Title: #10 Wisconsin (3-0) at BYU (1-3) Post Game
Post by: 847badgerfan on September 11, 2017, 07:23:01 AM
So it looks like BYU is almost decent, which is a pretty good step up in competition for UW this week. I expect PC and JL to leave their jars of vanilla extract in Madison and open up the playbooks this week. They will need to be better than they've shown to win this road game.

I wonder how they are prepping for the altitude? Is there any way to do that?

The "they're going vanilla to not show stuff" narrative always worries me. It end with a crossroads of "is this team worse than expected?"

You've got a 1-2 Cougars team with little offense to show this far.  I am expecting a rock fight. Interestingly, BYU's new RB committed to GA years ago, but he was on mission when he left.

I have a tough time seeing BYU scoring even double digits.  Their offense looks like trash.  Their defense will challenge Wisconsin enough to keep it close-ish.

Yeah, but that's what I saw. Particularly on the goal line stand. No play-action. No misdirection. Nothing but vanilla. Vanilla didn't get it done. Time to add some spice.

Hope Benz is OK this week. Kapoi is serviceable but they need their best 5 out there.

That's how I see it, but I'm not pleased with the UW secondary so far. Too many opportunities given away in the past two games.

These two teams are all locked up at 1-1 against each other in the all time series.

Both of the previous games were in Madison.

BYU edged the Badgers 28-3 in 1981.

Then Wisconsin beat the Cougars 27-17 in 2013.

There are few such things in college football as gimme road games, and if there is a short list of such places, Provo is far from it.  But BYU looks like an absolute mess on offense right now.  They are averaging 11.0 ppg thus far, and that's aided by a 20-6 win over FCS Portland State.  As bad as Oregon State is, even they put up 35 points on the Vikings.  Against FBS competition, the Cougars have 6.5 ppg.  They were outgained by Utah last week at home 430-233, but on 7 red zone trips, Utah came away with 4 FGs, 1 TD, 1 turnover on downs and the end of the game.  Banking on that is not a winning formula.   You get the Badgers in that situation and they'll just run over you.  After a rough start, mostly fueled by turnovers, the Wisconsin offense has been playing much better over the past 6 quarters.  A couple of young guys are finding their legs, suggesting that continued improvement will follow.  PFF graded sophomore OT David Edwards as the top offensive lineman in the conference last week, and redshirt freshman center Tyler Biadasz (which I choose to pronounce as badass) isn't far behind.  Slow starts have been BYU's thing recently though.  In 2010 they started 1-4 and then won 6 of their final 8; in 2011 they went 9-1 after starting 1-2; in 2013, a 1-2 start was followed by a 5 game winning streak; in 2015 they only lost 1 regular season game after a 2-2 start; and then last year a 1-3 start was followed by an 8-1 finish, with the lone loss being by 1 on the road to Boise State, and included a thumping of Michigan State.  It's tough to imagine BYU's offense will keep looking like this.  Tanner Mangum has played quite a bit the last two seasons, including being the starter for most of 2015 when he threw for 3,377 yards, 23 touchdowns to 10 interceptions and had a 70.7 QBR.  But he lacks anything around him, and 150 ypg with a QBR of 20 isn't a fluke.  You'd say they'd be fired up for a big home game like this, but they've played nothing but big games.  They had one of those Labor Day weekend neutral site marquees against LSU, and a home game against their arch-rival Utah.  I think they are what they are.
WISCONSIN 31, BYU 14

Sounds like Mangum is out for this game.

UW's starting left guard is listed as out for the BYU game. The start right guard is listed as questionable.

The problem is that the traditional depth that UW has had in years past (pre-2015) is not there yet, and won't be until next season at the earliest.

Chryst is very unlikely to burn any shirts this year, and the RSF kids need a little more time.

Sconnie could roll their D-Line out there on offense, and it wouldn't make a particle of difference.

The Badgers are gonna make the Haun's Mill Massacre look like Disney Land.

You mean the same OL that is now missing two starters from the one that couldn't get the ball in on four downs, starting at the 6 yard line, and two downs from the 1 yard line, last week against a much lesser defensive front than the one they will see on Saturday?

I have yet to see the line gel, let alone dominate.

Well the good news is BYU's offense is, as MDT put it, hot garbage. If Wiscy only scores 10 they'll probably win.

Altitude is a huge concern for the 300 pounders. They're gonna be sucking wind a lot.

Eh, at 4,500' Provo isn't super high above sea level. As long as the Badgers arrive 24+ hours before kickoff (which I assume they will) they'll be fine handling the altitude.

How can the BYU O be this bad?

I know that they hired a Defensive minded head coach. But still.

Wisconsin could roll out the walk ons, and run away with this thing.

Here's the skinny on the new QB.

Beau Hoge is accustomed to big stages and bright spotlights, having grown up watching his father, Merril, play eight combined seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears and then provide NFL analysis on television for ESPN.
But none of that could have prepared BYU’s backup quarterback for what he will experience Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium as the Cougars play host to a Big Ten team for the first time in Provo, the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers. Hoge will make his first career start in the place of junior Tanner Mangum, out for at least a month with an ankle injury.

Bad jokes aside, this is really cool.   To have to deal with a Hurricane like this or any life disrupting event is next to impossible to comprehend until it is upon you.   I work with a client who is in the Keys, he's just returned, and is hosting about 12 other people who can't get further down the Keys yet to their place.  I can only imagine.  I tried to explain this to my kids, this week, as they were frightened by our massive hail storm which caused some bad damage around here in May.     To provide comfort and shelter to fellow mankind (stranger or family) at a time like this is very noble and humane.
