All of these games should be on the BTN.

Not sure I have any of those FSW things. I guess I need to find out.

Yes, it's just one game, but Michigan crushed its Canadian exhibition opponent, Western Ontario, 10-1, while Ohio State lost their's, Ryerson, 4-7. It appears Ryerson is one of the better Canadian teams, while Western Ontario isn't.

Michigan's first two regular season opponents, Clarkson and Saint Lawrence tied and lost to Canadian teams, respectively, so even considering the parity of hockey and they're road games, especially since neither team has been particularly good in recent years (I still don't get why they're scheduled in the first place).

I listened to the radio broadcast and partially watched the Saint Lawrence game. Obviously the MSU game was going on last night. Michigan looked improved, for sure, and it's encouraging to know Penn State had the same results (why they both played them in their rinks this weekend, I don't know), even though Clarkson hasn't been very good in the past (maybe they are this year?.... They still have games at Western Michigan, against UML and Providence, and at Minnesota to prove it....).

Michigan has two games against Vermont at home next, after an off weekend. Vermont split against Colorado College and has away games against Quinnipiac and Union next so if Michigan is decent they should win both.

Apparently the Big Ten still isn't so great. At least it's not Michigan's fault this year so far. They should definitely be ranked this week. They go to Penn State next, which should at least be a split based on the results so far.

I was at the Friday loss to Ferris State last weekend, which was absurd since Michigan had twice as many SOGs.

Fortunately this weekend they beat Minnesota and then only lost in a shootout (and Michigan had some great opportunities to win in regulation), so that's very encouraging, and they should finally be ranked this week. They might not make the tournament, but they'll definitely be competitive against everyone.

So the GLI is apparently now played January 1 and 2?  And since MSU and UM suck, and both lost, they'll meet on a Tuesday afternoon in a consolation game at 2:30 when most people are at work?  I remember when the GLI was a major event.

Schedule conflicts push Great Lakes Invitational to New Year's Day

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/2017/12/31/college-hockey-great-lakes-invitational/993334001/

It's not ideal, but the Great Lakes Invitational will be played later than normal. As a result, it will be held twice at Little Caesars Arena in 2018.
The 53rd GLI, which begins Monday, was pushed from its normal spot in the Detroit sports calendar due to scheduling issues with LCA's main attractions, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons.

It's about that time of year to look at the playoff picture. The Pairwise ranking is the only thing that matters, as it directly mimics the quantitative formula used by the NCAA. At this point the B1G sits in these spots:

#2 Notre Dame - Safely in as a 1 or 2 seed
#6 Ohio State - Safely in. Could land anywhere from a 1 to a 3 seed
#8 Minnesota - Would require a total meltdown to fallout. Im too lazy to do the Pairwise predictor, but I would assume any win or tie in the Penn State series or B1G tourney should lock them in. Probably will land on the 2 or 3 line.

#11 Michigan - Huge sweep against Notre Dame. Safely in at this point. Any hiccups against lowly Arizona State could really drop them though, given how low they sit in the Pairwise. A sweep against ASU is a likely clincher.

#17 Penn State - out right now. Has significant work to do. Needs a weekend sweep against MN at home, and a deep run in the B1G tourney. The need to move up 3 to 4 spots to get above the line, and account for auto bids.

There are some big names on the outside looking in right now. BC, BU, Miami, and Colorado College. North Dakota and Western are also on the cusp. Should be an interesting 2-3 weeks.

3 to 4 teams making the tourney would be a good shot in the arm for the conference.

It would be nice to see Penn State host, since they are a host site in Allentown.

I would rather not see the Gophers in Sioux Falls if UND is in the tourney. They will be hosting that region as a possible 3 or 4 seed. Bizarre that they are hosting at a site that is a 5+ hour drive from their campus in Grand Forks. The NCAA will definitely bunch the two though if they get a chance. It will sell out a regional site for the weekend.

I can't believe they still haven't just gone to the 1 seeds hosting.

agree. Seems foolish, and also unfair to a 1 seed that plays a great season and has to go into the lions den with a bunch of Sioux fans at a site they are hosting. It also would guarantee a nice gate for the NCAA to have 1's hosting.
At least the B1G has made some sense of it with high seeds now hosting throughout for the conference tourney. 2 , 3, and 4 will host 5,6, and 7 in best of three's. Notre Dame will get the first weekend off. Then it goes single elim at top seed sites the next weekend, followed by a championship.
Title: Re: ~~2017-18 Big Ten Hockey Thread~~
Post by: Brutus Buckeye on February 21, 2018, 02:44:10 PM
Speaking of the Big Ten Tourney, there's a lot of seeding that needs to be sorted out.

Notre Dame has clinched the 1 seed, while MSU has clinched the 7.

Ohio State appears to have sewn up the 2, as the only team that can tie them at this point is Minnesota. OSU went 2-1-1-1 vs The Gophers, assuming that the H-H is the tiebreaker.

Seeds 3-6 are still interesting.

Michigan basically has the three seed locked up, although The Gophers can knock them down to a 4 with a sweep of PSU.

If instead the Gophers are swept by Penn State, then PSU would pass Minnesota in the standings.

Wisconsin can also pass the Gophers by sweeping OSU; assuming that the Gophers are swept by PSU.

That would create a tie between the Badgers and Lions. Those two each went 1-1-2-1 against each other, and I have no idea what the next tie breaker would be.

Some positive signs.  I think down the stretch, MSU got a tie with UM, and split weekend series with OSU, UW and PSU
And also earns a split with ND.  Dug themselves too deep a hole, but a solid last 5ish weeks.

Where do yinz think the sweep of Minnesota put PSU in terms of an NCAA at-large?  I have a feeling the Nits are square on the bubble right now.

#13 in the PWR, so I think pretty squarely in now.  Big Ten looking good for 5 teams.

Current B1G pairwise:

2. Notre Dame
6. Ohio State
9T Minnesota
9T Michigan
13 Penn State

Notre Dame and Ohio State are in. At this point Notre Dame has more or less locked itself into a 1 seed. Ohio State could play into a 1 with a deep B1G run or play itself down to 3 if they get swept this weekend. I THINK Michigan and MN are safe with 1 win this weekend. I am sure the USCHO geeks are doing some pairwise predictors that I haven't looked into. A sweep for either could move them down the line though. I THINK Penn State needs to advance beyond this weekend to ensure their spot. If they lose to MN they likely drop a spot or two. And with an upset or two in auto qualifier conference championships they will be on the wrong side of the line.

I think Penn State is in as long as they don't get swept, and they might even be in if they did.
Current status:
2. Notre Dame
4  Ohio State
7  Michigan
11 Penn State
13 Minnesota
Minnesota is in big trouble. They can afford only two below the line conference tourney qualifiers, and that is contingent on no one else jumping them. I am not going out on a limb stating this, but the 4 game sweep by Penn State will be the final nail in the coffin for Don Lucia. Grant Potulny, Don Motzko, Scott Bell are all rumored names.

Of all the non-hockey BigTen schools, I would still think college hockey would make the most sense at Iowa, Nebraska, or even Rutgers, but more power to Illinois if they go through with it. That said, I'm skeptical until they find a big donor like Penn State and Arizona State had.

Oakland and UNLV are looking into D1 hockey, too. Oakland would be an easy addition to the WCHA, as would any Midwestern school (I still think public non-FB schools with minimal basketball success within the Midwest and Northeast like Green Bay, Cleveland State, and Binghamton are obvious potential hockey schools, but what do I know?), while UNLV along with Arizona State would have to align with the Alaska schools, Air Force, and another future program in the West to create a new league, assuming Denver and Colorado College wouldn't leave the NCHC. That said, UAH could join that group and improve its hopes for relevance without increasing its travel costs that much. Time will tell.

Anyway, Michigan should have a 2/3 seed. It's absurd that none of the regionals are actually in the Midwest, though....

Illinois needs some big donors no doubt, but not a huge donor like Penn State.  Under these proposals, private companies are building the arenas rather than the Illinois athletic department.

I love college hockey and I love the new entrants and growth for the sport. But, as more programs add hockey I wonder what it does to the product? Does it get watered down? You have a limited number of states out there that sponsor the sport at a HS level. And in those states there is a very limited entry to who can even keep up with it. We have a mite level player (8 years old) in MN where ice time is more plentiful and less expensive and it cost $700, not including equipment, to go Nov - March. This doesn't include the year around business either. No youth sports are cheap these days but hockey is on a different level. The numbers get further watered down when you factor in those that go the JR or Minor League route permanently in the US and Canada (Tkachuk, Matthews).

It feels like the quality and skill level has dropped off a bit in the last decade. The top lines will always carry top NHL talent like Brock Boeser, Johnny Gaudreau. But the level of play from lines 2,3, and 4 seems to have fallen off.

Going strictly on the eye test for me there is no greater drop off from collegiate to professional than the NCAA hockey to the NHL.

The product has gotten nearly unwatchable over the past 15 or so years.  College hockey used to be a strong #3 for me.  I'd watch whenever it was on, and LOVED going to games at Yost.  Now, it's actually on tv, and I can't do it.  It's no different to me than a random softball game being on.  It's well behind baseball and women's volleyball as far as college sports I enjoy watching.
And yes, watering it down isn't going to help anything.  I think unless it becomes so expansive that it becomes the best route to the pros for Americans again.  BUt yes, too many programs, and more and more America kids not playing college hockey has really hurt the sport.
I remember after years of talking up college hockey to my wife, we went to a CCHA playoff game at Yost in maybe 2011ish?  Hockey is her favorite sport.  Like 5 minutes in, she was like "what is this crap?"  Unless you grew up with the better product, it's a hard thing to sell to someone new now.  It ain't good.

Agree. Funny you mention taking the wife to a game. I took mine to this one: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK8Q2BJ_CPQ  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK8Q2BJ_CPQ)

....on St Patricks Day of 2007. St Paul was rocking for St Patty's and WCHA Final Five. She says to this day this was one of the best sporting events she has attended in a full house XCEL Energy Center, and I have a hard time disagreeing with her.

On the ice that day were NHL all-stars TJ Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Blake Wheeler, Kyle Okposo, and Eric Johnson. There were a ton of role player NHL guys out there as well. This was also 1-2 years removed from the Sioux having Zach Parise and the Gophers having Phil Kessel. The talent on the ice in the top 3 lines and top 2 defensive pairings that day was staggering and the play showed it.

It's two teams and a single game, but a microcosm of how much the top to bottom talent has deteriorated in the last decade.

BTW, the last name of the Sioux goalie has become pretty famous as well. His twin sisters were pretty special in the recent Olympics.

Of the 64 possible outcomes yesterday (i.e., 6 championship games, so 2^6 possibilities), only 1-in-64 had the potential to knock the Gophers out of the tournament. I'd call it astoundingly bad luck that this 1-in-64 constellation of outcomes is precisely the one that we got, but I suppose the Gophers made their own bed in the final 6-8 games of the season, and it would be a mistake to underestimate that.
Still, it's tempting to further emphasize Minnesota's poor fortune...they only ended up 13th in the pairwise by losing their T-12th tiebreaker with UM-Duluth due to a 0.0001 difference in RPI. That's crazy.
Very odd to read a bracket without Minny or NoDak.

The committee gave Michigan a significant assist. By straight seeding, M-Northeastern should be in Sioux Falls, with the winner scheduled against the nation's best team in my opinion (SCSU may be the best by far). But attendance concerns moved the double-Minnesota match there instead. And for Michigan (assuming they can get past Northeastern), the #1 seeds providing the most favorable matchup were always Notre Dame and Cornell.

Meanwhile, I need to take a second to acknowledge the rousing success of Pearson's first season. He inherited one of the worst teams in the nation and raised them to a 2-seed in less than one year. He brought a similar bump to Michigan Tech when he left Ann Arbor as Berenson's asst (similar in immediacy, though this bump has been bigger). But that immediate bump isn't what interests me most. That's the fact that he had a whole other gear to deploy a couple years later.

The Gophers were put out of their misery over the weekend. A new era is thrust upon Gopher Hockey. Don Lucia steps down after 19 seasons. He won two national titles, and had much success in WCHA and B1G conference play. I believe his tenure will be reflected on favorably as time goes on. It feels like both he and the program have lost some energy recently though.

It will be interesting to see where the search goes. Do they stay provincial and go with someone like Grant Potulny, Scott Bell, or Bob Motzko. Or do they look to someone with a track record of success but no MN hockey market ties like the Denver or Providence coaches.

That ND-MT game was beautiful hockey. I didn't really have a rooting interest, just commenting on the quality of the contest. You have to really feel for Tech, though.
Elsewhere, the #1 overall seed loses to Air Force. By straight seeding, that should have been Michigan's regional, but the M-Northeastern game was moved to Massachusetts given attendance concerns.

I was actually hoping for Cornell to top BU. BU isn't just the hottest team in the country, they also have *by far* the most draft picks. They seem poorly coached, I'll admit that (why else did they squeak into the NCAAs?), but they've clearly found good teamwork in the last 2 months. Perfectly rated by resume, they are severely underrated by talent. If I did hockey brackets and knew SCSU wouldn't make it, I'd have BU winning it all.

So true. But as first impressions go, that one will take longer than 2017-2018 to shake from the national dialogue. The vitriol is real and probably deserved. We are close to the only big universities in the country in college hockey. Which always made us outsiders. But at least we used to integrate and play nice. No one needs me to recount the story but by consolidating as a Big Ten conference (which I supported) we kind of showed the middle finger to the rest of the country by forcing their realignment.
And then to start out with such comprehensive sucking(?)...it's going to take several years like this (likely in quick succession) to overcome that first impression.

Slightly uncomfortable but I'm pulling hard for OSU over Denver today. I'd like to say it's because I'm not petty and think they may be the nation's most fun offense (which is true), but instead it's because I am petty and always root against Denver and NoDak, because I want Michigan to have the all-time championship record to itself.

Michigan with a really soft goal to go up 3-1. The kick plates on these Warchester (I keep forgetting that that's pronounced "Wooster") boards are so inconsistent. That one bounced right off Oettinger's skate into the crease, unopposed.

Huge weekend of hockey for the respectability of the conference to get three teams into the Frozen Four. I would love to see a Michigan - Ohio State final in St Paul. I would be scrambling to chase down tickets for that one.

I will be curious to see what the draw is in two weeks. Its in a hockey location. You have three schools with huge alumni bases nationally + a regional team that gets a decent local following. No Gophers or Sioux, but it should still be one of the more livelier frozen four atmosphere's in quite a while.

Michigan recruiting had slightly fallen off at the end of the Berenson era, and this was one of a few remaining questions about Pearson. But with only several days remaining before the OHD draft, Owen Power commits, which is nice on its own but also gives Michigan 4 of the top 8 prospects (Power, Stranges, Bakanov, Perfetti). These kids tend to have a 10-30% rate of flaking out of their commitments by picking the OHL instead, but still.
Also: great to be finding wings and centers to match the recruiting D talent that had been growing faster.

UW's came out today also.

In addition to the regular conference slate, they have Boston College for 2 at home, at Clarkson for 1, at St. Lawrence for 1, Michigan Tech for 2 at home, North Dakota for 2 away and Denver for 2 at home. Pretty ambitious schedule.

I'm not a big fan of the NCAA regional sites this season.
