What in the world? I have a heavy heart right now.
-
Absolutely gut-wrenching news to wake up to.
-
The gunman was from Mesquite, NV; a small town that I have spent quite a bit of time in.
-
No apparent link to terrorism so it's hard to understand. The country needs to start funding mental health much much more and start locking up the insane again. If that would have made a difference here I have no idea.

I'd also add this country needs to realize that disagreeing is ok and just because someone has a different opinion than you, doesn't make them morally bankrupt or trying to destroy you. In general, this country is getting angrier and more hostile. Sadly, I expect more of this..
-
We don't know the whole story yet. Let's not speculate. At least let's try.

To this I will agree. We just got done with the one of the most divisive 8 year periods in our short history, in my opinion. It's not stopping under current leadership, either. It's probably going to get worse. As in, much worse. We all need to try to help settle down.
-
I wasn't speculating on the motive.. just adding that we, as a country, have become more angry imo. Regardless of the motive, the inability to deal with others in a constructive fashion is not a good trend.

What's terrible in the aftermath is that both sides are already posturing for a handle on the narrative.
There's no hoping for a break from this reality where the littlest thing has to turn political. Just exhausted.

The quick trigger to immediately politicize this tragedy by both sides, ESPECIALLY before all the facts are in, is absolutely disgusting.
-
It's sad, but access to guns is pretty easy, and so long as that's the case angry homicidal people can get them and this will continue to happen. It's pretty much a bimonthly event at this point.

100 percent agree. That's why I asked for us to not speculate here.
WE should be in charge.

You just couldn't resist, could'ja?
-
It's pretty tough to get the kinds of weapons he used. I'm really curious where they came from, and when.
-

It's just a statement of reality at this point. Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't seen one of these at a football game.
-
I would say the shooter seems pretty interesting, by way of being completely uninteresting. So far no prior history with law enforcement, no history of mental illness, a former accountant who lived in a retirement community. All of this is obviously preliminary and new information will turn up.
-
this shit makes me sad, is ALL I can really offer with certainty right now. We'll be told sooner than later how to feel about it, who's at fault and who to blame with hatred justified by our handlers. Meanwhile, at current count there are 50 lives gone and a great number more dramatically impacted forever. And for what?
-
it's impossible for me to comprehend how someone could do something so irreprehensible.
-
to quote John Coffey (pronounce 'Jawn Caw-fee') -"just like the drink only not spelled the same" :
"I'm tired now boss, dawg tired.... "...mostly tired of people being ugly to each other."

(Hmmmm, first time I posted, it didn't work. We'll try again)
Not sure if this is appropriate here, but here goes....
I worked at an engineering office a few years ago with about 60 engineers. One of the engineers I worked with for about three years was a kindly older gentleman (maybe 64-ish) who was an electrical engineer and had worked with the company for 30 years. In the time I knew him, he never cussed and never raised his voice to another engineer. Heck, someone who had worked next to him for 30 years told me that the guy had never even gotten a speeding ticket. He had a wife, two daughters, and 4 grandkids.
I'd known him two years when his wife died. Overall, he was a little sadder after that, but they had been married for over forty years, and she had died suddenly, so there was no prolonged suffering. He seemed to be coping well and outside of the week he was gone for funeral arrangements, he came back to work and kept chugging through projects.
About six months after that, he didn't show up for work, and then was gone for two weeks. His desk was quietly cleaned out, and it took me two months to find out what happened.
Turns out, he had been regularly raping his grandson about once a week after his wife died. His youngest daughter had to turn him in to the police and he is currently serving a 15 year sentence. His grandson will be in therapy for years to come.
The point to this story is, we all think that we are well adjusted people who could never commit the atrocities that we see on the news everyday. Sadly, I've come to the conclusion that there are just a certain set of right circumstances (or wrong ones, I guess) that can just make you crack. The mind can sometimes be a little fragile, and it's a lot easier than you think to convince yourself that the world is mad and you are the only sane one in it.

A possibility, and I'm speculating based on the sound of the firing, is that these were legal semi-automatic weapons equipped with "bump fire", which also is legal.

My neighbor (this morning) and I were talking about this (bump fire) walking our kids to the bus stop. He's done a variety of tours in the Gulf, and he had a lot a few interesting comments about this LV shooting. Immediately suspected it was bump fire, and said the (likely) policy of turning on the flood lights, made matters worse, not better for the crowd, and then said how, while he understands why people do it, people freezing and not moving is always the worst choice in a situation like this.
-
The bump fire tactic no doubt compromises the accuracy of the shooter greatly, but the effect (the sounds of automatic fire) is achieved and presumably the objective.
-
The shots I heard on the news did not sound like full auto fire. More like someone pulling the trigger as fast as possible but too regularly spaced for that. What came to mind was a paddle crank I saw on someone use on a 22 semi-auto once.
-
grillrat.. scary story. I'd imagine there are more cases than that one of someone cracking.
temp... have no idea on the sound, but I thought it was said they were fully automatic weapons...???? or is a paddle crank a way to make a semi into an automatic?

It seems unlikely that this shooter would have cared much about compromised accuracy. From what I have read so far it does not appear that there were any specific targets and he was shooting at a very large mass of people. If his goal was simply body-count it would seem that the speed of the fire would have been important to him and the accuracy not very important since hitting someone with a shot would be nearly assured when shooting at such a large mass of people.

I've fired automatic weapons when I was in the Navy.
That was definitely automatic fire.
Bump stocks would give up too much accuracy.
There is a gun show there in 5 days.
10 guns? No one would bat an eye.

The news media is notoriously ignorant when it comes to guns. If someone in law enforcement said weapons were "Fully automatic" I would give that a bit more credence but even there they may have been speaking too soon and just basing that on the sound.
On a typical fully automatic weapon when the bullet gets close to the muzzle (end of barrel), some of the gasses that are propelling the bullet are diverted down a separate tube when then pushes a plunger. That plunger then ejects that round, another round is loaded (automatically), and the gun immediately fires again restarting the process.
Bump-fire and paddle crank are methods of increasing volume of fire without actually having a fully automatic weapon.
Semi-Automatic:
When you fire a semi-automatic the gun automatically ejects the round and loads the next one but does not fire. With a semi-automatic you still need to pull the trigger for each bullet.
Bump-fire and paddle crank are systems to rapidly pull the trigger.

I immediately thought of bump fire, too.
-
it could be a recoil operated automatic loading/firing such as John Browning design, and as applicable in the 1917 M2 which is the longest lasting continuously deployed heavy machine gun in the US arsenal.
it could be that this fool filed the sear down so as the hammer isn't captured, forcing a 'runaway gun', which is when the shooter has no control- you pull the trigger once and hold on until all ammo is expelled/exhausted.
whether it was a fully automatic or a semi- or a freakin' black powder muzzle loader, this freak of a human set forth to intentionally injure masses of people he didn't know or know anything about other than he wanted to kill or maim them....
and that shit is some kind of sad.... the hate someone has to have to engage someone who they know nothing about and isn't trying to harm them is substantial, and it's being fostered in this country actively, by anyone with a platform it seems.
-
Sad,just sad,Godspeed to those affected.A fervent wish, hope and prayer it never occurs again
-
just going to drop this here..... because it's awesome...

We were just out there on a vacation. Stayed three nights at a very nice place that I won't name and then drove to Death Valley and Yosemite, King's Canyon, and Sequoia. The various memorials are still very evidence on the Strip near Mandalay.
Life was going on, as expected. We stayed one more night before our red eye flight (got upgraded to first which is not what it used to be at all).

I'll be there next month for a concert. A country concert, in fact.
Not going to fret. If you let fear keep you from living, the terrorists win, right?

Why not say where you stayed? Half the fun is attempting to remember which casino you were in
O:-)

We stayed at a very nice place that had no casino, just off the Strip. I don't cite the name because of, um, political issues. I don't care, we've stayed there before and really liked it, had a one bedroom deluxe condo with superb pool, a Wolf range and Subzero fridge, first class all the way.
It's across from the Mall.
-
hah, dead give away
I always stay at the Wynn, across from the mall
-
Didn't take you for a high roller the way you get sloppy at Bone Daddy's and all
-
it's always a business trip, no gambling for me
not sure of Steve Wynn's political leaning, I'd guess he maybe a republican backer, but I don't care enough to check into it
-
btw, I prefer to get sloppy across the street from the Wynn at a spot called Strip Burger. It's almost part of the mall
-
We stayed four nights, the last at the airport at a Homewood Suites, which is nice. The three nights at the start of the trip were to relax and do some hiking. We gambled one night and I lost my obligatory $100. The wife who plays "penny slots" was down about $40 when she hit something and made $109 on it and we quit.
I don't understand the allure of the slots but she enjoys it, and she often wins a bit. Sometimes I get bored playing blackjack and quit before I lose my $100, but we go once every two years or so mostly to drive around and see stuff.
I rented a Mustang convertible which she liked a lot and it was easier to see with the top down and the weather overall was awesome, we saw some snow around Tioga Pass but it was still awesome weather.
I'm not very impressed with how the rental Mustangs drive and the build quality was rather lacking IMHO. This was the V-6 and it was paltry indeed. The steering was very numb and unimpressive.
-
I was not whelmed by King's Canyon NP. Some reviews said it was better than Yosemite, but not even close. A long one way drive to turn around and come back. The sequoia groves in Sequoia NP were impressive. The road south from there is the curviest I've ever driven I think, maybe I mentioned that.
-
My go-to start to the day after a long night is to hit the Cromwell for mindless video poker and slots. The cocktail waitresses run you (free) drinks faster than anywhere else I've gambled for the sake of drinks. Yea, I know it's trashy but it's usually when I'm waiting for the rest of my entourage to get out of bed.
-
how are the "free" bloody marys?
