Well, he had the 3rd ranked recruiting class last year, after a 7-6 season.  But, it did include a bowl victory over SECSECSEC so perhaps that's the key.

Anyway, I don't worry too much about recruiting ranking.  I supposed I'd rather have highly regarded recruits than not, but none of it really matters until they're successful on the field.

My point was not to say a highly ranked recruiting class means a great season

It was simply to point out that TH seems to be earning his salary so far

To have a 3rd ranked recruiting class 2 years in a row is a very good accomplishment

Youre right that what matters more is just what we do with these recruits

so far TH seems to know the right things to do

Texas got good enough. Recruiting rankings do matter, but only within the wider context. Texas not only got highly rated players, they got them at spots that cover needs both now and future. They got the type of players that seem to fit their mindset and planned scheme.

I'm with 320.

Considering we play both OU and LSU we will have our work cut out for us

I think to have a 10 win season we have to win at least one of those games

We will win both.

Horns won 10 games last year even with embarrassing and inexcusable losses to Maryland and Oklahoma State.  They can certainly do it again this year.

Any time I replace that many members of my OL, I have to pause. They were seasoned veterans who knew their stuff, but no one was a generational talent.

I believe in Herb Hand. I also believe that we have talent in the fold, and won't have to hope that some true freshman catches on - as we have in seasons past. However, an OL is more than the sum of its parts, which can be good or bad. A collection of journeymen playing as one unit will outperform All-Americans who freelance.

I'm not as concerned about replacing 8 starters on defense. Orlando's defense is situational, and many of next season's "starters" already have seen the field. There's more than enough athleticism to direct to the field. I have to see an OL beat on by a hostile defense, though, before assessing its aptitude.

The biggest concern I have is just how good is our backup QB

I just hope we still have a chance if our starting QB is injured

which is far from a remote possibility

Sam has graduated from child to man.  Sam is bricks.  Nobody hurting him.

It's rare to go wire to wire with one QB.

That said, nobody is going to have a QB room full of seasoned backups any more. The kids put in too much time and money into developing in Jr. Hi and High school to sit on the bench and graduate. If you're any good, you're transferring out when it's apparent the job is filled for the next 3 years. I'm not sure I blame the kid either.

Frankly, Texas may have one of the better positions, having already redshirted one QB three seasons behind a multi-year starter.

320 makes a good point.   If Sam were to get injured, who replaces him?     No one with any playing time under their belt at all.    I don't want to think about it.
