Title: Texas, Florida announce future home-and-home series
Post by: utee94 on May 10, 2019, 12:35:53 PM
In 2031 and 2032.

So Texas' future OOC schedule continues its trend of having one pretty nice marquee program each season and a couple of regional teams and/or scrubs for season openers and regional recruiting purposes, and now looks like this:

2019: LaTech, LSU, @Rice
2020: USF, @LSU, UTEP
2021: ULaLa, @Arkansas, Rice
2022: Alabama, UTSA
2023: Rice, @Alabama
2024: Colorado State, Michigan, UTSA
2025: Ohio State, UTEP
2026: @Ohio State, UTSA
2027: @Michigan, UTEP
2028: Georgia, UTSA
2029: @Georgia, UTEP
2030: @Florida, UTSA
2031: Florida, UTEP
2032: @Arizona State
2033: Arizona State

The Arkansas game doesn't really thrill me all that much, but it's an old rivalry so I can live with it.  Arizona State is somewhat less interesting to me as well, but there's only so many marquee teams out there I suppose.

Other than the two you mentioned, Utee, those are some studley opponents you've got lined up there.  Many are the same as the ones OU has lined up.

Maybe the ADs of both schools are reading from the same primer on how to schedule if you want to get into the CFP.

For sure that's part of it.

I also think it's a shot to the portions of each of our two fan bases that seem to want to change conferences, as if the ADs are saying, "Look, we can schedule the best in the SEC and the B1G, without having to change conferences."

And I can't say I disagree, I love the idea of playing the Alabamas and Georgias and Michigans and Ohio States, without having to play their conference dregs like Illinois and Indiana and Kentucky and Texas A&M.

This right here. ^^^
For all the hand wringing and teeth gnashing about the Big 12 being "disadvantaged" (Yeah, that was me), the Big 12 now looks pretty rosy.  I am sooooo glad OU didn't flip to the PAC 12.  With the new TV deals and OOC schedules like this, I'm feeling pretty good about the conference.

I wonder if there's an additional agenda.  I don't know about the UT fan-base, but a lot of Sooner fans want to see OU in the SEC.  I don't think the OU administration wants to be in the SEC, and having the OOC schedule loaded with SEC teams for the next decade and a half would make it difficult to reconstitute that OOC schedule if OU did indeed join that conference.

It might not be as devious as all that, it could be as simple as attempting to give those fans what they want, without the logistical problems of actually switching to the SEC (or any other conference that is less geographically close to OU as the current B12 is).

Doesn't bother me, other than the losses they keep handing us.

I like West Virginia.  But their location is a big negative for the conference, both short-term and long-term, I think.

I notice some programs previously not willing to travel much OOC now are scheduling distance opponents.  One article suggested it was because ADs think an 8 team playoff is in the offing (I'm not at all confident about that).

Title: Re: Texas, Florida announce future home-and-home series
Post by: CWSooner on June 02, 2019, 10:47:55 AM
I hope it ain't so.

An 8-team playoff, that is.

I think the 8 team thing is a decade away, or more, so meh.  I like 4, and I could be talked into 5 or 6 maybe.

Title: Re: Texas, Florida announce future home-and-home series
Post by: utee94 on June 03, 2019, 02:17:27 PM
I think an 8-team playoff is inevitable and is more like 4-6 years away.  One main reason-- it'll make even more money.  Secondary reason, it would allow auto-bids to G5 teams and relieve some of the anti-trust pressure that grows stronger every year against the powers that be of college football.  It's really a win-win for "big football."

For the average fan, it has some advantages and some disadvantages.  There are things I don't love about it, but there are things I don't love about the current playoff.  And the BCS before that.  And the Alliance before that.

I still like the old bowl system for the most part.  Everything has pros and cons.

If I could wave a magic wand I'd go back to the conference alignments and bowl affiliations from about 1980.   I'd also transport ESPN back to about 1990 magically kill off the 24/7 sports news cycle.

Texas and Oklahoma are doing some serious OOC scheduling, are they not?  Of course it takes two to tango, and I imagine this isn't really a change for them, I know both played Ohio State in the past.  Anyway, I like marquis matchups, even if they don't happen until 2076.

The key to marquis ooc games is to have them early and to limit them to 1

per season

Marquis must be some kind of French word.

Yep.

"Marquee" is correct when talking about premier CFB matchups.

The French resistance fighters were known as "Maquis", if I spelled that right.  Seems like some 75th anniversary is looming.

The Maquis (French pronunciation: [maˈki]) were rural guerrilla bands of French Resistance fighters, called maquisards, during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.

that's a stout ooc slate for a decade. seems a lot of teams are taking this approach.

ut and ou have both been mentioned.

uga has nd, oregon, ou, clemson, ucla, texas, fsu all in the next decade or so.
bama has usc, miami, texas, wvu, nd, and ou
lsu has texas, ucla, clemson, asu, ou
au has oregon, ucla, cal, penn st, unc, baylor

mich and osu both have a pretty good slate as well. and i'm sure there's several i'm missing. looks like a lot of pac teams on those lists, so i'm sure they look formidable as well.

good decade coming up it looks like.

Definitely.  I love the big intersectional matchups.  And the mar-key college teams all seem to be doing more of it recently.  Good times ahead!

Virginia also, but that's not a big add, and of course GT each year.

2021 still has an opening, only GT scheduled that year.  Some rather epic years looming.

2028

2029

didn't include gt because it's annual, so no change from status quo.
didn't include uva for same reason i didn't include duke for bama. just not a premier name.

those 2 years are insane, btw. added to au, tenn, uf, usce, uk, vandy and mizz and another sec w team (bama looks possible if not likely for 1 of the 2 years based on current year spacing between games, lsu not so much) and that's one i'm not sure any team in history could come out unscathed. that's of course assuming all/most of those teams are as good as their names suggest they should be.

You schedule programs, not teams.  UGA could be mediocre by then, or UVA might be very good.  Probably not.  GT doesn't seem to me to have much shot.
Clemson is on a serious roll right now.  Maybe Dabo goes to some program where a certain coach retires though.
