Title: Which games do you want to see in person this coming season?
Post by: Cincydawg on February 19, 2019, 06:55:39 PM
Some of you may have season tickets, maybe not many.  I'm looking at UGA at Vandy and at Mizzou and at GaTech, since I can walk to that one, and tickets should be pretty cheap.  I have been to the Tech stadium once, in 1971, when the Dawgs won late 28-24.

This used to be a serious game when Tech was good to very good every year.  The two losses to Tech at home in a row might have sealed the fate of a former head coach.

Getting to games is becoming more difficult due to other travel and such, but I think I'd like to see one in Madison this season. Maybe Michigan? We'll probably try to get to Indy for the B1G CCG this year, regardless of who is playing.

I'd really like to get to ATL for the SEC CCG again, but this time maybe get tickets. Last time we did not, but Yao Ming @GopherRock (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=47) scoped us out a great bar to watch it in. I wish I could remember the name of that place. I do know we stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn, in Midtown. Perhaps you've seen it.

I'll be at Maryland, as usual, especially since I'm back in DC (I'll be at the BB game next weekend, too). Maybe Penn State, too, since that's in State College. I might go to Indiana, as well, since my sister is near Indy (likewise for the BTCG if Michigan finally makes it).

For home games, I'll probably try to go to Notre Dame, Sparty, and/or Iowa.

I havent yet scouted the season much, I think we're leaning Kyle Field for either AU or Bama.

N at Purdue seems likely, as does the Big CCG, which Badge we will be safely moved in by then, should we want to get together.

Well, obviously for my situation, seeing games in person isn't exactly easy.

That said, we're planning on a Chicago trip this fall, going to a Friday Cubs game followed by the TCU@Purdue game in September. My wife has never been to Chicago, nor [obviously] to West Lafayette, so it should be fun.

I'm toying with the idea of driving up to Reno for the Purdue@Nevada opener. But that seems a little gratuitous if I'm going to the TCU game, given that it's a 500 mile each way road trip to do it.

There is a new "beer bar" not far from us that is pretty awesome looking, very open, and they have 56 beers on tap or something like that.

https://www.citytap.com/location/atlanta/

I think there are a couple Marriott Residence Inns around here, along with a new AC Hotel and regular Marriotts and a W.  We also have a guest suite in the building that is $120, no tax, per night, but it is occupied at times of course and there is only one.  We stayed there three nights before we closed.

I paid about $300 for one nosebleed ticket for the SEC CG on SH, I hit it when they had a 20% discount somehow.  That was the cheapest seat in the house.  The good news is that hotdogs are only $2 each and other food is also moderately priced as is beer, it floored me, they kept the prices low for the SB also.

It's obviously easy to get tickets to most Tech games outside Clemson and UGA.

We don't usually dine in sports bars, the menus look boring, but we're trying a few around at times for lunch.  Hudson's Grille was decidedly mediocre, but they had a lot of TVs and beers.  There is a Taco Mac that has some mediocre reviews on line, if that is a factor.

I was surprised how loud it was in the stadium, but shouldn't be of course.  The dome was closed and it really retains the noise even of 35,000 fans on each side.

We stayed at the Residence on Peachtree NE - 1365. The bar was a few blocks away to the South and West. They had great food - not bar food at all. Not really a sports bar, per se, but they had the games on. It had a large courtyard in front of it.

I know where the motel is, but not the sports bar, there isn't much up that way really in terms of places to eat.

There is another Residence Inn on 11th Street.  You stayed nearer 17th street, which connects across the freeway to Atlantic Center that has bars and restaurants, but that bridge over the freeway is pretty long.

We live off 13th Street.  Kid #2 is due in today en route to Texas, permanent move.  The kitchen is still UC, dude is up there now, template due Friday for countertops.

I think you are in the LA area, right?  If so, and if you can make a long weekend out of it that is a beautiful drive with Red Rock, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe all along the way.
That game is Labor Day weekend so, assuming neither of you have to work on Labor Day and especially if you could get Friday or Tuesday off you could have a really nice trip there.
I Know what you mean.  I've done 500 mi each way trips to see games on regular (ie, no days off work) weekends and that is pretty crammed but if you already have Monday off and you can get Friday or Tuesday off that would make it a pleasant weekend.  FWIW: I'd suggest trying to get Tuesday off rather than Friday because hotels will be cheaper and things less crowded that way.

We stayed at the Residence on Peachtree
Based on my experience in Atlanta this is not helpful at all because every freaking street is peach-something street.

Yeah, LA... There would be some awesome scenery on that drive, and I'd probably try to stay up there the night after the game, drive back halfway to somewhere in the Sierra Nevada on Sunday to make it more manageable, and then drive the rest on Monday.

The big thing is that the game time isn't set. If I knew it was a night game, I could drive up first thing Saturday morning and still get there in time for the game. If it's a midday or afternoon game, that means I have to drive on Friday. taking a day off work as trying to get out of SoCal after work on Friday of a holiday weekend is brutal. That would probably be the dealbreaker.

The other question of course is if my wife actually wants to go to that one. Two of my three Boilermaker friends locally just moved away, and the third has a 1 year old at home, so I don't know if he's going to be able to get away or wants too. Given that we're going to a game at Purdue two weeks later, I'm not sure my wife would want to invest an entire weekend just to drive to Reno for the game. And since the guys who would make it a "boy's weekend" mostly moved away, and I'm not the type that's just going to drive up there alone, it could depend heavily on whether she's up for it.

I have the same issue with my wife but the major selling points if this were my situation would be Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon.  If your wife isn't interested in those then maybe Reno or Lake Tahoe?

For myself:
Due to yet-to-be-announced developments I will be more limited than in the past so there will be no road-game trips this year.  My brother and I each get to buy two tickets to one conference/premium game and up to four tickets each for the crappy games.  I think we will skip the crappy games and choose between Wisconsin on October 26 and Penn State on November 23.

In theory Penn State will be a bigger game (not necessarily because they will be a better team but because they are a divisional match-up) but I think we are leaning towards Wisconsin because it should be a better weather game.  I'm not sure.

Thanks, we'll check it out, though we don't walk past 8th usually, 6th is obviously not much further.  Menu looks interesting, not typical sports bar grub.

We walk quite a bit, often in the park, or over to Ponce City Market and beyond on the Beltline Trail, which is pretty cool.

There is a good (expensive) butcher shop en route that has some great steaks ($$$).  They also sell growlers which I've yet to sample.

There is a 0.52 mile running track in the park I try and do when weather allows (rain today of course).  I am just back from our gym, which is serviceable and rarely occupied.

My dad, brother, and I did this when we went to Wisconsin.  Camp Randall is almost exactly 500 miles from where we live.  We drove it on Saturday for a Saturday night game and let me tell you, that was a LONG day.
It would probably be easier for you since I imagine that football traffic/parking is a bit easier in Reno than it is in Madison but still, that is a long day.

I will probably attend N. Illinois in Lincoln in September, Northwestern in Early October could be the sharkwater party, and the Wisconsin game in mid November.

I've promised to roadtrip to Minneapolis for the Husker - Gopher game in October.

And I might be coaxed into attending the Hawkeye game in Lincoln.

If any Buckeyes are coming to Lincoln, let me know.... I could show up.

That should be a good one.  The Huskers should have a pretty strong shot at ending the 4-game skid against the Hawks.
Wisconsin's still the measuring stick though.  I have a hunch that's gonna be a doozy this year.

Many folks overlook Northwestern in the west.  the Cats have taken 3 of the last 4 from the Huskers.  3 of the last 4 decided by a TD or less

I always enjoy the contests with the Cats and expect another good game in Lincoln this season.

Hopefully I will attend a game in Evanston soon

Will be at all the Gopher home games.

Looking at the schedule, the only roadie in the bunch that interests me is @Rutgers on October 19. Otherwise, it's Fresno, Purdue, Iowa, and Northwestern.

As for the bar in Atlanta, I haven't a clue which place we ended up. Time and Smirnoff have rendered exact details of the site to the ages. However, that sounds like a possible place.

yup, I really enjoy games in Kinnick.  I've been to my share of cold weather - bad weather games since 1981, but it's tough to get me to move off the warm couch the day after Thanksgiving to sit in the cold after a 4 1/2 hour drive.

guess I'm getting old

Samford University games. Grandson is a walk-on there who played DIII at Beloit College (Wisconsin) in 2017. Transferred to Samford in 2018, but pulled a hamstring in his tryout last season. Normally wouldn't expect him to get much, if any, playing time, but Samford has very little depth at RB. I can see him playing on 3rd and short. If they need two yards, he can get them three.

As for Bama. We spent all of this season's funds at last season's Orange Bowl and CFPNCG.

For me it would be more the cost of the tickets and the hotel room after.I can deal with the cold and the drive. The results are the same the couch with your own facilities are tough to top

the Hawk/Husker battle is usually the 11am game, so a room the night before is best with a 4 1/2 hour drive, but of course that means driving thanksgiving night
and then after the post game party it's nice to have a room for Friday night - Lincoln has a two night minimum, not sure about Iowa City, but room for 2 nights can get expensive
but, Heck, it's only money

Also, I found the place in Nashville where we went on Google Earth (1803 21st Ave S in Nashville). Looks like it's been closed up for a while.
As for coming here for a Sharkwater party on October 12, that would actually be a fantastic time and location for a 2019 Board Meeting. We've got a pretty nice setup for it, that weekend the fall colors are in full bloom, and tickets shouldn't be that hard to get.

I do enjoy taking in a D3 game or three now that OSU plays all of their games at night.
Last year I saw My Union @ Otterbein, which was akin to watching Youngstown St go up against OSU. The Cardinals were getting heckled by their own Women's Basketball team for missing so many tackles, which was pretty funny.

Yeah, it's crazy. In a few weekends we're headed back to Paso for an event, and the hotel we wanted to stay at has a 2-night minimum at >$250/night. Apparently it's the time of year that every winery is doing zinfandel festivals or something. I'd pay it for one night (wife's mom & stepdad will be at that hotel), but we basically can't leave until after work best-case on Friday anyway, so no way. I'd much rather wake up and drive up Saturday morning than try to fight through LA traffic during rush hour just to arrive too late for even dinner. We ended up at a Hampton Inn that'll still cost almost $300/night but at least it's only a one-night minimum.
Then the next weekend we're off to Tempe for a wedding, and all of the hotels are busy and expensive because of spring training (we'll get to see a Cubs game on Friday night though, which is cool). Luckily for that we were gifted a hotel room using points... It would have cost me $400 or 80,000 Hilton points to stay 2 nights in freaking Tempe!
I still don't know what we're going to do for the TCU @ Purdue game in September. I don't even know what the hotel situation is like in West Lafayette.

Since I'm just a bit over an hour north of Omaha, if I'm sober enough to drive to Omaha from Lincoln, I'm simply going home.
Many folks stay on the west side of Omaha, it's only about 40 minutes, but I have trouble finding a sober driver.

Part of spending all offseason planning which games I’ll attend come Fall is the ticket watch process. The big one I’ve been week by week tracking is SC’s home opener against Fresno State. Back in January the cheapest tickets hovered around $80 and now it’s dropped to $51.

80% positive I'll be seeing ASU in East Lansing in September. I'm usually only good for one road game a year so that might be it. Of course I'll be at all but one or two ASU home games.

I will also jump-start my ass in the fall and get out to some of the big high school games on Fridays...I'm mad I haven't yet.

As for coming here for a Sharkwater party on October 12, that would actually be a fantastic time and location for a 2019 Board Meeting. We've got a pretty nice setup for it, that weekend the fall colors are in full bloom, and tickets shouldn't be that hard to get.
I'm locked in for the Gopher - Husker game in Minneapolis.
My room is reserved

I wish Florida and Miami agreed to play every year, even in Orlando.  I think A&M and Arkansas did something like that - a 10-year deal in JerryWorld.

Messaging my Auburn connection, checking in on joining her famous tailgate for an Auburn home game against either Miss St on Sept 28 or Old Miss on Nov 2. Both likely non-showcasers for the SEC those weekends.

Florida is still the only member of the big 3 to not lose to a UCF or USF...

I'm still not sure if UCF really wants a home game vs the Gators....their little 45K stadium would be 2/3-3/4 orange and blue.

They got some big britches for a program that's had 3 winless seasons since I was born.
Let's look at their last 10 games vs P5 teams...any P5 teams.
L - LSU
W - Pitt
W - Auburn
W - Maryland
L - Maryland
L - Michigan
L - South Carolina
L - Stanford
L - NC State
L - Missouri

So that's 3-7.  Cool.  They had a 3-game win streak, but that's over now.  They were battling for 4th in the state of Florida in relevance and still are.  Personally, I'd take South Florida's program over UCF's overall, but the Knights did good by getting an on-campus stadium.  But the fact it's so small tells you everything you need to know.

one of the reasons Frost left

small stadium that they couldn't fill while undefeated

I still think they should play the other 5 Florida schools - tossing in the Bulls

The rest of the country should be pulling for that to happen, as it'd knock down the big 3 a peg.  Ohio State and LSU and those 1-program states are the ones I'm envious of.

if the Big 3 would dominate the Knights and Bulls, perhaps the little two would be knocked down a peg

leaving more for the Big 3

Although Notre Dame’s Sept. 21 visit to Georgia is still four months away, the game is already shaping up as an all-timer from a demand standpoint. No game on the 2019 college football schedule is fetching a higher ticket price on the secondary market than the Fighting Irish’s first-ever trip to Sanford Stadium. The cheapest seats available on VividSeats.com on Tuesday evening ran a cool $407, and that was to sit in the 600 level in the upper reaches of the 92,746-seat stadium.

UGA fans like to travel, perhaps in part because their team has not traveled much in the past.  After a 1965 game in Ann Arbor, they did not venture out of the southeast for 50 years or so except for a few bowl games.  So, it's still a bit novel to see them playing in places like AZ and CA and IN.  And their fan base is pretty large and expectant.  The state's population has grown significantly, it's now larger than Michigan, and while many of the new folks are fans of B1G teams and others prefer soccer, some do adopt the "home team" (Georgia Tech not having been an "option", so to speak.)

So, their away tickets get pricey as well, and home tickets do so for marquis opponents.  I was looking at a couple of tickets at Vandy and the cheapest are nearly $100.  The wife likes Nashville so I mentioned we might go visit in September, ha.  It's unusual to have a conference game on Day One, but they do.

We're headed to Hilton Head for Thanksgiving.  One kid may join us, the other two in the States are considering but have limited PTO.

HH in the off season is pretty nice.  Weather can be spotty of course which probably is why it's the off season.

Clearing out weekends of October 5th for Arizona Vs Colorado in Boulder...Couldn’t clear weekend of Sept 14th for Arizona Vs Texas Tech in Tucson.

Work keeps resetting my schedule and now it looks like my Sept 14 Vs TTech weekend is open, but at the expense of losing my Oct 5 @ Colorado trip to Boulder.
