Title: The most disheartening losses by your team
Post by: Cincydawg on February 12, 2019, 11:44:20 AM
Of late, they have all been to that team to the West of us.  Granted, the Auburn loss on the tipped pass was tough, but that team wasn't in line for an NC.  The loss to Florida in 2003 was crippling, but I've finally moved on.

UGA has had several one loss seasons where the only loss was to Auburn (1942), and Auburn has had several where the only loss was to Georgia.

the kick6 was a kick in the nuts.

but the worst one i can think of as far as excitement before and the heartbreak after was in 05 to lsu. bama was having a dream season after going through the worst stretch in our history. undefeated going into lsu game, 2 top 20 teams going at it, started out strong, going up 10-0 at half, lsu storming back in 3rd to tie game 10-10, and lost 16-13 in ot. lsu had missed several fg's throughout game, and in ot bama, already having scored a fg, held them for a 3rd and long and if they stop lsu there it's another decently long fg for an already shaken kicker. but jamarcus russell found dwayne bowe in the back of endzone for the game winning score.

i remember thinking before the game if we could get past lsu, we'd win west and have a good chance at sec title and maybe a shot at one of the big guys at time (usc/texas) for the title. hindsight being 20/20, win or lose that day, either one of those teams would have slaughtered bama. but we lost, a week later lost @ top 10 au, and limped into the cotton bowl, sneaking out a win vs texas tech.

overall it was a good season. a great one considering where we were 3-4 years before. but it came crashing down at the worst time to the worst opponents.

Not 2011 LSU regular season?

For Gators older than myself, the loss to Georgia in 1985 probably stands out.  Florida was ranked #1, maybe for the first time ever, and they lay an egg in the WLOCP, 24-3.  It would take the Gators 9 more years to get back to #1 (preseason, 1994).

For me...obviously losing @ FSU in '96 was bad.  The Fiesta Bowl vs Nebraska was embarrassing.  The home loss to Auburn in '94 was stupid.
Officially, I'd have to say losing to Tennessee in 2001, in the rescheduled game from 9/11 was the worst - the run defense just didn't show up and that great offense didn't get its shot against Miami.
An off-the-radar game was one I attended in 2000 - Miss State running all over the Gators, winning 47-35ish.  I want to say they had 500+ yards rushing and I also want to say it was Spurrier's only loss to an unranked team while at Florida.  Ugh, that was a shitty drive back to Gainesville.

Not 2011 LSU regular season?
nah, but that sucked too. but 05 was after 3-4 years of sucking hard, and 10-12 more of being let down (sans 99). and all that coaching fiasco. thought there's a real chance we wouldn't ever be back, but that season renewed that dream, and it was crushed. by 2011, i knew we could compete as long as saban was here, and we'd already won with him once.
also playing a large part was i was a student at the time.
wasn't too long before that season that i joined here. wish i could remember some of the barbs thrown that year. was first time i could talk bs and not look stupid doing it, lol.

The oddest Florida loss I've seen was the '99 SECCG vs Bama.  Got blown out by a team that beat us 40-39 in the Swamp earlier that year in a truly great game.

That big loss came out of nowhere on my end, idk if you guys expected it or not.

The "Punt, Bama, Punt!" game from way back has to be an SEC classic.

1976 Rose bowl. After dominating UCLA earlier in the season and running through the season. Only to have corny greene have a terrible game and a national championship goes to the way side

There are some that are so bad, for almost random reasons, that I just don't even count them.  The kick 6, if I was a Bama fan, I wouldn't even acknowledge it.

For Florida, that game was deemed "The Swindle in the Swamp" - from the opening kickoff, the refs got call after call wrong - this was before replay.  It was so bad, so one-sided, it'd be comical if it didn't cost Florida the game.

So I don't even count it.

the iron bowl creates some amazing losses for bama. it's ridiculous some of the incredibly improbable losses bama has taken in the series.

the camback - bama up 24-0, i think, and driving for another score when ingram fumbles the ball on about the 20, he was about a yd away from sideline when he fumbled and it tumbled 20+ yards down sideline and out of endzone. never seen anything like it before or since. couple other things bounce au way too, but that fumble was the defining moment of that game.

punt bama punt - bama up 16-3 late in 4th, au forces a punt and blocks kick for a scoop and score. couple minutes later repeats the feat.

kick-6 - we all saw it.

bama has some memorable games (315, wrong way bo to name a couple), but none as dramatic as those au wins.
