I've been looking into doing a podcast about the history of college football. It would be current-season topics and discussion mostly during the football season, but would run all year, focusing on the history in the off-season. Perhaps getting old coaches on to talk, discussing certain seasons, like a 1981 episode or a 1999 Big Ten episode - those would possibly require some of us to contribute on-air.
Is anyone interested in co-hosting or contributing to an episode or two if I get it started?
As with my game, there's not much out there in terms of podcasts about college football history. Football podcasts are about 90% NFL fantasy football, 3% NFL football, and 2% college football. Most of the college football podcasts are by the national writer/talking head, lacking in-depth knowledge of this school or that school. We could provide that better, I think.
You could just call in on the phone or skype or whatever - I tried the podcast software last night, and it picks up audio well. I'd need some time to play with the editing aspects, but it'd be ours, and we could plug this site all we wanted, get permission to tout the archive sites like the one from here or cfreference, etc.
I'd plug my game, once it's up and running. I just think it'd be awesome to get Dick Tomey on (if he's still alive) to talk about the '93 Arizona run defense or talk with one of you about the best Wisconsin team of all time, things like that.
If you'd like to contact me and help me with getting familiar with the editing process by just talking football, let me know here. This could be really exciting.
It's up!

It will take maybe a couple hours to get it up on all platforms, but give it a listen, if this link works at all. ROUGH draft, trailer/introductory episode.
This is my first time ever trying this, and only took about an hour total to create it. Plenty of room to improve - keep in mind. Feedback is essential.
It's 25 min long.

Well, as mama always told me, "Boy, you got a face for radio and a voice for print."
So I don't think I'm much help :57:
I do think it would be cool if there are people here with some aptitude for hosting it.

Oh man. I hope that you actually sound like Cartman, like you do in my mind. Otherwise I will be quite disappointed.

LOL... I'm trying to get my wife to describe it, as I don't hear my own voice often. She's being really nice and saying it's not weird.
I've always hated my voice. To me it has a nasal quality that I can't stand. If I had to describe it, it might be a much deeper Ray Romano.

I meant Fro. Oddly enough I have heard your voice, bwarb, as I accidentally stumbled upon your you tube channel once, while searching out your blog that you've mentioned a few times here.

You were filming a hedgehog or a hermit crab or some such that had gotten loose from its cage.

Ahh yes... One of the many things I've deleted from YouTube lol...

No, sorry.
-
In that case could you please do your best Cartman impersonation on the podcast? Thanks

I've been told that my brother and I both always sound like we just woke up.

It'll be up on itunes and a number of other, less-popular platforms. I plugged this site plenty, so hopefully that'll get us some new traffic here. I want to keep at it - it'll be slow at first, because there's a ton of podcasts out there.
We can record a segment with any of you at any time, so no tricky scheduling conflicts or anything. What's something you'd like to talk about?
-
@OrangeAfroMan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=58) , once you get the cast live, hang it on either twitter or facebook- and make sure the permissions are set to public, and then you can link it here where it can be played right out of the forum.
-
Who has actually listened to it?
Opinions?
Segment ideas?
-
If I can do a 25 minute first-time solo podcast, we can easily make it an hour show with an interview (maybe down the road), but with a debate segment with 2-3 people involved.
Imagine 3 board posters discussing:
Did Crouch deserve the Heisman?
The 2000 BCS rankings
Nebraska going for 2 in 1983.
If the 95 Huskers were the best ever, who is #2?
Was this year's OU defense the worst ever in the playoff/BCS era (for a team with a chance at the title)?
Will Georgia ever win another NC?
I think there's a niche we could fill with historical discussions instead of up-to-the-minute stuff everyone else does.
Discussions we've all had with friends, but not publicly. And if we can get listeners to come to the site to chime in, it will create a traffic jam we'd love to have to deal with, right?
-
your link say's it's still in draft form, and then after a few seconds it forwards you to a custom 404 page. One that is extremely annoying.
by the way, any of y'all ever seen the 404's (and several other) error pages for here?
https://www.cfb51.com/qerglinrqogubq3ui4.html ought to get you to one of them.

I'm listening now!!!
so exciting

I attended an industry conference in Des Moines early this week.
Hawkeye and Big Ten Network legend Chuck Long was a speaker
good stuff, talking about college football. He's a huge fan of the history of college football.
Interesting to me because I'm about Chuck's age and attended a few of the games he played in and talked about.

Well I'd like to have segments like the 'Random Revelations' thread on here, and maybe interview someone directly involved. Same with the all-time greats debates. I think doing the team trio rankings would work well with 2-3 contributors as well. Really, the sky is the limit.

Yeah, it is really tough to picture that voice producing Fro's posts, after reading them all in the Cartman voice all these years.
-
you did a good job on that @OrangeAfroMan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=58) ...
i'll see if i can't get in touch with @CoachQ (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1661) (coach Jan Quarrels) to see if he has any interest in this.. he'd be a good dude to interview!!!
-
Nice. Good for you, OAM. I’d love to join you on an episode someday if we could coordinate our schedules.

Do you think a segment about this site would work? Maybe the backstory and contributors about the move from scout? Or just the ins and outs behind the scenes of hosting a web forum?
Let me know.

If you have a topic you feel comfortable discussing, let me know. Or you could just share your experience with this site.....or we could debate something like a trio or "the best whatever", something like that.
-
And remember guys, we can record anytime and add it to a show at a much later date. If our segment stinks, we can throw it out. A lot of freedom with this format!
-
there isn't a lot to speak of with running the site... it's not exactly glorious stuff. I'd rather focus on it's content and perhaps the crowd... this is up to you, though... I've been pushing for @CoachQ (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1661) to join us here, but he just doesn't like spending time online. i wager he'll be highly interested in a podcast type thing, and in an interview type format...
if you can get that dude going he's a trip- and he knows all kinds of folks in the business of football both pro and college. just some of his tales of running into other coaches recruiting same players are hilarious and gives a great insight to how that works.
-
I'll be seeing some former Husker O-linemen from the glorious early 80's at the Spring game. I doubt they would be willing to do an interview, but I'll ask.

apparently this page doesn't work any longer

What about a preseason round-up? I.e. each year in August you get the main posters for each team from this site for like a 30-minute roundtable on the team's prospects for the year.
I realize you're more interested in the history and some of the other aspects than current, but having it be a true fan perspective on the team is probably more interesting than having it be a journalist's perspective on the team...
-
Yeah, once the season gets closer, having current events/predictions, etc would make perfect sense. I just need people to do this with, maybe get some rapport going...that'd be much better than me rambling.
