it served as an experimental pilot space to test run a lot of things that later ended up on SEC Network or even the ESPNs/ABC.  Including training and then moving up several young sideline reporters like Samantha Steele (Ponder) and Kaylee Hartung.

10/26 looks like a guaranteed loss.

Poor Horns.  Ran away from K-State only to get caught by Vanderbully.

Frying pan, fire, etc.

I told you, Vandy's coming for that Longhorn steak.  Elephant was the appetizer.

If Texas doesn't somehow turn this into two losses, they'll be fine.
