Title: 9/23 Super Typhoon of Consciousness
Post by: MaximumSam on September 23, 2017, 06:54:23 AM
Much better slate today.  I have to go out to the middle of nowhere for my oldest daughter's Away soccer game this morning.  Then I have to find a bar with the BTN to watch the Buckeyes.  Blech.

Volleyball DH for the girls today.   2 hour gap between matches for lunch, then we have to go pick up the cuts and grind from the cattle we bought with a few other families.   Always fun to drive around with 70+ lbs of beef in the trunk.

Yes, so we are meeting up with the family at the butcher right out of town where we divvy up the cuts.  They are all cryovacced, weighed, labeled and frozen.

Awwww, Sugar Snaps!
Microsoft and ESPN exclusive contract must have just ended. I've got game day on my PlayStation 4.

Not that the I like 90% of Game Day, but still my main media device is able to watch the one piece of media I've actually wanted for the last 4+ years.

I will say Hi to Mike

I'm going to the lake today myself, will miss some football

the Iowa great lake of West Okoboji - friend has a cabin there, helping him lift the boat and winterize the cabin

will watch the Huskers at Miles Inn there, then aged steaks, scotch and cigars on his deck on the lake

heading to a tailgate and the Viking's game in Minne tomorrow morning

Man, I was driving behind a semi once, and water was splashing up on my car from it's tires.

I was in the middle of the desert, and there wasn't any moisture on the road, so I decided to pass the truck.

Once I got to the side, I figured out what was happening.

It was chock full of cows, two levels worth, so they were all just peeing as the truck was driving through it.

Well, if this were one of the cupcakes everyone else played in weeks one and/ or 2 and/ or 3 he would be a Heisman candidate.
It helps to play your cupcakes early- just look at the rankings.

When did the fighting Beilma's start wearing Ohio State colors?
I always thought Belima had a secret hard on the Buckeyes while at Wisconsin; guess in his last year in the SEC he wanted to dress his team up as OSU...

Except you can't deny he made some beautiful throws today.
Most coaches let their new offense develop some confidence against the early season cupcakes...that's all Meyer is doing.  The only difference is the Buckeyes did not have any cupcakes until now.  If he was intereste in padding stats he wouldn't pull Barrett with 8 minutes left in the first half.

hmmm maybe FSU was really overrated to begin the year? The defense is really talented and always was going to be good, but that OL was bad last year and it doesn't look any better this year. Dalvin Cook was special- he literally accounted for like 68% of all offensive production for FSU last year and made something out of nothing routinely and made that OL look a lot better than it was. No way they were going to just replace that- especially with a bad OL. Once they lost Francois it was all she wrote.

Yes, overrated even before Francois went down. The hole the Seminoles are trying to right now climb from Vs NC State has less to do with missing the Francois and more to do with the defense not rising to the challenge; with the offense losing Cook and the OL not expected to be improved the loaded D was the reason for preseason #2. The true frosh QB Blackman is passing quite well - 17/25 192yds.

NCSU was my most under rated pick.  They outplayed USCe and wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory.  I thought they had a good shot in this one (which isn't over, but FSU looks out of kilter).

NCSU playing pretty well on D.

NC State ices FSU
NC State finally lassos a win vs a Helmet school that'd eluded them under Doeren. The Wolfpack outplayed the Noles in the trenches. Notably the FSU DL seemed to let up just about every time it looked like they'd gained the momentum from NC St, and the OL play was inexcusably bad, especially on the Right Side where #70 & #76 were blown by all day.
Though under Jimbo the Noles tend to play better as the season moves along, things won't get  any easier with ranked Miami, Louisville, Clemson, and Florida still left.

Some strange officiating today.  OkSU calls time out but the play continue, late hit on the QB called, despite the time out, and the penalty is still enforced.

An A&M player didn't step out of bounds but it was called out of bounds costing them 7, they got 3.

They should have done that last week. The worst part is that teams are stacking the box and I hear some blaming the running game. There's no run game because these teams no that Speight is no threat.
Agree 100%.
Run game has been pretty decent considering the box is stacked all game every game bc teams know Speight can't throw the ball.

Because McCray overran the play and had the guy not got twisted by his own feet he would have had a first down

Not even decisions- more accuracy. Speight has ZERO accuracy. Only thing he can throw well is the deep ball. And his arm is so weak it takes forever and a day to get there. Many times his WR's have had to stop and wait for the ball when they are wide open deep.

Chris Evans is a year away of physical development of being a special back. He's still too slight, goes down on first contact too easily. He needs more muscle on that lower body to drive through arm tackles and gain extra yards.

It's better decisions too. Speight has no feel for the position, no sense of timing or rhythm. O'korn looks comfortable and Speight always looks like he's trying not to make a mistake. It's only 1 drive, but that was encouraging

Michigan offensive play calling certainly helping that cause. Why they wait til they end of the half to spread Purdue out and throw on first down and take a shot down the field to DPJ is beyond me. They NEED to throw on 1st down and they NEED to get DPJ the ball. He is by far their most talented, explosive offensive weapon. O'Korn throws that ball deeper it's 6. DPJ had his guy beat.

Speight doesn't make that throw. The anticipation, accuracy, and ball placement- Speight doesn't have any of that. Threw it early, on target and placed it where Gentry could have a chance to grab and only Gentry. That was the best throw I've seen from a Michigan QB in 2 years.

Good game for 3 quarters.  Purdue just isn't there yet.  The offense needs some fine tuning, and more of Brohms recruits to get going.  The Michigan front 7 was too much.  I'm a bit surprised Purdue didn't try to establish a run, but I doubt it would change the outcome.

Both those targeting calls were complete bullshit.  They wouldn't change the outcome of the game, but the score wouldn't have been as bad.  On the first, Thieneman clearly lead with his shoulder, and the Michigan WR ducked into the hit.  There is absolutely nothing he could do.  It was not intentional, and not targeting.  The second was even worse.  Bentley clearly pulled up and tried to disengage.  The contact was made with his forearms.  What a load of shit.  We now lose 2 starters.  UM doesn't get a walk in score up the middle with Bentley in.  The rule needs to go.  Referees should not have that much influence on a game.

This is a complete disaster.

Pick six.  Careless fumble at our own 15.  Fumble inside the 1 yard line going in.

21 points right there, easy.

Scott's second fumble inside the 1 this year.

I wouldn't go that far.  I'd say ND isn't as much better as the score would indicate, but I wouldn't say we are equal, let alone better.  The turnovers and penalties aren't fluky, they are a pattern, and it's part of this teams makeup.  The fact that we've given up 4 non offensive TDs in 2.5 games is no longer fluky.

Yeah I had been told he had no accuracy.  He is dropping passes exactly where he wants them.  I was worried about Irish WRs running free.  They really aren't.  But Wimbush hasn't missed a guy yet.

Um what? I don't see that. I see two bad defenses and one team with athletes galore on offense (ND) and the other without them. Lewerke is definitely talented but he's as deadly to his own team as he is the other, and LJ Scott is a supremely talented RB with a history of coughing up the ball.
I do think ND is a little better, not 30 points better though.

Another nice band of tense games coming together at once tonight.    UK collapse was quite sorry to watch.  That holding call was so UK.   SDSU held off lightning, the lightning bolt helmet,  cold hard rain and beat AFA in the end.  Maybe 1,000 people made it to the end.

Indeed.  The noon games were awful.  The theme of the 3:30 games were possible upsets that turned lopsided in favor of the favorite in a hurry (UM, Clemson, Miami).  But there was a nice chunk of games all wrapping up around the same time there around 11:15 that were nice, and MSU did their part by making me available to be flipping around.

I'll always think he's a pretty decent coach.
But pretty decent isn't building complete teams right now, and in that division, you need a complete team and some close games to turn your way. He's lacked the second one too.

Hmmmm, closer, but not ensure.

So the Knights lose two games because of weather. Which might not mean anything, but you lose a probable FCS win and probable loss to Ga. Tech. But in either case, it'll be harder to post a win total that'll grab eyes. That's fine if he can keep the losses down, but that'll be tricky.

They get Memphis this week, and the Tigers look like they can put up points. Cincinnati is probably a win, but maybe not. At Navy is a pain. At SMU could be tricky. Temple should be a win, USF appears to have a defense that will cut out your liver to sell it. Finish 6-2 or better for 8-2 or better total and it's an easier sell in Lincoln. Go 7-3 and it's kinda hit or miss. But take losses to Navy/UCF/Memphis plus trip up at Cincinnati or SMU and its real dicy.

It's dumb football can come down to such things. #AACBoard

Interesting.
18 points with 10 minutes left. Bearcats followed with a 4-minute drive for an 8-point TD, then kicked off deep down 10 with 6 minutes left, so that staff felt it was over, or was too conservative for its own good.
Navy also averaged 8.3 yards a play, so at least they were beating on Cincy's defense (the Bearcats did pretty solid on offense, which seems like a good sign).
