Title: Powder Rankings Week 3
Post by: MaximumSam on September 17, 2017, 08:56:35 AM
1. Penn State: Beat Georgia State 56-0, up next at Iowa.  Gets a little side eye after seeing Okie State demolish Pitt, but still look to be most complete team.  Really interesting game with Iowa coming up, as last year Penn State whooped 'em and started having the look of a really good team.

2. Wisconsin: Went to BYU and won 40-6, now gets a bye.  I'll bump them up a step for going on the road and looking pretty dominant.

3. Michigan: Beat Air Force 29-13, up next at Purdue.  Now 7 straight games of pretty uninspiring offense.  Defense may get first real test going on the road against a Purdue squad that wants to throw it around.

4. Ohio State: Beat Army 38-7., up next UNLV.  Trying to sort out their offense, but not sure they will commit to what they need to do.  They are a team that runs the ball.  Runs, screens, RPOs are all in their wheelhouse.  Having JT drop back and scan the field just isn't.

5. Michigan State: Had a bye, then welcomes in Notre Dame.  ND is a bit of a cipher, but should see where MSU's defense really is this week.

6. Iowa: Beat North Texas 31-14, up next they welcome Penn State.  Good ole Iowa being Iowa.  After three weeks of competent football, they play a good team and we can see what they are.

7. Maryland: Had a bye, welcomes in UCF.  Texas win suddenly not too shabby.  Not sure we will learn much next week though.

8. Minnesota: Beat Middle Tennessee 34-3.  Another solid week, but hard to say where they are until they get into B1G play.

9. Purdue: Beat Mizzou 35-3, next week welcome in Michigan.  Looks like a competent team. Welcome back to football Purdue.  Now try to block Michigan.

10. Indiana: Game cancelled against FIU, next up Georgia Southern.  Not much to say as their game was cancelled.  Probably not much to say about next week either.

11. Northwestern: Beat Bowling Green 49-7, now for a bye.  Always a difficult team to rank, as I'm sure they will give everyone all they want.  But still thinking about how they didn't give Duke all that much.

12. Nebraska: Lost to Northern Illinois 21-17, next up Rutgers.  Blech.  Rutgers game may show if Nebraska is truly a bottom feeder.

13. Rutgers: Beat Morgan State 65-0, now goes to Nebraska.  Two teams that have already lost to MAC opponents square off.

14. Illinois: Lost to South Florida 47-23, now off a week to think about what they've done.  Ersh.  Not many signs of hope here.

1.  PSU
Agree they are most complete team.

2.  Wisc
BYU may not ba any good this year, but I have seen enough to bump Wisc to#2

3.  OSU
This ranking is based more on potential than actual performance so far

4. MD
Agree that victory over Tex looks more impressive now.

5.  Purdue
Complete domination of Missouri

6.  Minn
2 blowout wins in a row

7.  Mich
Looking solid but not great

8.  Iowa
Escaped against Iowa St and struggled against North Texas

9. Indy
At least they beat Va

10.  MSU
Not sold on MSU yet

11.  Neb
12. NW
13. ILL
14. Rut

Why is Michigan so far down in the eyes of some?

1. Michigan - Still by default with the Florida win looking better. Defense is still strong and special teams are improving. Offense is still frustrating. Air Force should contend in the MWC, though they have San Diego State next...
2. Wisconsin - Finally started a game strong, but is BYU any good?
3. Penn State - Pittsburgh win looks weak while Akron and GSU are both awful so I remain skeptical.
4. Ohio State - It's hard to learn too much against option teams.
5. Maryland - UCF has had two weeks off, so this should be an interesting game.
6. Purdue - Missouri is bad, but they're good enough to beat Michigan and probably everyone else on their schedule to be the darkhorse contender.
7. Iowa - I heard their RBs got hurt against North Texas but apparently not seriously.
8. Minnesota - I guess that Buffalo game was a fluke, considering MTSU had beaten Syracuse.
9. Michigan State - Still not sure they're any good.
10. Indiana - Glad they were able to get a replacement game for FIU.
11. Northwestern - At least they dominated Bowling Green. I wouldn't be surprised if they went 6-3 or 1-8 in the Big Ten...
12. Illinois - Having beaten WKU and Ball State gets them here by default. They looked better than I expected against South Florida, too.
13. Nebraska - NIU may very well be decent this year, but it goes to show that the Arkansas State game wasn't a fluke.
14. Rutgers - At least they didn't struggle with a MEAC team this year. Will they even be competitive with anyone besides Illinois?

Minnesota and Purdue seem to be getting their sea legs beneath them. I never guessed Purdue would make so much improvement in a few weeks. Missouri is probably not great, but Purdue delivered a pounding.

Coaching matters, and to me, Purdue made the best or second best hire of the offseason. California's hire is right there with Purdue's.

Yeah, I don't have a problem putting Michigan #1.  But all yesterday showed was how not good Florida was.
Tennessee should have lost to Georgia Tech, and their defense was shredded by them.  They mostly shut down the Gators, who only won because Tennessee doesn't have a kicker and can't defend a hail Mary.  I thought FAR more of Florida before yesterday.
Hell, I'm not sure Air Force isn't Michigan's best win.

What kind of odds could you get right now on Wisconsin to Indianapolis?

I'm not sure Vegas would put another West team in the top 50, let alone top 30.  And Wisconsin looks like a top 10 team.

Yeah, I'm puzzled how anyone could see Michigan as the top team in the conference right now over Penn State. M has great defense and an absolutely terrible offense. Need balance to be #1 in any conference.

Actually, they started REALLY strong against FAU last week before they went into cruise control mode. They made it to 14 points in the first 9 minutes.

PSU has played THEE weakest schedule of any B1G team, and their previous 2 victories, Akron and Pitt, lost their games this weekend by a combined 100-35.

PSU, UW and UM have all played nobody, and most of the conference would be undefeated against any of their schedules.
But we viewed them as 3 of the clear top 4 preseason, and they haven't lost so it is what it is.
OSU lost a game against a team FAR better than anyone any of those teams have played, and one I would pick to beat any of them, but it's college football and a loss is a loss so they are behind them.

I had PSU at #2 to start the season and when OSU lost I moved PSU up to #1. they haven't done anything other than what they are supposed to do, which is dominate on both sides of the ball.
Title: Re: Powder Rankings Week 3

You can make pretty good arguments for any team in the top 4.  PSU won the conference last year and has yet to be challenged this year.  Michigan has the best defense.  Wiscy appears to be a more dangerous team on offense yet still plays strong defense.  And who bets against Urban Meyer?

I was big on PSU coming into the season, and OSU looking deficient on offense and defense against Oklahoma made me drop them.  If they had been competitive and lost a great game I wouldn't have been as dour on them.  Michigan plays great defense, but their offense just isn't very good.  Last year, they mashed a bunch of teams, but they don't appear nearly as dominant (and they lost three games last year).  Wisconsin and PSU haven't really played anybody, so who knows?

1.  Wisconsin (3)- Looked absolutely incredible last week on all sides of the ball.  18 for 19 on pass attempts, which blows my mind.
2.  Penn State (1)- Win against Pitt doesn't look as good as it once did.  Still haven't played anyone of note.  Although they are blowing out teams, the O-Line, D-Line, and linebackers have looked average.  However, outside of those positions they may be the best in the B1G in every other area on the field.
3.  Ohio State (4)- JT Barrett and the Offense are still playing well, hard to know if they solved their pass D problems when they faced Army this week...
4.  Michigan (2) - 1 touchdown in 20 trips to the red zone?  Did I hear that right?  Yikes.  We knew the passing game was really weak, but the entire offense may be worse than I thought.   One or two plays swing Air Force's way, and they very well could have lost last week.  Weird to say this, but I'll move them back up if they can beat Purdue next week...
5.  Maryland (5) (Numbers 5-8 are so close, it's hard to pick...)
6.  Michigan State (6)
7.  Minnesota (7)
8.  Iowa (8)
9.  Purdue (10)
10.  Northwestern (12) - I'll hold out hope that Duke is actually really good, and move NW up a bit
11.  Nebraska (9)
12.  Indiana (11) - I get the feeling I've got these guys super underrated...
13.  Illinois (13)
14.  Rutgers (14) - A MEAC school?  was this a make up game or something?

It's semantics at this juncture in the season but I think Florida is being a little under-weighted in their strength. Massey is as good of a computer poll as you get. Granted, we have 3 games under our belts, but it has Florida #14.

Massey also really likes the B1G right now, with 4 in the Top 10, and Iowa and MN hovering in the 20's. For some reason Purdue is way down the list. I would guess that is largely due to just how terrible Mizzou is this year. Mizzou is ranked almost universally lower than Rutgers right now.

Michigan seems to have a more than competent running game. Its the passing game that's the obvious mess. You know what you got with O'Korn (which isnt much). I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a series or two of Peters to test the waters.

I'm not sure how much "more than competent" Michigan's running game is right now.  Both the Wolverines and Buckeyes have MAJOR issues in the passing game but as of right now I'm a lot more confident in Ohio State's running game.  (FWIW: I think Michigan's D looks better so that doesn't necessarily mean that I think Ohio State is better right now).
Michigan Running:
Ohio State's Running:

The 4.4 avg against Florida might be ok except that Tennessee managed to average 5.5 against the Gators.

The 5.2 against Cincinnati is somewhat alarming though it is better than Cincy's other two opponents (Miami, 2.2 and Austin Peay, 3.7).

There is a lot of football to be played and Michigan is still undefeated so they have time to figure it out but as I see it right now they have a really good defense and an offense that is barely competent at anything.  Their rushing is mediocre and their passing is abysmal.  That makes their offense, in my view, worse than Ohio State's because at least Ohio State is good at something (rushing).  To be fair, Ohio State is possibly worse at passing and probably worse at defense.  If they played tomorrow I think the first one to 10 points wins.

You could easily interchange PSU, Wisconsin and Michigan, in my opinion, at the top spot and I'd have no issues.  And let's be honest, Ohio State's certainly still not that far behind if at all.

Michigan's win against Florida is on par with Penn State's with Pitt.  I know I'll get crucified for saying that, but Florida's simply not that good and would get smoked as well by Okie St.  I'll agree that Michigan's best win right now is Air Force.

Wisconsin and PSU have done what they needed to do, beat bad opponents.  PSU looks the most complete, but if you dig a bit you'll find some real flaws right now.  The OL is not playing well, the DL is getting pushed around at times and hasn't looked good against the run (hint-hint, Iowa and Michigan fans).  Penn State on Sept 18th is not the same Penn State as January 2 last year, yet.

Man it's just so head scratching to see the conference falling flat on its face at this point (damn near EVERY team has to some extent including the 'top three') in the non-con.

Last week in parenthesis

1. PENN STATE (1) - Pitt win doesn't look so good anymore, close to dropping them to #2
2. WISCONSIN (2) - not their fault it isn't vintage BYU
3. MICHIGAN (3) - not their fault it isn't vintage Florida
4. OHIO STATE (4) - pretty sure they'd be every bit as 3-0 as the top 3 if they had played any of their schedules
5. MARYLAND (6) - Texas may be alright
6. MINNESOTA (8) - Buffalo blip aside, Fleck has his team manhandling the teams they should
7. INDIANA (7) - glad they got a should win to replace the cancelled should win
8. IOWA (5) - couple of nailbiters again bottom feeders, and I think we all overrated Wyoming
9. MICHIGAN STATE (9) - we'll see on Saturday how ill timed that bye week was
10. PURDUE (11) - Missouri is a mess, but that's what solid teams do against messes
11. NORTHWESTERN (12) - nice bounceback week
12. NEBRASKA (10) - was nice knowin' ya Mike
13. ILLINOIS (13) - they were who we thought they were
14. RUTGERS (14) - I should drop Rutgers farther for even scheduling a MEAC team

You had me with everything, BUT, comparing Pitt to Florida. Pitt has two blowout losses on their schedule right now to very good Power 5 teams. They had to squeak to OT to beat an FCS school in week 1. They have shown zero redeeming qualities and nearly all computers have them 20-40 spots below Florida. Florida wont win pretty this year, but they are way more of a legitimate team than some are giving them credit for.

Because 1-AA doesn't have bowl games.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebration_Bowl
The Celebration Bowl is a post-season college football (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football) bowl game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_game) that began play in the 2015 season (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_NCAA_Division_I_FCS_football_season). The game is contested between the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Eastern_Athletic_Conference) (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_Athletic_Conference) (SWAC) — the two prominent conferences of historically black colleges and universities (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historically_black_colleges_and_universities) (HBCUs) in NCAA Division I (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I). It serves as a de facto national championship of Black college football (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_college_football_national_championship) and is the only active bowl game to feature teams from the Football Championship Subdivision (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_Football_Championship) (FCS). Starting with the December 2017 game, it is played at Atlanta (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta)'s Mercedes-Benz Stadium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_Stadium); the first two games were played at the Georgia Dome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Dome).
