Title: I see a Turkey on the Horizon SOC 11/17/18
Post by: MaximumSam on November 17, 2018, 07:17:59 AM
Had our first snow this week, a pleasant mix of freezing rain that turned into rain that turned into snow.  But that's gone and will hopefully be dry and reasonably not cold today.  I'm on driver duty - my daughter is supposed to go to a bat mitzvah.  What does one bring to a bat mitzvah?  How long do they last?  These are things I probably should have thought about before this morning.

Ironic, you put Turkey in the thread title.

I thought you might call this chickenshit Saturday, like they did on ESPNU radio, in honor of those conferences that scheduled cupcakes today.

Finally, cool weather here in Florida.  Feels great. I was in Michigan visiting family last week and it felt so nice. I can only take the heat and humidity so long.

Same-same,those infernal regions seem ablaze sometimes - for long stretches too.Much rather throw another layer on and stick to removing snow, raking leaves and the occasional Blizzard

It really is the worst.  It's like having a preseason game in the middle of the playoffs

5 am here. Within an hour, we should be in the car. Hopefully before 2 pm, we'll be drinking wine in the Dry Creek Valley region of Sonoma.

Dinner plans, you ask? Drinking Pliny the Elder at Russian River Brewing Co.

We had our first night below freezing.  It had been raining and raining, but the rain usually clears out when it gets cold, sometimes with a flake or three.

It's beautiful here today.  I was musing about going to the game, tickets on SH are $50, which indicates they are playing UMass et al.

Smart says he's running out of players on the OL, which is true in effect.  Not good going into the post season unless some get healthy.

The team is starting to look better even against decent competition.  They still can't score from the one.

Greetings from soggy Bermuda. For 6 days at sea, no rain at all. Get to a destination? Rain. Heading out of here late today, for Miami. Been a very interesting trip for sure.

small crowd, maybe 3 or 4.  Could be just me, no commitments yet

cool and windy here, similar to Lincoln.  Could limit the passing game

Probably not. With the Jetstream going west->east, the "Camp" fire up in the Sacramento area will be considerably east of us. That said, we'll be headed that direction Monday to go up to Oregon, so we might see it then.

Always give cash (check or gift card) in $18 increments.    The duration?  That can vary, depending if you're attending the Service and the party, or just the party.

My high school (where I played football once upon a time) finally won the Div 1 (largest class) Wis. State title last night, which is cool.   The really interesting thing is that they run the Wing-T offense (avg. over 300yds p/g).  They passed the ball 3 times, one of which was an INT.  No wonder they are ranked #120 nationally in MaxPreps. :).    They upset the Kimberly Papermakers which had won 5 straight state titles.

As a power run aficionado, I had to take a look at this and found the longform highlights. Notable they didn't just go up and sit on the ball. Lots of trading scores, certainly worth the price of admission.
Also, looks like that offense got some big runs off good WR blocks and bad safety play. Always important and underrated

Perfectly defended, except one player. But his job, which was easy, was the most important one.

Arnette is simply supposed to step up field, sealing the edge and spilling the RB back into the traffic.

Maryland player should’ve threw it away or fallen down to live another day. Instead he drops the ball trying to make a play and OSU gets it back.

Yes, can’t blame that on just one player. Two lineman pushed aside and giving up gap integrity and leaving the safety to miss a hard tackle because gap was so big.

Weird to see them play that bad.

Not at all.  The other problem is that while White missed the tackle, he did slow him up long enough that other players should have been flowing to the ball.  But they weren't.

Clearly a fumble, but how they interpret recovery is interesting.  MSU got the ball, but they weren't checking for it, and the replay doesn't show a clear recovery.

Ohio St got away with a huge false start on Haskins 1st down scramble.

Prince jumped into his stance like a full second before the snap. Have no idea how the refs missed that.

True. As a safety, as you come up for that tackle, your technique is to keep your outside shoulder outside the RBs, so tha his only cut is back toward traffic.  White did not due that.

Yes, especially Prince.  Come to find out, he is actually moving when the ball is supposed to be snapped. The center, Jordan, who will play on Sundays as a guard, has struggled all year to snap the ball on time and also accurately.  This is his first year at center, started as a freshmen and sophomore at guard.

Sometimes I look at the defenders and wonder what on earth they are thinking.  There, they had the play defended, and then the safety jumped out of the hole, into a blocker, and gave up 40 yards.

That's what occurred to me, watching the highlight.  I'd tell the player - your position name is SAFETY.  You're the last line of defense.  You can't be diving at ankles, at worst, hold the guy up until the cavalry arrives.

Their schedule is terrible. A loss to the citadel will have been one of the worst losses in recent memory. Maybe the worst.
Only Mississippi State and LSU are currently ranked and LSU is over-ranked and I’m not sure Miss State should even be ranked. Im pretty sure they won’t finish the regular season ranked.

This is what I was worried about.  A disciplined team isn't focused much on motion and formation.  An undisciplined team is running all over the field in the wrong direction, and OSU is nothing but undisciplined on defense.

I put that INT on the coaches.  They do not go down the field enough to earn those types of plays, which is why they have been less and less successful as the year as gone on.  You have to attack own the field, and OSU has given up on that mostly

1 - Is the OSU Borland related to the Wisconsin Borland from 5-6 years ago?
2 - Does Meyer have an STD?  He keeps picking at his dick every time he's on camera.
He is an STD

I am hoping this loss is a blessing in disguise where Dantonio finally parts with drinking buddies who are holding his program back.
I doubt it, Don Treadwell will just leave his advisor role and come back as OC.

Thought you knew something about football.
The WR should have slid with the QB. Freshman mistake.
Well, they had a chance, and those 2 couldn't seal it.
F*** Haskins.
Good game though.

Meantime, while this is certainly not your vintage OSU team, that sure was an entertaining game.  Also, 7 th consecutive years of a 10 win season.
That’s not easy in today’ s power 5 conferences.

No. Tuf is from Illinois and his father played for Wisconsin. That's the shitty part.

The good part is that Chris Borland, from Ohio, was passed over by OSU and fell to Wisconsin. I like it when that happens.

Just take solace in the fact that you escaped with a win vs a team going through turmoil, media scrutiny, no HC coach, transfers and decommits, and uncertainty.
I feel like it was a fair game, and lowly and beaten down Maryland went toe to toe with #10.

On offense Duke's playcalling has been terrible. Deon Jackson is arguably the best RB in the ACC and he's only carried it 5 times (for 39 yards). They aren't running the clock and snapping it w/ 25 sec on the play clock. They should be up by at least 7-10 in the 1st half.

I'm also tempted to believe that the ACC Coastal is better than the Atlantic based on today's results.

Even though last years UCF was better, I do think UCF matches up well against Bama. Good running game. Spread team QB who can run and pass well, speed everywhere on offense.
They could score around 30 on them, can they hold them under that tho, doubtful.

Their defense is like all time bad.
If you combined their offense with like Michigan State or LSU’s Defense- that’d be a hell of a team.

I mentioned before that UCF is a very dangerous team with their uptempo.  The go after it, and even a month's prep is not going to stop it.  Saban hates those offenses because he can't sub.

One of Bama's consistent strengths is depth on defense, and that advantage is diluted playing a team like UCF.

They might have to fake injuries.  Is there a penalty for that?  Unsportsmanlike?  I see it in soccer all the time of course.

I have some experience and am sorry I missed this. Hope it went OK and the food was good. (For others reference, usually 2-3 hours in the AM, plus whatever time the party is at night if they have one. When I was young the default gift was $18, but that might've changed)

So, to steal a line from a homer board, Jonathan Taylor was just a motherf***er, but in a good way. I've seen a lot of good backs at UW. In my first game on campus, Brian Calhoun ran for 258 and 5 TDs, and what we saw yesterday might be the best game I've seen a Badgers back have.

When UW went down 14, I admit I thought it was done. This offense hasn't been comeback good. But hat tip to Taylor, Jack Coan for looking OK and Danny Davis for delivering on his promise for the first time this damn year. Run D also pulled together well.

At year's start, UW was a hint overrated. Granted, 10-2 seemed pretty attainable, 9-3 with a west upstart pulling an upset, maybe better than 10 wins if PSU/Mich didn't deliver or the offense was really good. Instead, the starting QB regressed, and gave way to an ineffective backup. The vaunted line was a mess in pass pro and had run game lapses at bad times. The receiving corps lost its best player to legal issues, and the other three guys didn't deliver. The defense we thought was going to reload both didn't and has been ruined by injuries (multiple games where the whole secondary or D-line is just gone)

Keeping the axe is no guarantee. Minnesota has proven feisty, and I have a feel I'll be annoyed by the positive quality of Fleck's team before too long. But if UW can pull that out, considering everything, I'll take 8-4 and be pleased as hell.

I was not able to see any games again but I wish I'd seen this. Taylor is going to end up as the best TB running back to ever play at Wisconsin. The kid can go well over 4K yards this year, which smashes Ron Dayne's 2 year record of 3600 or so. I don't think he breaks the overall record, because he's gone after next season.

Beautiful part of the world.  Post a photo if not too inconvenient.
Will you be able to see smoke?
So I was wrong re: smoke... Definitely impacted everything. It didn't smell smoky, but there was a heavy haze everywhere.
In the below pick you can make out the hills in the background. On a normal day, they're vibrant green and clear.

Oh, and thanks a lot Purdue... This is rigoddamndiculous... Up 14 in the 4th, seal the game with an interception only to have it called back on penalty, and then you just let Taylor walk all over you?

Sad to be 5-4 with two winnable and one tough game ahead, and now we'll be fighting for our lives in Bloomington to avoid 5-7 against another team with equally high stakes.

Suppose it's tough to complain, though... Three wineries in Dry Creek yesterday followed by dinner at Russian River Brewing.

Three Napa [St Helena] wineries scheduled today, with a break for lunch at V. Sattui in between and finishing with dinner at Mustard's Grill.

Already have a trunk full of wine and beer. We'll see what we add to it today :72:

In other news' Daughter #1 is flying down Thursday.  She's the last of our kids to see the new place, AND I scored two tickets to the Dawgs' game Saturday.  She kept needling me about seeing a game here (she's an OSU grad).  Now we just need to win.

Tickets were a bit pricey, but not as bad as some I've been too.

Bwar,
I was standing behind a tourist in line on Wednesday and thinking about his predicament. He came from further away than you, but either way, it's a drag to come to such a beautiful place in the one week (10 days? Hopefully not more) that it is covered with abysmal air quality and smoke from the Camp Fire. Just Brutal.

The second round of the Women's NCAA soccer tournament was moved pretty far south on Friday to avoid the smoke. The air was *just* good enough to play round 3 in Palo Alto yesterday. Alas, the  (#23) Badgers fell to (#1) Stanford, 1-0, missing a great scoring opportunity with literally five seconds to play. But there was a good Badger presence at the game, including yours truly, SFIrish, my kiddos, and even my parents (Stanford fans, mind you).

My step son in SF tells me he is wearing a mask out doors now.  A typical mask of course doesn't do much.  A lot of the bad stuff is too small or molecular.

Several of the wineries on the Silverado were pretty badly damaged and lost substantial production last year.

I'm trying to figure out what the orange stuff is they drop from planes on fires.  The retardants I know about are not nice to the environment.

We should all be wearing N95 masks, or stronger, when we're outdoors. The AQI has been consistently over 150, and was over 200 a couple of days last week. We're supposed to finally get some rain tomorrow--can't come soon enough.

You may have seen things like this on the Facebook, but I literally just took this picture out my office window; compare it to one I randomly took a few weeks ago:

We had full SCBA that we could optionally get trained on.

When Northwestern plays in the Big Ten championship game at Indianapolis on Dec. 1, the Wildcats will be joined by a caravan of 58 buses carrying more than 3,400 Northwestern students.

Northwestern sold out its allotment of more than 10,000 seats in roughly 48 hours, purchased by season-ticket holders and students.

After Northwestern clinched the Big Ten West division with a 14-10 win at Iowa on Nov. 10, Jim Phillips, the vice president for athletics and recreation, announced that the department of athletics and an anonymous benefactor would provide tickets and travel to Indianapolis for any undergraduate student who wanted to attend the conference championship game.
