I walked into my kitchen last night, turned on the light and there in the middle of the floor was a big ol
possum
We looked at each other and I tried to figure out what to do
The last thing I wanted was a berserk opossum running around the house
He was between me and the back door so I couldnt just open it and let him go
I moved to the side and he then made a mad dash past me to the laundry room and out the dryer vent
hole where he had come in
amen
so today I guess I better put a cover over that vent hole
the old one was knocked off years ago by the yard guys
an interesting side note: while all this was going on our 2 cats just sat there and watched
from up high on the counter
great watchdogs

If that happened to me, I would have assumed he came in through our dog-door. I feel bad that opossums get such a bad image, they do so much good like eating ticks & other pests and most are actually immune to rabies, despite most people assuming they are all rabid.
I'm glad you and the cats survived the encounter and hopefully he will knock next time he wants to pay a visit.

We had a squirrel in our kitchen once. Back in grad school, where I shared a house with two other guys. Freaked my housemate who was doing dishes at the time right on out.
I just caught the tail end of the commotion, but I'd guess the idea of a loose squirrel going berzerk in a confined space may be where they got the idea of Alien, with that bloody squirrel shaped little monster breaking through that guy's chest and running loose on the spaceship.
