Title: NFL and paying players
Post by: 847badgerfan on March 22, 2019, 10:19:22 AM

Ironic it's from the NFL but timely:

OK, first off, kiss my ass, NFL. That said, kiss my ass.

How about this, NFL:

Get rid of your stupid "3 years after high school" rule. Start a minor league while you're at it. Just stay the hell out of college football, and worry about continuing to wreck your own league.

Kiss my ass.

I heard about some BBall minor league starting up where the players can attend college, for "free", as part of their compensation.

I suspect someone will try that with football.  Go to college, practice in the afternoon, play on Saturday, get paid whatever, no other rules.  Don't want to do no schoolin'?  Don't.

always hate these "anonymous" quotes in media. 99.9% of the time they are so obviously made up by the "journalist".

After reading it though, hard to disagree with anything in the fake quote.

I think the current "system" is becoming ever more untenable and in a decade will look very very different.

Egg-zackly!  I didn't get halfway through that without having the same reaction.

This is likely untrue.
Finding someone willing to be a jerk when their name isn't attached ... well that's not the hardest thing out there.

I think that's what MDoT was saying

Obviously 99.9% is a gross exaggeration and hyperbole on my part.
But I really think a lot of that anonymous quote crap is fake. Just reading the quotes like that a lot of times- they clearly read as if they were made up and don't sound anything like how a normal person talks. They read and sound like they were made up. News media these days are despicable. They just put out so much misleading info, half-truths, and outright false BS, that unless someone is willing to put their name behind it- I'm just not buying it- it doesn't even register to me- it's just white noise as far as I'm concerned.

If the NFL felt they could make money off a minor league, they'd have done it.   Right now, they have a free development tool.

yep. they have 0 incentive. they get all the best prospects for their sport, seasoned and developed for 3-5 years, and it doesn't cost them a dime.

I have a dire prediction that inside 15 years, college football as we know it will be a thing of the past.

Or the NFL will have to pony up some coin to Collegiate Programs.Because many/most aren't turning a profit contrary to popular belief.

I've been saying that for 15 years. About 3 years after I started posting "here".

How many of the best collegiate players are serious students?  Should they not be in the minors, or the NFL, now?  Even Calvin Johnson, by all accounts a serious student, went pro in 3.

The minors would pay them some to play and they wouldn't have all that class stuff.

I think CFB will look like college baseball today, with a binary system developing.

Colleges have done a good job using their free labor to make a ton of money. They've done a horrible job keeping their players' well being as an important part of the collegiate experience.  They should have gotten ahead of this, but too many dollar signs in their eyes.

Isn't it the athletic departments making this money?  I realize some donate to the academic parts.  And both are "nonprofit".

Certainly, a lot goes to athletic department. Ohio State has the nicest football facilities in Ohio, a state that has two professional teams. Players' money also goes towards creating six figure jobs for bowl executives, NCAA execs, and many others.
