Title: osu crossed the 900 mark in ap poll appearances
Post by: rolltidefan on November 29, 2018, 06:35:20 PM
this week they are at 900 ap poll appearances, the only team to do so.

they also crossed the 900 mark in total wins this season. texas and alabama also crossed that mark this season.

alabama took over #1 in most ap poll #1 appearances from osu this season.

We have discussed this on here before but it is interesting to me how consistent Ohio State has been over the 80+ years of AP polls.

Ohio State is no longer first in appearances at #1 (second behind Bama).

Ohio State is third in top-5 appearances behind #1 Oklahoma and #2 Bama.

Ohio State is first in top-10 appearances and overall poll appearances.

Alabama passed Ohio State for #1 in appearances at #1 earlier this season.  Alabama has now been #1 in 117 out of 1,149 AP Polls ever released.  That is a little over 10%.  Think about that.  If you picked up a random AP Poll there is a better than one-in-ten chance that Alabama is #1.

Since Nick Saban took over at Alabama here are the appearances at #1(Apperances, Team, % of polls out of 193 from 2007-2018):

Since Saban has been at Bama the Tide have been #1 in nearly half of the polls released.  Saban's 86 appearances at #1 would be #6 on the all-time list for schools since 1936 behind only Bama, tOSU, OU, ND, and USC.

Total appearances at #1 (out of 1,149 AP polls from 1936 through the November 25, 2018 poll):
No appearances for current B1G members Rutgers (#7 highest), Indiana (#4 highest), and Illinois (#2 highest).

Just looking at the top school in each category, if you picked up a random AP Poll there is:

Wow.  Bama 44.6% of the time at #1 since Saban took over.

Has any coach ever approached that figure?

FSU under Bowden had an amazing run of top 5 finishes, but not at #1.  It's obviously far easier to finish top 5 than at the very top.

Georgia had a fair number of top 5 finishes under Richt, but zero #1s obviously, and CMR was fired.

Just looking at the top school in each category, if you picked up a random AP Poll there is:
  • A better than one-in-ten chance that Bama is #1
  • A better than one-in-three chance that Oklahoma is in the top-5
  • A better than 50/50 chance that Ohio State is in the top-10
  • A nearly four-in-five chance that Ohio State is ranked

bama is tops in both #1 and #2 rankings, with about a 10% chance in each. so there's a 1/5 chance bama is in the bcs title game 20% of the time.
what's funny is i used to boast about not being overrated cause we weren't high on the #1 list, but we were when it counted, with the most #1 finishes all time.
saban makes up just under 75% of bama's #1 rankings.

It is actually even more impressive than that because the Tide were not very good in Saban's first year, 2007.  From 2008 through the most recent Poll Saban's Tide have been #1 in the same 86 polls but now it is out of just 177 so that is good for 48.6%.
The gap over #2 is astounding.  From 2007-2018 Ohio State is second with 17 appearances at #1 but note that the Buckeyes trail the Tide by 69 appearances.  #2 Ohio State is literally closer to last than they are to #1 Bama.  From 2008-2018 Florida is second with 15 appearances at #1 but note that the Gators trail the Tide by 71 appearances.  #2 Florida is literally closer to last than they are to #1 Bama.

For all of Bama's history, when Saban took over the Tide were only 10th on the list of all-time appearances at #1 with 31.  Then, see above, Saban's tide were never ranked #1 in his first year, 2007.  So from 1936-2007 the Tide were only ranked #1 31 times.  That was 10th behind:
