How Bad is Arkansas?
« on: November 23, 2018, 06:26:57 PM »
Let's look back at the divisional era for the SEC and list all of the 0-8 teams first.
1994 Kentucky
1996 Vanderbilt
1997 Vanderbilt
1998 South Carolina
1999 South Carolina
2000 Kentucky
2001 Vanderbilt
2002 Vanderbilt
2002 Miss State
2007 Ole Miss
2009 Vanderbilt
2010 Ole Miss
2012 Kentucky
2012 Auburn
2013 Kentucky
2013 Arkansas
2014 Vanderbilt
2017 Tennessee
2018 Arkansas

So let's see who's been guilty the most often:
6  Vanderbilt
4  Kentucky
2  South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss
1  Auburn, Tennessee, Miss State

What's interesting - I think there's some correlation between which division was considered better also having winless teams more often.  The East was more dominant in the mid-to-late 90s and had all the winless teams.  Once the West took over, it began having winless teams.  Hmmph.

Next we'll look at each winless squad's point differential....

So while very bad, Arkansas was only the 5th-worst 0-8 SEC team in the past 26 years or so.  However, it has set the record (if my math is correct) for having the worst defense for a winless team since division play began.

1994 Kentucky was THE worst 0-8 squad.  A bad offense and a bad defense (even when compared to other 0-8 teams) yields all-time-bad futility.  This was 2 years before the same HC had Tim Couch running the option.
The Mildcats scored in single digits in 5 of their 8 conference games.
They allowed scores of 73, 41, 47, and 52.  This team was so bad, they gave up 59 points to Indiana OOC.
Led by the great Bill Curry, this UK roster contains literally only 2 players I recognize.  And I'm a psycho Florida fan.  We play them every year.
Moe Williams - a legit good RB, but not getting enough carries in '94
Kio Sanford - not a car, a good returner and eventually, a decent WR

The team leader in pass attempts was a human named Jeff Speedy, who threw 1 TD and 8 INT.  Four other players thew a pass for the Wildcats, for some reason.  The defense only came up with 7 INT all year.  Their kicker only made half his attempts.  An all-around turd of a team.

Congrats to Arkansas for NOT measuring up to the 1994 Kentucky Wildcats!

2012 Auburn rates third-worst, just two years after winning a national championship.

2009 Vandy and 2010 Ole Miss are even, but in VERY different ways.  Rebels' fans got a lot more entertaining losing for their money.

I have decided since last year that Chavis is a total fraud at DC.  When he's got great players he's OK, but give him average guys ( like at A&M or Ark) and see the results.  Our Defense, with most of the same players, has played light years better under Elko than with Chavis and can actually stop the run.

How many of those 0-8 teams were with new head coaches who want to run a totally different scheme than what the team they inherited was built for?
