Title: A Bollman For Your Thoughts? SOC 11/10/18
Post by: MaximumSam on November 10, 2018, 07:23:48 AM
Woke up to it being COLD.  The dog's water was frozen, the faucet was frozen, and the space heater was chugging along.  The dogs themselves seem completely impervious to any change in temperature and zoomed around like mad as always.  Maybe they will calm down.

Fellas, it's a great day for some chili.  May have to hit up the store to find the odds and ends to put in said chili.  We'll see if the beans are marked down.

Lots of everything on the line today.
OSU, Michigan, still in playoff mix and East division mix.  OSU must win to still have chance at both.
Maryland is 5-4 and plays Hoosier today.  But they finish with OSU and PSU, so a win today is their best shot for a bowl.
Indiana is 4-5 but finish with Michigan and Purdue.  They need two wins and today is their best shot.
Northwestern is in the driver's seat for the West.  Iowa must win today to have a shot. Wisconsin and Purdue also have a chance and needs wins.
Illinois and Minnesota are both 4-5. Minny has Purdue, Northwestern, Wiscy.  Illinois has Nebraska, Iowa, NW.

Plus all those game I listed outside the conference can impact the playoffs.

Heck of a fun day for it to be cold outside and all warm and footbally inside.

A whopping 14 degrees here in Omaha this morning.  Heading to Lincoln shortly.  Glad we have seats in the club level.  I can tell the ladies in our group will head for cover inside.

Man, it's cold here, almost down to freezing.  Bright blue skies though.  Friends down from Cincy visiting, he's a Big Buckeye fan.

We'll be walking around trying not to die of exposure.

It's a balmy 10 degrees here in the Twin Cities. Pulling the pork shoulder we put in the slow cooker last night, then going to throw some buckets.

Chili is on, hope it cooks well into the OSU game.  Today's chili is brought to you by Aldi's, specifically aldi's country beef ribs.  I'm pretty sure they ain't ribs, but not entirely sure what they are.  I threw some sausage in the pot, too, because I cooked it for the girl's this morning and had a few links left over.  Other ingredients - tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, garlic, onions, jalapenos, chili powder, and cumin.  Sadly no beans, but hopefully the tomatoes will piss off the chili purists.

Also god damn figured out I had a small cut on my finger while dicing up the jalapenos.  Youch.

Serves ya right for putting all that nonsense in your "chili", and for even considering beans. Next time you'll know better.

Man, not jealous of stagnant autumns, but very jealous of 9 am kicks.  I remember some years Notre Dame had their game in Ireland that kicked around 9, and it was awesome.  Plus I'm more or less checked out by the night unless OSU is playing.

No, we're just not that good.
Florida needs to run the ball 8 out of every 10 plays to have a chance at winning.
A messed up thing that has occurred for the second time in 3 years - the HC goes with the backup QB who then immediately gets hurt for the year.

Ugh, Buckeyes extremely unimaginative on offense.  They finally get a good run, then they try to run the same play, then a slant.  No fakes, no misdirection, everything so easy to defend.

It's more significant that he came in than that he came out. OSU is desperate for that wrinkle in the red zone. But it doesn't have to be a permanent feature to be effective. And there are so many ways to play that formation versus Michigan when it matters.

I think Mark is just underestimating the injury. And/or trusting what BL says or "the look in his eye" before the game. Because if it isn't something touchy-feely like that, I'm not sure how the mistake was made.
Healhy Lewerke > Lombardi >>>>> Today's injured Lewerke.

I thought Lewerke looked fine at the beginning but seemed to fade on his throws by the end.  Lombardi has a gun, and runs like Tebow, so Bucks will have to get after him a bit in the second half.

Yes.
It doesn't have to "work out" for anything but giving the B1G a bigger footprint and revenue stream.
Plus, you don't have to negotiate more deals outside of the Big Ten for games.

Yes.
It doesn't have to "work out" for anything but giving the B1G a bigger footprint and revenue stream.
Plus, you don't have to negotiate more deals outside of the Big Ten for games.
What's the motive then ... other than to further destroy Delany's legacy once "a la carte" TV programming ends standard cable contracts and the revenue benefit of Maryland drops to zero or less?

Considering this is shared duty between our 4th and 5th string punters, they've been surprisingly ok after having two punts of <12 yards last week

I don't think that was about the Block-for-TD risk. I think it was the cumulative risk of that Block-TD + large punt return (w/ or w/o TD) + TD on short field. In that sense, I think it was the right call. MSU always needed more than a FG (not mathematically but realistically) to fin no matter what.

Plus, now there's a CHANCE to reset the field position game.

That's right. It's only a *proven* correct decision if OSU doesn't score another TD this game. But it could be the right game theory decision even if it fails that. Just based on given MSU the better chance to keep OSU under 14.

My thought exactly. Everytime Lombardi reads to run, I think about how off-balance OSU would be if Shea were doing that in between plays to Higdon or a more functional pass game.

I don't think returning to Lewerke made sense. I think you have to ride out Lombardi. Both are broken. But Lombardi at least has a winnable ceiling. Lewerke only has a less soul-crushing basement. That's no way to win.

Lombardi lacks any touch, but at least he looks like there's a chance.  Lewerke isn't even close.  And early, when OSU was being honest against the run, Lewerke was missing a lot of open guys.  Lombardi was throwing into much tougher coverage, against a DL with it's ears pinned back.

Uhhhh, no.  His OC stopped calling passing plays and Franks handed the ball off to the tune of 300+ rushing yards.  I can handle incompetence, but there's no need for outright lies.

If it's Evans or DPJ or something, you smack your forehead, but at least you get it for a playmaker.
Fullback, just get your yard and thank your OC that he let you touch the ball.

Looking like Narduzzi will secure his job for another year. Going into this year his seat was one of the hottest; now 5-4 Pitt is in the driver’s seat of their division.

It realistically could be 7-7. Probably should only be 14-7 but at worst should be 21-7. Refs doing MSU no favors and MSU making mistakes of their own.
Their dline is playing really good after a rough first qtr.

I frequently pound my head on the wall thinking about how many talented DL MSU had with 10 cent heads.  Montez Sweat on Mississippi State, plus Craig Evans, Josh King, Malik McDowell, Andre Robertson.  We have an all American DL of guys kicked off the team.

Peters should be the back up and Milton should redshirt.

Thinking out loud here- how much better would Michigan be right now if they had kept AJ Dillon to pair with Karan Higdon? Probably would’ve let them move Chris Evans to slot WR where he belongs.

I’d be kinda shocked if Shea left early.
He played in 3 games as a freshman and 6 as a sophomore before getting hurt.
This is the first full year he’s put together as a starter.
Think he needs to show more to the NFL guys. A lot more.
And I honestly don’t see him as a big time NFL QB prospect. He’s a little under 6’2 and maybe 205 pounds. He has a good enough arm to play at the next level but by no means does he have a cannon like a Stafford or Cam Newton.

If you add up all the "potential first round talent" guys in preseason each year, you end up with 100 players.  There are 32 picks in the first round.

Even if Shea lit it up, really don’t see him as a 1st round QB.

He’s probably really 6’1 and a qtr and 205 pounds. Tell me how many QBs that size go 1st round? If his arm strength and velocity was out of this world then I’d say ya maybe- but his arm is above average. It’s not amazing or anything. Just pretty good.

Haha. But that's not what he was saying. He was saying that "non-SEC champ Alabama going to the CFP instead of a Big Ten champ" isn't a relevant precedent this year. Because last year when it happened to OSU, (1) they were pasted by a meh Iowa team and (b) also lost two games. Whereas this year, Michigan lost a close one to a Top 4 team and will only have 1 loss if they are a candidate.

I just went back and listened again, since I hadn't changed the channel yet. Not to be a knowitall, but "OSU lost to Iowa this year" is not what he said.

They were talking about whether Michigan is guaranteed to be in if they win out. One guy said Alabama will get in, even if it loses the SECCG and last year is proof of that. Then the guy you're talking about said that last year's precedent doesn't matter. Because OSU got pasted by a bad team and also lost two games. Which is different.

Or maybe you were talking about some other part of their conversation?

VT has a ton of injuries and are just in shambles. So Foster sold out against the run and kept crashing the LOS with 7-8 guys. VT actually had 9 TFLs so it kinda worked! only those pesky 8-9 other times the Pitt RBs broke through and there was literally no one to tackle. Plus Pickett had his best game of the year.

I must not understand football very well. It seems to me that a merely above-average defense would be an incredible competitive advantage in the Big XII.

And yet, it's 60 minutes of mutual Olé! Is the make-up of Big XII teams (and their apparent emphasis/de-emphasis of O/D) primarily a matter of local recruiting? Tradition? Something else?

If not for the possibility of playing Oklahoma twice I would be too.  WVU even being in contention is sort of a middle finger to the league.  When they added the CCG they intentionally moved Bedlam up because they were afraid they might get back to back games between OU-OSU.  So the last two seasons WVU has  ended the year with OU.

ASU still controls their destiny to win the Pac-12 South but now has to win 2 in a row on the road to make it happen. Still, not bad for a team picked in the preseason media poll to finish dead last in their division.

I think you mean 3-way tie for first place?
If WVU beats OU, and Texas wins out, then the Longhorns own the tie-breaker over OU due to H2H, and would go to the B12 CCG in a rematch against WVU.  There's certainly no guarantee Texas will win out, but the Longhorns passed a major hurdle winning on the road @TexasTech tonight.  Now there's only ISU at home, and Kansas on the road.
ISU is no gimme, but at home the Longhorns have a good shot at winning.

Edit: Oh wait I think I see where you're coming from.  If WVU wins out they'll have sole possession for first place, so you're asking who would represent 2nd?  ISU and Texas have yet to play so that will add a loss to one or the other.  If ISU wins then OU owns H2H over them and rematches against WVU.  If Texas wins then Texas owns H2H over OU and rematches against WVU.

That's weird. I don't but maybe a bump will help your chances. I know ftbobs's data warehouse site goes back much further than that, but I'm doubting it'll be organized to show a pass defense list per year.

If the Big XII eliminated the CCG, it'd be perfect. If you go true round robin (the gold standard conference set up), you don't need a championship game.
I know why the guys in the office with sport coats want a CCG, but how much would Big XII revenue really drop per school without that game? I bet it's $500-700K max.
Not worth it.

As long as the committee give bonus points for CCG wins, that's their other incentive.  Once it goes to 8 and they all get an auto bid, then I think it makes sense to get rid of it.  You get a team in either way, you have a full round robin, and all you do is risk sending your second best team for a little bit of money.  Depending on the payout structure of the playoff, you might make more money by sending the team more likely to play two or three games.

I really hope the CFP at least temporarily stops at 6 before (assuming it can't be never) expanding to 8.

6 > 8 >> 4.

For 6: Five P5 champs. One at-large. The top two get a bye. That's a double bonus for the value of the regular season.

Perfection.

When it comes to the NCAA's official site and old stats, it's embarrassing.  It's old pdf images of old printouts on that paper with alternating lines of white and color.  Old, grainy documents.  Can't be bothered to type it onto a spreadsheet, I guess.  Not like it's from back in the 60s (those don't even exist), it's from the mid-90s.  I mean c'mon.

The NFL has not convinced me a bye is an advantage.  Like in the conference tourneys where the top non bye teams have a really good record against the bottom bye team
That may be. Though I think all you need for a 6-team playoff to well serve the regular season is the *perception* of the bye having an advantage. Even if it's a draw or detriment (and I doubt it'd be a clear detriment), I'd expect teams to want the bye.

I still like the 5-1-2 model best.  I'm also interested in only seeding 1-4 and letting those teams, in order, pick their opponent from the other 4.

I also think there needs to be a top 15 or whatever caveat to the auto bids.  I like the auto bid idea generally, but I don't like the chance of Northwestern upsetting Michigan or Pitt upsetting Clemson and getting in.

5-1-2: Is that five P5 autobids, one at-large, and two Go5's?

That's not bad. I don't think I prefer it, but it would be an improvement.

I like your auto-bid caveat at first, but I think it's just as risky as the problem it attempts to avoid: Top 5 team loses CCG to 6-6 Northwestern ... and backs in anyway, making the CCG irrelevant except to the degree that it gave the team a lower seed.

I think I'd rather watch Northwestern or Pitt get pasted in the playoff.

No, two at large, one Group of 5.

I don't like the "back in" phrase.  If they did enough to still be one of the, now 3, at larges, how is that anymore backing in than some team that didn't even qualify for their CCG?

Pitt would have set the NCAA record for ypp yesterday at 13.9, but they only had 47 offensive plays, and the minimum plays is 50.  That's kind of weird considering the reason for not getting there is because they were so good they scored too easily.

Record remains 13.5 by Georgia Tech against Kansas in 2011

I guess "back in" is a flawed and trite way to talk. But it also seems flawed to go into a CCG game knowing that very little is actually being played for. I mean, the championship, but my point is that if the favorite loses and barely cares, that sucks.

If you eliminate at larges then, I'd be ok with that.

I don't HATE a 12 team, all 10 auto bids, 2 at large model either.  I like having a reason to pseudo care about Sun Belt and CUSA races, and let their chamos, a couple at larges, and a conference champion who currently would be excluded play it out to get into a 4 team playoff.

I'd rather not include the Go5 at all. For example: When it comes to paying players, I'm hoping the schools write zero checks and merely open the players to independently pursue their own market value. But if that doesn't happen and the schools do cut checks, my consolation would be how that forces the Go5 to cut and run into their own level with its own rules, completely insulated from the P5s, perhaps not even permitting OOC games between the P5 and Go5.

I'm fully on board with players pursuing their own values independently, as long as you still identify and exclude boosters.

I'm also cool with another split, and leaving the Group of 5 behind.  But as long as they are all the same level, I kind of like 10-2, if only because there is always a bottom, and if the P5 breaks away, where is the next line?

I'm fully on board with players pursuing their own values independently, as long as you still identify and exclude boosters.
The trouble with excluding boosters is the missed opportunity to forever stop that kind of illegal thing with transparency ("accept it; it's yours. Now keep track of it with us for tax purposes") in order to voluntarily keep up the blind eye.
Now, I'm OK with what feels like a mistake. Because letting the players grab cash for their image and likeness is revolutionary, so whatever. Plus I think the persuasive element of cheating with boosters will be diminished by players accessing their market value elsewhere. Everyone wants money, but the players don't want to hurt their teams. Where's the break even point where the booster value falls beneath the value of not risking damage to their team?
I also understand the counterargument: that simply legalizing booster payments is unbalanced competitively (Helmet boosters can pay more than non-Helmet boosters). But so are payments from car dealership commercials, etc. And if booster payments become legal, were taxable, and EA sports/advertiser payments prove significant, I think the $100 handshakes (wouldn't strictly go away but) would become much less prominent, and the problem will have partially resolved itself.
I'm also cool with another split, and leaving the Group of 5 behind.  But as long as they are all the same level, I kind of like 10-2, if only because there is always a bottom, and if the P5 breaks away, where is the next line?
If Northwestern and Pitt get in, isn't that the bottom? I wasn't imagining the CCG winners taking the top seeds. I was just figuring that they'd be a lock to get in. And then seeded by a committee, with NU and Pitt at the bottom because who could be lower?.
Title: Re: A Bollman For Your Thoughts? SOC 11/10/18

If booster payments are legal, just skip two steps ahead and let the 7 or so helmet teams go play with themselves.

I don’t think all rankings should be locked in prior to the CCG’s but I think the teams that didn’t make it to their CCG should hit their rankings ceiling that week.  So last year Bama was 5 going into championship weekend.  That’s as high as they could go.  They could drop, but not go up.  Teams that qualify for the CCG can go up or down.

That's fair.  I don't care what the mechanism is.  I just don't think teams that weren't good enough to make their own CCG should be able to move above teams that lose said CCG

either the conference championship means something or it doesn't
you don't get a bump for beating a good team like Northwestern, but Northwestern doesn't get in for pulling the upset?
if it's s poor way to determine the conference champ then do away with the champ game to avoid upsets that clearly aren't the best team in the conference
hey, it's a stupid single elimination tournament anyway, so why not allow Northwestern this season if they knock off OSU or UofM?

But yeah, say we end up with an 8-team playoff and the championship game is an undefeated team vs a 3-loss team.  If the undefeated team loses, we'd have a 3-loss national champ.  Not the best team, not the best resume, they just happened to win the final game.

Why would 1 game trumping 12 there make any more sense if that's the mentality?
That's the point, not all games are valued equally.  If Alabama blows Auburn and Georgia out of the water, and loses by 1 in the semifinal, by your argument, they should still advance.  Based on 13 games, they are still one of the two best teams

Win your conference -> get into the playoff.
Win the playoff -> you're the champion.
Happens in almost every other sport. They've got other things, such as wild card, or in the proposed 5+1+2, an "at large" berth, to take care of worthy teams who didn't win their conference.
But all this "best team" stuff is just helmet-glorification.

I like the four team set up.  It is a balance between giving the best team a good shot at winning and not leaving out the real best team.  I doubt the teams ranked 5th or 6th are the real best team more than one time in ten years, if that.

I could go with 6 personally, but I think that is over the edge of the ideal compromise.

I think the #5 or #6 team could absolutely be the best team, but personally I don't care about that.  They didn't have the resume to warrant a chance to prove that, and I care more about resume than eye test or actual talent.

They COULD BE, but I think it happens once in a decade, maybe.  The COM should be able to find a best team with four shots.

That last spot will nearly always be contentious, whether 4 or 6 or 8 or 16.

Yeah, if we just was the truest full season champ, I'd like to return to a poll based method, pre-1998. But I gave up with that argument because I'm happier when my words aren't pointless. Now I accept that we're doing this thing, and accept that it's already crushed bowl (Rose) traditions and risks encroaching on the import of the regular season. So I just want the smallest playoff to include P5 champions. So I want 6.
We're in this weird inflection point where even people who hated the idea of going from two to four think it'd be far better if we grew from four to six.

Whatever the system is, I want autobids.  The conference championship games have turned into glorified scrimmages because it's not clear whether they impact the playoffs or not.  Sucks all the wind out of them.  I never loved them in the first place, but they are here and they are staying so might as well make them mean something.

Expand playoff to include six teams.  P5 conference champions automatically get a bid.  The sixth slot can be at large for independents or members of non-P5 conference.  If you're in a P5 conference and not the champion, too bad.  I don't care if you're ranked #2 and some other P5 champion is ranked 30.

Because we've devalued conference championships.  Used to be you were playing for a championship and the right to go to the Rose, Sugar, Orange, whatever, and let the chips fall where they may.
Now, nobody seems to care.  Occasionally you have 2015 Michigan State-Iowa or 2017 Georgia-Auburn, that is a true play in game for the CFP, but usually it's one team playing for a CFP, and another team just playing spoiler, who, oh yeah, happens to be playing for a championship.  If it winds up being Michigan-Northwestern, Northwestern is playing for a BIG TEN TITLE AND A ROSE BOWL BIRTH(!!!), but all everyone will say is they are trying to play spoiler.

Yeah, usually the Go5 champs suck up the bottom 5 spots, but then 6-11, 7-10, 8-9 are fun.  With UCF up in the mix, it actually extends things out to 5-12.  It's a little jaded this week because Syracuse fills that 12 slot.  They finish against Notre Dame and then at Boston College, so they'll either plummet or prove they belong.  Right behind them are Florida, Penn State and Texas, who, while maybe not much better than Syracuse, add a lot of helmet value to the field.

I'd be more likely support another split in Div 1 sports than an expansion to 8 teams in a playoff.     Ironically, I'd be in more support of a 16 team playoff and home games for the early rounds.   imo, historically, there is less separation between #8 and #16 than #1 and #8

Nobody talks about a 5-team playoff, but if the P5 split off, that could be the dreamiest for its straightforward seeding.
The tourney itself might seem convoluted but not really:
First weekend:
4 versus 5
Second weekend:
1 victor versus 4/5 victor
2 versus 3
Then the national championship.
No at-larges. No Go5 jockeying.
Title: Re: A Bollman For Your Thoughts? SOC 11/10/18

It's simple. Pre-BCS, the MNC was entirely a beauty contest. It was almost impossible to "settle it on the field", so voters decided who the "best" team was, and that was your champion.

BCS was a little better, but still a beauty contest. Voters and computers decided who the best team(s) were, and settled it on the field.

CFP is a little better, but still a beauty contest. The committee decides who the best team(s) are, and settle it on the field.

But in no way can you say the path to the championship is objective or earned. Teams can't figure out preseason what to do to maximize their odds. Is it limiting losses? Is it good OOC scheduling? Is it having a CCG or not having a CCG?

The simple fact is that there is no one path to the championship. The path is highly different for an Alabama vs a Purdue. An 11-1 Alabama that doesn't even go to its CCG will have a good shot at getting in. An 11-1 Purdue who narrowly misses their CCG will not. Ever. An 11-2 Alabama that wins it's CCG might get into the championship. An 11-2 Purdue will not. Ever. Because Alabama is one of the "best" teams despite two losses, and Purdue is not. One passes the "eye test". The other does not. It's all subjective.

If you want a "true" champion, you have to give teams a path to the championship. Win your conference, you're in.

Yes, that might result in a year that a team that is not the "best" team actually winning the whole damn thing. But you'll never be able to say that they didn't earn the title of champion.

If you want to crown the "best" team the champion, go back to the pre-BCS system. If you want a true champion, settle it ON the field.

I always start the playoff "question" with trying to state my goals in any scheme.  Once I figure that out, the rest gets easier, I think.

My main goal is to be entertained.  One of the entertaining things to me in CFB is its messiness.  I'm fine with messy, lack of specificity, no clear champion, mythical creatures all of it, but I also like having "significant post season games" that mean something.

One dude on ESPN last night said Bama is IN even if they lose to Auburn AND Georgia.  I think he was trying to be, well ESPNish of course.

I occasionally channel surf to Feinbaum but I can't watch for more than 30-60 seconds especially if he has callers.

I once called a Cincy radio show, I forget who hosted it.  My point was to AGREE with a point the host had just made about UK basketball, and the host dude basically told me I was insane and ignorant and hung up and went on a tirade.  He pretty much told ever male caller they were idiots, and yet males would call him frequently.  It was his schtick of course.  He was nice to the ladies in the main.

He was a former Bengal TE I think.  Trumpy, was his name oddly enough now that it comes to me, Bob Trumpy.  Someone told me he was very different in real life.

I'm absolutely fine with leaving out on P5 champ.  Heck, I don't have a problem leaving out 3 and just going with the 2-team playoff.
Earn your way in the playoff with your play on the field.  If that means playing a tougher schedule because of your conference, so be it.
Invites for the opportunity to grab the golden ring at the end of the season shouldn't be passed out to just any team.  And I certainly not worried about the fairness issue.  College football has been anything but fair for over 100 years, there's no easy way to make it fair.  First step might be to change the shape of the football so it would bounce fairly.
