Title: A game never played; a rivalry now lost.
Post by: Hawkinole on November 13, 2018, 01:02:36 AM
Notre Dame was Iowa's most important nonconference rival. The series ended in 1968. By 1977 Iowa State replaced Notre Dame as its nonconference rival. Up until 1977, Iowa had not played Iowa State since 1934.

In the concourse of Notre Dame Stadium hang banners commemorating big games in Notre Dame history. The cover from the game day program is featured on each such banner.

As we were leaving Notre Dame Stadium on November 10, 2018, I spotted this banner and took a poor quality photo with my phone. After I was on the train and warmed up, I zoomed in and saw the date, November 23, 1963. This banner didn't commemorate a big Notre Dame win.

The game was scheduled to be played in Iowa City, in rivalry week. But history took its course. The game was never played.
(https://thumb.ibb.co/dCpgDV/20181110-225350-1.jpg) (https://ibb.co/dCpgDV)
I wonder how many Golden Domers think of this history when they passed this banner.

I remember looking at that a few years ago and doing a double take. I really like how they've handled the various renovations to Notre Dame Stadium (save the width of the bench seats).

Why did you do a double-take?

Why did you do a double-take?
'Cause the first take didn't take?

I find the ND-ACC "arrangement" odd, mostly due to geography but also due to history.

I doubt they put up a banner for the one time UGA visited.

They don't have much of a history with the old guard Acc, but they do have quite a bit of history with a lot of the add-ons.

Yeah, Georgia Tech used to play them a lot, like in Rudy.

That is a Big Game for Tech and Atlanta with all the ND fans living here.

Oddly enough they don't have much history with Syracuse, who they are playing this weekend in Yankee Stadium.

Kind of strange, considering they were both major Eastern Independents with somewhat close proximity (Northern portion of the Eastern Time Zone).

Because at first blush I didn't register the date. Then I thought about why they were playing in late Nov. Then, wait that's after Dallas.

As we were walking into the stadium I saw no banner for Iowa. I figured Iowa, whom Notre Dame has not played in 50-years, was a long forgotten flyspeck in their history. I saw this banner on the way out, but did not see the date until I looked at the photo in the train and zoomed in.

One of our local attorneys was a student at Iowa at the time. He framed his unused game ticket. It hangs on his office wall. He was in the Iowa Memorial Union after the game was canceled, where there were bundles of game programs that were never sold. He acquired a program to keep for posterity - the game that was never played. These were life-changing events for our country.
