Drudge headline:

TRUMP 52% APPROVAL JOLTS WASHINGTON
BEST IN YEARS

Amazing what happens to public opinion when they get to hear Trump directly rather than being filtered through the MSM.
No wonder Pelosi didn't want him to have a SOTU speech.

Unfortunately, it also tells you how much sway the MSM still has....

And it is not just the "news."

https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/culture/gabriel-hays/2019/02/11/video-venom-33-tv-shows-jan-slam-terrorist-trump-praise

Video Venom: 33 TV Shows in Jan. Slam ‘Terrorist’ Trump, Praise Abortion

SNIP:
A cross section of nightly programming on major networks, cable TV or popular streaming services is loaded with anti-conservative, anti-Trump propaganda. January features at least 33 separate entertainment programs that attack conservative values and/or President Donald Trump while promoting a hardcore progressive agenda.

This aggressive lefty programming calls President Donald Trump a “racist,” and a “terrorist” who is holding America “hostage,” ridicules Second Lady Karen Pence and her husband’s “BDSM late night kink sessions,” insinuates that Democracy has “died” in America, joked that the president watches Judge Jeanine Pirro’s show with his “pants off,” and trashed proponents of border enforcement.

Why Do People Hate Trump? Here Are The 20 Top Reasons
Why do people hate Donald Trump? After reviewing tons of online comments, we found that these are the Top 20 Reasons that Donald’s Trump critics say they hate him. Surprisingly, they’re also the same exact reasons that other people love him!
So why do people hate Trump so much?
1. He says he wants to “Make America Great Again.”
Yes, this is what he says. But what that means is that he wants to return to an America that was racist, sexist, homophobic, and xenophobic. It means he wants to return to a time when white men ruled the country and received a leg up on others by stepping on their necks. In other words, he wants to move backwards and erase all of the progress America has made since the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s. The sad truth is that America was never great, but we were moving away from that. Trump wants to reverse progress.
2. He’s a former reality-TV star.
What’s next—Kim Kardashian cures cancer? Whoever wins The Bachelor gets appointed head of the World Bank? What sort of sad comment is it on this country that a reality-show star with ridiculous hair and an ego the size of the Empire State Building, a man who’s best known for firing people and losing money on casinos, is now the world’s most powerful man? He is nothing but a cheap act of bluster and attitude, and frankly it’s terrifying that this is a man whose ego could lead us into nuclear war.
3. He’s a billionaire.
He was born rich and just became richer by swindling people and stiffing workers. What’s most tragic is that a lot of working-class people, who have every right to be outraged by how our government has sold out their interests, have invested hope in a man who has never been poor, can’t relate to them on any level about anything, and who probably considers them all losers and suckers. They think he’s “working class” just because he has a foul mouth. Don the Con has fooled these people into voting against their best interests. At a time when wealthy inequality is reaching record heights, they elected a man who’s only going to make the gap between rich and poor wider.
4. He’s a businessman and not a politician.
What the hell does he know about politics or how government works? Can he even name his local Congressman? Does he know the difference between the House and Senate? He never served in any kind of political office, and then you make him PRESIDENT? He seems so dumb and crass and uninformed, he’s the type of guy who’d want to rename the Supreme Court as the Totally Awesome Court. No wonder all Democrats and a healthy slice of the Republican Party can’t stand him. He knows nothing about how government works, nor does he seem to care that a huge purpose of government is to protect your average worker and consumer against predatory businessmen such as him.
5. He hates the media.
Of course he does. He hates them the same way that a criminal hates the cops. The same way a wife hates a cheating husband. They catch him on every lie that comes out of his mouth, and that’s an exhausting job, because all he does is lie. If they seem “relentlessly negative” against him, it’s because he’s the most relentlessly negative egomaniac ever to hold this office. The media’s job is to keep politicians honest, and boy, do they have a job with this lunatic! He keeps them all working overtime.
6. He’s rude and mean.
At a time when our country is being ripped apart by hatred and division, when people can’t even talk to one another anymore because of political differences and we definitely need an kind an compassionate person who brings us all together with grace and wisdom, we get the equivalent of a teenager who farts loudly in class and thinks it’s funny. He makes jokes about the disabled and the underprivileged and the oppressed and basically anyone who’s had a harder life than he has.
7. He’s not “politically correct.”
He thinks he’s just “telling it like it is.” Sure, if you think that white males are superior and should keep ruling the world. Instead, he’s just a hateful asshole who likes to slam Muslims, Mexicans, women, gays, blacks, transgender people, poor people, and anyone who’s not a fat orange ball of hate with no innate intelligence or talent who’d be mopping floors if it wasn’t for daddy’s money.
8. He says he’s not a racist.
Which is, of course, why he calls Mexicans rapists and says “the blacks” love him. He even had the gall to claim he’s the least racist person you’ll ever meet. Well, the proof is in the pudding—Hispanics overwhelmingly voted against him, and he only got 8 percent of the black vote. Don, you can pretend you love “the blacks” all you want, but what’s crystal clear is that the love is not reciprocated.
9. He says disrespectful things about women.
This is the man who called Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman,” who rates women on a scale from one to 10, who said Megyn Kelly was acting crazy because blood was coming out of her “wherever,” and who is constantly calling women “fat” and “ugly” and “pigs.” This is also the man who gave Rape Culture a big boost by saying that when you’re rich and famous, you can just grab women by the pussy and get away with it. It’s a huge shame, and a sign of al the progress we still need to make, that over 40% of women still voted for him. What’s even worse is that a majority of white women voted for him.
10. He’s against open borders.
Most of world history is a tale of war and bloodshed and cruelty and suffering due to the fact that people have an “us against them” mentality and divide themselves into group, when the truth is that we’re all human and when you cut us, we all bleed red. At a time when we’re making unprecedented technological progress that brings us all together as one world, Donald Trump wants to build walls rather than bridges. We are a nation of immmigrants—Trump is himself the descendant of German and Scottish immigrants—but Trump wants to revers the tide of history and keep us isolated, hateful, and paranoid.
11. He’s nationalist rather than globalist.
World War II was a fight between nationalism and globalism. Did you know that the “N” in “Nazi” comes from the fact that Hitler’s party called themselves “National” Socialists? So if you’re on the side of nationalism v. globalism, you’re taking the side of Nazis and the losers in the last tragic World War.
12. He didn’t sign the Paris Climate Accord.
While the earth is warming and the seas are rising and nearly every climate scientist on Earth insists all nations have to come together to solve a problem that threatens to render the human race extinct, Trump ignored all the experts and voted to choose death and cancer and pollution.
13. He appeals to rural voters.
You know the ones—the ignorant, toothless, inbred, Bible-thumping, cousin-touching, uneducated rubes who have always been the most racist, intolerant, ignorant, and hateful members of our country. Cities are synonymous with art and culture and sophistication, so it’s no surprise that the part of the country that produces no art, no literature, and no culture would be the one that supports Trump.
14. He does not think Russia is a threat.
Every intelligence agency has declared that Russia meddled in the last election and likely handed Trump the presidency on a silver platter, but Trump steadfastly denies it. All the evidence suggests the Putin represses dissent, steals elections, persecutes gays, and murders journalists, but Trump says none of this is a threat. He must be especially fond of the “murders journalists” part, because he knows that the media is on to him.
15. He is pro-capitalism.
He favors an economic system that strengthens the weak against the poor, that ravages the land, and that blithely stomps on indigenous cultures in order to render us all mindless consumers with no sense of self, virtue, or community. The world is on the brink of an economic collapse, and Trump wants to keep pumping life into a dying system that threatens all life on this planet as we know it.
16. He is pro-gun.
Even after all the senseless and high-profile mass shootings of the past few years in which countless innocent people were caught in the crossfire of some crazed lunatic loser who was working out his inadequacy and hatred on the world, Trump insists that we all need guns—the more, the merrier. He will tell you that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. That’s true, but people with guns kill a LOT of people—nearly 40,000 last year alone. Forty thousand beautiful lives cut down because to many men, a gun is a second penis.
17. He’s constantly battling with critics.
How thin-skinned is this raging tangerine? He’s the leader of the free world and would presumably have more important things to worry about, but if you dare say something about his hair or skin tone or his endless idiotic comments, he’ll launch into a full-blown, all-night Twitter war with you. Secure men don’t do that.
18. He gives the Republicans full control of Washington again.
This means that the gun-toting, Bible-thumping, woman-hating, anti-gay, anti-minority, anti-government, pro-war loons have full control of not only the presidency, but also the House and Senate, allowing them to gleefully and sadistically erase all the progress of the past few generations.
19. He cuts government services.
If you’re looking for work and need food stamps so you don’t starve to death before you find a job, or if you’re a single mother with a deadbeat husband and two babies to feed, or if you’re a mentally ill person in desperate need of care or you very might well harm yourself or others, don’t look to President Trump. He doesn’t care.
20. He obviously thinks quite highly of himself.
We don’t need an egomaniac with his finger on the nuclear button. We don’t need someone who might likely destroy civilization as we know it because someone hurt his feelings. We need someone who can put down the mirror and focus on the problems that threaten us all.

In San Diego I had a number of Mexican friends that said California was occupied territory....The first time I heard it was from a girl that had won a Ms. Mexican_American (Chicano) contest... I thought she was kidding....She was a breath taking Mexican girl, I mean she was beyond FINE...
She took me to a party, which was mostly Mexican people....The central themes was "Gringo, go home"....Since I had just moved back to California from Tennessee, they mostly gave me a pass.
The only hassle I got was about Davy Crockett being a revolutionary soldier of fortune...I knew I had to get out of there ASAP...
As a group these people did not like "Gringos", and they were not shy about letting me know it.....They were consuming a lot of alcohol, and the more they drank, the meaner they got..They mostly spoke in Spanish, but they did not know I had taken Spanish all through high school...

I did not react to some of the vile things they were saying, in Spanish...I just looked straight ahead when they said very ugly things about me, and all Gringos...I knew, but they did not know I knew...

When I got to my car, I found it had been keyed...It was a new corvette, right off the show room floor.
I don't know how many of the people that were there then were illegals, but revolution was in the air, and I wanted no part of it....
Yes, I still dated the Mexican cutie, but I did not go with her to any more parties.

i wonder how many of the 48%, presumably 'non-supporters', are in 'enemy territory' and are practicing taqiyya?  I wager more than a few... I wager outside those with something specific to gain from democrat practices and who aren't the 'ruling elite' or the MSM are supporters.  I bet support is north of 75%.

Folks like to trumpet the polls they like, and discount the rest, but the truth may lie in the middle.

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/president_trump_job_approval-6179.html

RCP is useful because it shows all polls taken on a topic over time, so one poll may appear to be an outlier.

This one shows state by state, but the numbers by state would obviously be lower than national (in terms of people surveyed):

Generally speaking, people will discount poll numbers they don't like and hype those they do for obvious reasons.  Reality may be something different.

I've had several calls that I feel were polling calls....How the question is asked has a lot to do with the answer given.

"Do you think President Trump is doing a good job?"

"Do you think President Trump could do a better job?

One "yes" is favorable, the other "yes" is negative.

It's all in the question....I just hang up on em.

This will climb.  The Left is causing this.  Anti-Americanism is not going to fly.  AOC, raghead racists, infanticide... none of this stuff is playing well.

In terms of public sentiment, the next shutdown might just be attributed to Democrats if it happens.  And the MSM is furiously helpless.

Trump has settled down just a tad - but the Left continues to radically derail.  It's making Trump look better and better.

And despite his gift for bluster and blunder, he's a pretty damn good President.  So there's that.

polls are little distractions from emptiness of news reporting- something for these clowns to cling to like a finger hold on a sheer rock face... and more times than not they get far more mileage out of them than they should.
i seriously doubt anyone here takes any of them serious- nor do most people here extrapolate anything from them other than that momentary distraction.
when 'polls' demonstrate to the world the futility of a campaign for weeks and weeks leading into an election, and that election results in figures nowhere even close to what polls suggested, those polls and the organizations running them become suspect and any 'faith' is destroyed... and folks around here giggle.
some time back- during B-II's tenure if i'm not mistaken, there was a 'whistle blower' who did just that concerning some major polling organization- I can't recall which - but he went into great detail with examples of how data was manipulated to obtain the results the 'customer' wanted- altering metrics in effort to control outcomes was apparently a standard practice... the trouble this guy encountered is when no matter how the data was manipulated the intended result couldn't be reached- so the group outright lied to gain that result.
i appreciate your optimism that people are honest.  i don't share that sentiment.  i'm thinking some people truly attempt to be honest while others- especially on the left- could care less about truth and are willing to sacrifice it for outcome.

Election results generally DO come rather close to what the polls predict.  The last Presidential is a good example where the popular vote was close to what the polls suggested, and that's all the national polls indicate, overall popular vote.  Where they failed was in state polling in those key states where little polling was done right before the election.

https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/campaign/315145-one-last-look-2016-polls-actually-got-a-lot-right

Anyway, had this Rasmussen poll not been favorable to Trump, it would never have been cited here as a "thing", just as other polls in the same time period showing 40ish% support were ignored.

The funny thing is you can always add 3-4 percentage points to any poll Trump related.

One can also subtract 3 or 4 points if it makes one feel better.

The relevance of a poll at this point is that it may indicate how much influence a President might have over some in Congress, for better or worse.

The major key to getting any poll survey to go the way you want it, is to get the person answering "Yes" to several questions that have very little to do with the survey...

First they ask you to confirm your name.....(Yes, that's me)

Would you be willing to answer a few questions?  (Yes)

Did you vote in the last presidential election? (Yes)  if No, are you going to vote in he next election? Most good Americans will say "yes" here.

After 3 yes answers, the person is subconsciously predisposed to say yes...From here you can lead them to any type of question where a "yes answer" is needed.

It's selling 101.

I had some indirect experience, mostly observing, when I was still working at how polls were done (not political) and they were quite clever I thought in how they attempted to avoid bias and predisposed responses.  One thing I learned was that they would add a "fake question" or 3 to the poll, if it was written, to see if the person was paying attention at all.

Given that national polls end up being pretty close to election results, I tend to think they are reasonably accurate.

The 40ish% polls were unremarkable in that the results were indistinguishable from those taken during Obama's time in office.
What is remarkable about this poll is the results come after Trump's SOTU address - after, as HK pointed out, the American people got to hear what Trump said, unfiltered by the biased media.  Given Trump's results as president, which are quite good, it makes one wonder what Trump's polling would look like if the MSM didn't view themselves as part of 'the resistance', obligated to tear him down at every opportunity?  And while we're at it, what would Obama's numbers have looked like without also being filtered by a media that was head-over-heels in love with him?
Polls of every kind reflect the opinions of the people surveyed, and a rational person cannot deny the effect that the media has on those opinions.  When the MSM get a boner every time they see politician A, but growl whenever they see politician B, they are going to influence popular opinion to the favor of A and the detriment of B.   That's why Trump calls the media the enemy of the American people, an opinion I happen to share.

I'll wait and see if this is a trend and is mirrored by other polls who use a somewhat different methodology.

About 47 million watched his speech (more read about it of course).  Many of them were already Trump supporters.  Whether it had any impact on his popularity remains to be seen in my view.

Well, the last 5 polls before the SOTU have Trump down by -15.
The 2 polls conducted afterwards have Trump down by -2.

Not a lot of data yet, but with the data we have, it was a big jump.

But the MSM will not stop in their droning on about "Orange Man Bad."

Get ready to watch liberals have another major meltdown in 2020.

The president takes El Paso

President Trump visited the Texas border city of El Paso to make a case for his border wall, and press pooh-poohing to the contrary, it was big.  Real big.  The press fell over itself to downplay claims about the actual crowd size, but 16,000 people, if the numbers were as low as that, is still an amazing number, respect-inducing numbers, particularly in a blue city like El Paso.  If this trip was Trump's kickoff to his 2020 presidential re-election run, the Democratic clown car of candidates getting all the press these days has something to worry about, because it looks a lot like 2016, except it's even bigger.

Here's the USA Today report:

The Trump rally, held in strongly Democratic El Paso, came a week after the president's State of the Union address, where he angered many locals by saying El Paso was "once considered one of our nation's most dangerous cities" until a security fence was erected.  Trump has asked for $5.7 billion to build a border wall, a key sticking point in a recent government shutdown that dragged for 35 days.

Monday's rally, Trump's first political event of 2019, is likely a harbinger of more to come to garner support for the wall and his reelection campaign.

This is really what it comes down to.  The press had been trying to downplay this event even before it happened and has put out a slew of stories to suggest that everyone in El Paso is against him.

Apparently, quite a few of them are not.  Yes, it's likely that many have come from outside of El Paso, given that the core of the city is pretty blue, but those people count, too, many of them ranchers whose properties have been despoiled by illegal immigration, the human-smuggling trade, and cartels transporting illegal drugs . If they had the motivation to drive a hundred miles to come to such a rally, as the USA Today report suggested, what does this say about their voting commitment?  In the past, they've been known as "broken glass Republicans," and apparently, they're back.

It goes to show that Trump's signature issue, the building of a border wall, is powerful with voters and likely to win him re-election in 2020.  Nobody expected crowds to be this big, at least in the press, and the fact that a potential Trump rival in 2020, failed Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke, held a rival rally right in the heart of the blue city of El Paso, with far smaller numbers, around 7,000, says a lot.  It was reported that cheers from the Trump rally a quarter mile away actually drowned Beto out.
