Title: 2019 B1G Volleyball Thread
Post by: MarqHusker on June 25, 2019, 10:28:28 PM
Can't let this news slide until August when it would be most appropriate to start this thread once the season schedules are finalized.  Though, expect Stanford to be prohibitive favorite to repeat.

Iowa's Head Coach Bond Shymansky was fired last week for giving a player an 'impermissible benefit.'  Shymansky was put on administrative leave in May while the school investigated.  Shymansky (an Iowa alum and native) was silent during the leave, but then issued this statement after his firing.  Sounds like NCAA is now investigating.

"Former University of Iowa Head Women's Volleyball Coach Bond Shymansky acknowledges that an NCAA violation was committed when he provided financial assistance to a team member during the summer of 2017 to cover her rent."
This next part is from Shymansky.
"For the past month, I have cooperated with the University's request to remain silent regarding the underlying basis for my suspension. Now that I have been terminated, it is time to shed light on the details and end any wild speculation.
"I did not discriminate against, abuse or harass anyone — and there has never been an allegation of sexual misconduct against me. In an act of compassion, I advanced funds to cover a young woman's unanticipated summer expenses in 2017. She came to Iowa City expecting to be on full scholarship, but when that status changed, she had nowhere else to turn. I have prided myself on running an NCAA-compliant program. However, I understand that I didn't 'do it right' by NCAA standards in this one instance and I am prepared to accept whatever sanction is deemed appropriate by the NCAA.

"I was born and raised a Hawkeye and wish to stay a part of this great community. I know big things are in store for coach Brown and the rest of the exceptional young women on our volleyball program. As a man of faith, I humbly apologize to anyone that my actions may have negatively impacted, and look forward to the next chapter in my life."

Pretty strong statement by Shymansky.  Without knowing how this became known, or frankly mismanaged by Iowa/Shymansky, hard to allocate fault, though you would think the Coach knows how to manage the scholarships/roster, and if not him, aren't there 19 compliance officers in these ADs.  Curious how the player contributed to this situation, if at all.

sounds like coach gave the player some cash for rent, rumors started that the cash was for something else

just wanted to set the record straight

Yes, that's the consensus of a variety of reports.  All the more reason it's a head scratcher from a roster/scholly management standpoint for the HC and the AD.

well, the lady Hawks are in a tough conference trying to compete, didn't want to lose a valuable player because of lack of ships

OSU had a scrimmage in their new arena a few weeks back, and it was pretty sweet. Still had that new arena smell. The younger Sandbothe sister has transferred from K-State to Ohio State, which was a pleasant surprise. We are coming for ya, Big Red.

Speaking of the Huskers, my HS hired Hunter Atherton's mom to coach their VB team. The last coach won 145 consecutive Conference games over the last 12 years, and went to six Final Fours. So pretty big shoes to fill.

OSU has a whopping 19 players on the roster this year, so they should be better suited to withstand their annual rash of injuries. Home girl Rachel Kirchner is not one of them, unfortunately, but they can never take away the pair of trillions that she posted.

I have zero sympathy for Iowa, since they are the ones that are responsible for getting OSU's 99 and 00 seasons vacated. What goes around comes around. I will of course still root for them whenever they take on the Wolverines. But only then.

So the new setter enrolled early, and was the only healthy setter on the roster for all of their spring scrimmages in March and April. So she's all broken in. Then they rolled out all nine of the noobs (2 grad transfers, 7 frosh) for the June scrimmage in the new Arena. That event kicked off a S American tour through Brazil, Peru, etc. So the Buckeyes have had plenty of time to gel heading into Training Camp.

But there's a cap, right -- maximum allowable scholarship roster? And rosters sometimes or often exceed that cap, requiring that some players (even those on a team that is maximally funded) receive a partial or zero scholarship?

The Nebraska volleyball team is ranked second in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Huskers received one of the 64 first-place votes and totaled 1,451 points. Stanford, which received 62 first-place votes, took the No. 1 ranking with 1,598 points. The Cardinal defeated the Huskers in the NCAA Championship match last December in Minneapolis, 3-2. The two teams will meet this regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. This marks the second straight year the Huskers will begin the season at No. 2.

Minnesota (1,414), Texas (1,385) and Wisconsin (1,329) rounded out the top five. Other Big Ten teams in the top 10 included No. 6 Illinois and No. 8 Penn State. The Nittany Lions received the final first-place vote. Nebraska is scheduled to play 12 regular-season matches against teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Poll.

The Huskers return five starters from last year's team, including first-team All-America middle blocker Lauren Stivrins.

I'll be surprised if Nebraska is picked to finish 1st in the B1G.  Zero seniors, no more Foecke or Maloney.   Unknown, or at least unproven consistent situations on the pins.

Nebraska got pushed to 4 sets by Creighton.

Horns beat LSU 3-0 in a scrimmage last week, and beat Northern Iowa 3-1 yesterday in the first real match of the season.  Next up:

USC 9/1
Minnesota 9/4
@Stanford 9/8
BYU 9/13 (@Wichita)
Wichita State 9/14 (@Wichita)

And then on to the conference slate.  Gonna be a fun couple of weeks.

Rather than simply having "General Admission" like St Johns, they now assign seats at the ticket box based on some algorithm that determines the "best available" seat.

So the building itself is fine. But OSU has successfully managed to make it suck.

Dandy of a match in Madison tonight.  #11 Marquette won its second consecutive match on the road at another top 10 opponent, dropping the #4 Badgers in 5 sets.  Marquette let the first two sets get away from them, but won 3rd and 4th in some bonus volleyball, before taking command into the 5th set.  First ever win over Bucky.  Wisconsin turns around to host Baylor tomorrow night, another feisty program.

Minnesota got swept again already this year, this time at the hands of Texas.

sample size still pretty small.    Minnesota getting run by FSU was a surprise,  less so Texas.   Illinois had two nice wins over Tenn. being short handed a few players.   I dunno,  Stanford continues its tour after Texas, to Penn St and then Nebraska, so we'll learn some more.

Michigan plays a pathetic schedule, and was smoked by Mizzou on a neutral site,  so we can't gauge much if anything. Iowa's had a nice start, following the ousting of their HC.

If it isn't the best league, it is the 2nd best league.

Big Ten might be third behind the ACC after tonight.

Notre Dame wins the state title vs Purdue, and OSU was the main course in a Panther feeding frenzy.

One was an upset, the other went chalk.

Of course ND lost to wright state last week, so... by the transitive property...

That was a great match.  Always more fun to win, but the wonderful thing about college volleyball is we get to see lots of these types of matches at both the beginning AND end of the season.

Perhaps the travel and gauntlet catching up w Stanford.   They beat PSU in 4 tough sets last night but Minnesota takes them down in 4.

The AVCA poll is a joke and will further that rep. if they vote Nebraska #1 this week.   They have looked very mediocre.   Helmet status.   Nebraska hosts Stanford on Wed.

The Nebraska volleyball team moved to No. 1 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, which was announced on Monday.

The Huskers received 37 of 64 first-place votes and totaled 1,550 points. Stanford dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 with 23 first-place votes and 1,538 points. Texas, Penn State and Baylor rounded out the top five.

It marks the first time the Huskers have held the No. 1 spot since the final poll of the 2017 NCAA Championship season. It also marks the Huskers' nation-leading 100th week all-time holding the No. 1 ranking in the AVCA poll.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Huskers will host No. 2 Stanford, which held the No. 1 spot all season until a 3-1 loss against Minnesota on Saturday. Wednesday's match, which will be televised on BTN, will be the first time NU has played a match as the No. 1 team in the nation since Nov. 26, 2016. It will be the fifth all-time No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up in program history. The Huskers are 2-2 all-time in No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-ups. The only other No. 1 vs. No. 2 match played in Lincoln was on Aug. 26, 1995, when No. 1 Stanford beat No. 2 Nebraska, 3-1.

Huskers have the pedigree.  It'll all sort itself out over the season, plenty of competition to test the Huskers all season long, especially in the B1G.

Last Wednesday’s volleyball match between No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Stanford was the most-watched volleyball match in Big Ten Network history, according to Nielsen. The rematch of last season’s national championship averaged 226,765 viewers, which eclipsed a mark previously set by the Nebraska vs. Minnesota match in October of 2018.

In addition to the television broadcast, the FOX Sports app live stream brought in over 718,000 minutes of total consumption, which also broke a record for the most-watched BTN volleyball stream ever. Social media content supplemented the linear broadcast and live stream, with BTN’s on-campus program producing 55 pieces of video content across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The videos promoted the match as well as BTN’s larger volleyball coverage, garnering an additional 149,085 video views from Sept. 16 – 22.

The match was a part of BTN’s newly themed Wednesday Night Block Party, which will include Wednesday night doubleheaders throughout October as well as the B1G Volleyball Report following the matches. The B1G Volleyball Report offers highlights and analysis from the night’s games as well as insight into the broader storylines across the Big Ten Conference.

This week on BTN’s Wednesday Night Block Party, Ohio State will host Maryland at 7 p.m. ET. On Friday, it’s a matchup of two ranked teams when No. 3 Nebraska visits No. 20 Illinois at 8:30 p.m. ET and on Saturday, No. 15 Purdue takes on No. 7 Minnesota at 8 p.m. ET. All televised matches can be streamed exclusively on the FOX Sports app.

in the bottom news department,  :)Stanford goes 1-1 (winning at Nebraska, losing at home to BYU) last week, and moves to the top spot of the AVCA poll.   Baylor (along with Cal, the remaining undefeated)  is #2 this week, with nearly the same amount of 1st place votes as the Cardinal.

#3 Nebraska
#4 Pittsburgh
#5 PSU
#6 Texas
#7 Minnesota
#8 Washington
#9 BYU
#10 Marquette

B1G play begins this week.

• The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team begins Big Ten play with a pair of matches in Illinois this weekend. Nebraska plays at No. 20 Illinois at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Champaign. That match will be televised on BTN and streamed on FoxSports.com and the FoxSports app. The Huskers will make a quick turnaround and face Northwestern on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Evanston. That match will not be televised but will be streamed on the BTN+ app and BTNPlus.com (subscription necessary).

I'm guessing this is why our message board friend "SkersFan" is not coming in for the tOSU game.  He is friends with John Cook and obviously Cook is on a roadtrip this weekend.

Probably the least attractive 5 set 3 hr+ match I've seen in awhile but Nebraska pulls it out in 5 sets.  I don't think Nebraska wins that w/o the Desneberg sub in the back row for 4th and 5th.  The reason Nebraska finds a way to win, usually, is serve receive and passing.   That's been a problem this year,  and I think Cook knows they are in trouble w/o the sub.

Expect to see more of her subbing for Lexi,  who is much better this year on the attack OH.

With six matches left here's a current snapshot of the standings.  Things at the top going pretty much to script.  UW/Minn play this week on BTN.  Rutgers won its first ever road match in its B1G history.    Nationally, Texas is #1 with Pitt#2 and Baylor#3.  UW and Stanford round out top 5.    Stanford has had some significant injuries but are starting to get players back as the tournament approaches.

Baylor knocks off Texas in Waco tonight (5 sets).
Barring something strange happening in the final week, I'd say Baylor and Texas have 2/4 regional host gigs locked down.

Probably a cluster of Pitt/Stanford/Wisconsin/Minnesota/Nebraska/Kentucky fighting for other two.

• The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team hits the road for a pair of top-10 Big Ten matches this weekend. The Huskers will face No. 7 Minnesota on Friday at 8 p.m. at Maturi Pavilion. Then on Sunday, the Big Red travels to No. 5 Wisconsin for a 1:30 p.m. matinee against the league-leading Badgers at the Wisconsin Field House. Both matches will be televised on BTN and streamed on FoxSports.com and the FoxSports app.

• At 15-1, Wisconsin leads the Big Ten standings with four matches to go. Nebraska and Minnesota are tied with Penn State for second place with 14-2 conference records. Penn State hosts both Wisconsin and Minnesota the last weekend of the season.

Weird match.  Nebraska cruised early and then Cook benches about everybody in the 4th when they looked like a bad club team.   A smoke fest in the fifth.    15-3. Madi Kubik is a helluva freshman, playing six rotations.  She s got every swing in her arsenal.  I still don't have deep tourney hopes for this team, but they've got a nice group of young kids.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team completed the regular season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) victory against Ohio State in front of 8,170 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night.

NU finished the regular season at 25-4 overall and 17-3 in the Big Ten, which put them in a three-way tie for second place in the final standings with Penn State and Minnesota, one game behind league champion Wisconsin.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the No. 5 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night and will host the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds at the Bob Devaney Sports Center next weekend.

The Huskers, making their 38th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will open the tournament on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. against the Ball State Cardinals (20-11), champions of the Mid-American Conference. The 4:30 p.m. match will feature the Northern Iowa Panthers (24-10) of the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Tigers (21-7) of the SEC. Friday's winners will meet on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

Baylor, Texas, Stanford and Wisconsin received the top four seeds from the NCAA Tournament committee. Should those teams all advance past the first weekend, they would host an NCAA regional the following weekend. Nebraska is in Wisconsin's region along with No. 12 national seed Hawaii and No. 13 Texas A&M. The Huskers would only have an opportunity to host an NCAA regional if they advance past the opening two rounds and Wisconsin gets upset in the first or second round.

Committee was very very kind to BIG.  Illinois scrapes in, Nebraska gets a 5? How?  Wtf.  Pitt bumped to a 6 and may face PSU a third time in regionals.

Some interesting  2nd round matches shaping up for those of us who follow.  I've been less in tune this year w various life distractions but should be dialed in for this.  I see NET streaming 1st/2nd rd. Nobody produces better vball for broadcast than NET.

I like the possibility of a Hawai'I Nebraska SW16 match.  Haven't played much lately. Two wild fanbases would make for an endless internet thread.

Rutgers fired CJ what's his name.  Guy managed to last 12 years.  Tough gig, recruit somebody to play in a community gym in a state w little vball talent in the toughest league in the land.

Their Asst coach's ability to recruit Europe strategy has yielded some improvement, and it can work, St. John's backed into the tourney that way this year.  They have to put some $ into any facility to recruit any talent w a straight face.

All on ESPNU today, all times eastern.

8 Washington at 1 Baylor, 4pm
5 Nebraska at 4 Wisconsin, 6pm
Louisville vs 7 Minnesota, 8pm (Austin, TX)
11 Penn St at 3 Stanford, 10pm

2 schools in their first ever Elite 8,  Nebraska's 8th consecutive Elite 8.
4 of the 8 looking for first title.   Washington was the last 'new' school to win a title, over a decade ago.
PSU at Stanford played each other in September and again in last year's Elite 8.
Wash has never played Baylor in volleyball.

New blood dammit!   Only ten teams have won a title in this sport in its nearly 40 years, and Washington was the last one in '05.   Only 3 of those ten are not on the 'west coast'.    I will have to DVR this one Sat.    Been buried lately as well work towards the sale of our company, so haven't caught much of this tourney.

my quick handicap on this one:   Stanford is obviously formidable.  I did see a set and a half of the match last night vs Minn on replay Plummer looks back to 100% (she missed about a month and a half, thus she wasn't qualified for AA status, denying her a 4th consecutive 1st team AA Team selection), she was her usual best collegiate player self last night.   Gray and Gates looked spectacular, Hentz is Hentz.    UW has their work cut out for them, but if they get the kind of production that Haggerty and Loberg have been giving this tournament, this should be a very good match.  If its predominantly  Rettke, UW is going to be in trouble, even with a great setter in Hilley.    UW is in this spot IMO, because they are finally successful in serving really aggressively and getting better contributions from others OH.   Baylor, which beat Wisconsin in Madison in Sept,  was flustered in serve receive last night, and the setter had no chance, and frankly had a tough night.   I hope UW serves to Plummer as much as possible, not that she's bad in receive, but gotta make her work, make others take swings.  I doubt they can out-offense Stanford, which frankly toyed with Minnesota last night with transition play.

The Nebraska volleyball program and head coach John Cook announced the addition of Missouri transfer Kayla Caffey to the Huskers' 2020 roster on Thursday. Caffey, a 6-0 middle blocker, completed two seasons with the Tigers and earned her bachelor's degree and will be a graduate transfer for the Huskers this fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

"Kayla will bring a lot of offensive firepower to our team," Cook said. "She was one of the leading hitters in the SEC and we like the fact that she's a graduate student and has a lot of experience. She played at a storied high school program, Mother McAuley in Chicago. She's got an offensive-oriented game and is very athletic. We're excited about the impact she can make with our team."

Caffey earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education at Missouri and will pursue a master's degree in elementary education at Nebraska. In 2019, Caffey ranked second in the SEC and ninth nationally with a .408 overall hitting percentage during the season. Her .417 hitting percentage in SEC play also ranked second in the conference. Caffey averaged 1.77 kills per set and had a team-high 82 blocks for the Tigers last year, who went 22-8 and were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by the Huskers at the Devaney Center.

Caffey had a career-high 13 kills on .684 hitting in a Nov. 8 win against Alabama. She had 12 matches where she hit .400 or better and had a career-high six blocks three times during her sophomore season.

The NCAA voted on Tuesday to allow women’s volleyball to begin matches starting Jan. 22, 2021.

In addition to the known start date, the NCAA also announced its plans for the NCAA Tournament in the spring. This year’s tournament will be selected on April 4 with the Final Four to be played the weekend of April 23-25. NCAA host sites are likely to feature more teams than usual, as well.

This year’s NCAA Tournament will featured a pared down field. The bracket will shrink from 64 to 48 teams, with 32 automatic qualifiers and 16 at-large bids. The Final Four had been slated to be hosted in Omaha before the season was postponed, and that could still be the case. The NCAA has not yet announced where the final matches will take place.

Some conferences like the Big 12 are playing a split season, with some matches in the fall and spring, but the Big Ten opted to play all of its matches in the spring only.

The NCAA said those fall matches will be factored in to the selection process next spring.

“Contests conducted in the fall term for all fall sport championships that will be conducted in the spring will count toward selection into that respective championship. Sport committees are encouraged to consider all data available to them at the time of selections.

Omaha was scheduled to host the 2020 NCAA Championship this December, but that event was postponed until April 23-25, 2021, due to the global pandemic. The NCAA has not yet officially announced if Omaha will remain as the host site for the volleyball championship this spring.
