Any one care yet?
This is a season that greatly needs to be reduced, down to like 50-60 regular season games. The fact that the NFL plays 16, NBA plays 82 and MLB plays 162 makes sense. NHL shouldn't be equal to NBA, it should be somewhere in between. It's why the early playoff rounds are great, and usually the conference and Cup finals are pretty bad hockey.
Start the season the first week of December and play like 25 less games, it would be great.
Anyway, my picks...

Who the hell are the Golden Knights? I swear I couldn't place the franchises in the proper divisions/conferences with a week's time. Ever since they dropped Adams/Patrick/Norris/Smythe, I've been out of it.
Yes, shorten the season. I'd even support 154 in MLB just to tighten up on both ends of the calendar.
-
The new Vegas team.
Eh, I like the divisions better, but I can't keep them straight. That's probably more of a lack of following the regular season than anything though, because I certainly couldn't tell you the old non-geographical ones.
I know Detroit doesn't play Chicago much anymore, which sucks, but I also know they don't play a bunch of late night west coast games either, which is great.
-
Ovi with 7 goals in two games
-
Not going to pay much attention in October, but Vegas is 6-1?

Was looking for this thread with the playoffs starting, and took forever to find it. Guess it hasn't been bumped since the first week of the season. I think the Red Wings and Blackhawks used to generate the most discussion, so that makes sense. It also seems like a lot of the NBA/NHL thread discussion came from posters who weren't quite as regular and maybe didn't make it over here. Anyway, my interest in NHL regular season has never been lower, but the playoffs are always fun.
Couple picks, the Capitals finally get past the Penguins, and get all the way to the Cup finals, where they lose to Nashville. Devils knock off the top team in the East, the Lightning, and they beat the Bruins/Leafs winner to make a surprise run to the conference finals, where the Caps are finally too much for them.
-
Well I'm kinda pulling for the BlueJackets, to throw a wrench in you playoff scenerio.
-
It would be fitting for the Jackets to lose in the semifinals, like OSU's men's and women's ice hockey teams.
-
Jackets take game one. On the road. In OT.

-
Stupid penalty in the offensive zone on the Caps Burakovsky up 3-2 with 5 minutes left in the game. That can't happen.
-
And Columbus steals a 2nd game from the Capitols.
Both Games C-bus finds themselves down 2 goals. Both games come back and win it in OT.
I'm Dumb Struck, these lovable losers may actually pull this series off. (but for me 18 years of dissapointment still trumps a 2-0 lead.)

-
And Washington gets on OT win.
-
Imagine how big this Vegas story would be if it happened in the NFL, NBA or MLB
-
It's a pretty cool story. Ive got my cliffs notes, so Ive been watching now.. caps with a classic plinko style goal in OT.
-
Ahh...there's the implosion I was expecting.
-
At least it's the one entertaining series. Off the top of my head I think it's the only series that didn't go 3-1 or 4-0
-
Caps were dominant last night. Holtby looks dialed in headed back to DC. This is what the Caps do though. They always draw you back in and set you up for crushing disappointment.
-
I dunno who's in more trouble. The Cavs or the Jackets.
-
Jackets: 1 win from elimantion, never made past 1st round of playoffs, don't have the most dominate player in the league on their roster.
-
It's kind of crazy that the Golden Knights won a series before the Blue Jackets have.

What the Knights have done in their Ingural season is amazing, no team has done it.
BlueJackets 16 years of ineptitude is well...inept.
-
Not that hard to believe.
The Jackets have always been awful, whereas the Knights have never been awful.
-
I'm kinda glad the BJ's have made the playoffs 3 years running now. It means they are at least average. And there playoff losses confirm that they are just average.
-
This Preds-Jets game 2 is so unbelievably good. So much skill and speed on display.
-
Caps beat the Pens!
-
This is the first I've seen Vegas play in the playoffs. Do they always do this elaborate pregame routine? This is incredible
-
They do, from what I gather. San Jose also does quite an elaborate opening. It's over the top, but again, it probably should be, given what it is.
Hard to root against either of these teams. I gotta pull for Winnipeg. One of the fishing guides we hire in Canada is so hardcore, We fish a few hours east of Winnipeg. He was so excited the see a team come back, and was always wearing Jets gear in the boat.
I was looking ahead to next week as I have to go to DC for a few days and for like the 4th straight time, I barely miss a Caps home game, I've been trying to make it to an NHL playoff game for years, and I get so close. Oh well, Padres at Nats it is.

Same here. My dad does business with a guy from Winnipeg, and we have a family friend who played for a Stanley Cup winning team, so he got to go to his day with the Cup. I thought that was a cool thing, when my dad mentioned it to his Winnipeg partner, you would have thought he told him he had been in the Beatles. The guy lost it. It means so much to those fans up there, and they haven't won one. I like the Vegas team well enough, but I can't really feel bad for fans of an expansion team not winning it.
-
Plus they have to live in a place that has appropriately been nicknamed Winter-peg, Mani-snow-ba.
-
Pulling for the Jets, but I think Vegas wins this series. Still getting comfortable with Nashville owning a soccer team.... Vegas.....
While the Vegas story is interesting, I'm sure hockey fans as a whole don't like it. Basically, the NHL gave them a championship caliber team....
-
They really didn't though. They got lucky that the Penguins had two great goalies, but beyond that they got guys nobody wanted.
-
I'm not sure I'd say "nobody wanted"... They were not the stars from other teams, but they were wanted... I know my memory is foggy, but I don't recall other expansion teams having this level of depth or skill in year one.
Yes, they're motivated. Yes, several guys are having great years and the coaching/decisions are working. Yes, having a great goalie makes a team look a lot better... but they've been skating circles around the Jets. Those are not guys who were unwanted... For example.. the last expansion draft, teams could protect between 12-15 players... this one, 9 to 11. They also had a lot of salary cap room that allowed them to make trades others could not or moves that others could not... I wouldn't say these guys were unwanted. I think they had options other teams have not in past expansions. They also were set up to compete right away.
I think you'll see changes if the NHL ever expands again. jmo, of course

Well it's coming fairly soon with Seattle

Well it's coming fairly soon with Seattle
Is it officially Seattle? I thought Houston was still out there too. Hell, I think the NHL and it's owners love this, all it's doing is driving up the price to buy the expansion team, if you know under this model you don't have to suck for 5-6 years first.
-
I am not sure its official yet.
-
I didn't think it was official..
btw... NHL playoffs >>>> NBA playoffs While the playoffs are much better with the Detroit in them, there have been some great games this year.
-
Vegas vs Caps
One team completely built by George McPhee, the other team largely built by George McPhee.
-
I think of all possible Stanley Cup Finals matchups once we got to the Conference Finals, this is the one I thought would be the most interesting
-
the first two games of the finals have been really really good. The Capitals seem to have figured out that Vegas will overplay and that has given them some opportunities the Jets did not have... Still impressed with Vegas' ability to disrupt.
