Title: September 9 Creek of Consciousness (Irma Edition)
Post by: MaximumSam on September 09, 2017, 07:07:20 AM
The Boilers looks good last night.  The Lions and Bucks get a chance to look good today, before Irma eventually swallows us all.

I talked with some friends down there yesterday to wish them well and all that. They all have concrete houses with shutters and hurricane roofing. The only thing of concern is power (fuel for the generators). This is going to be a bad one fellas.

Anyway, the Badger play Monte Kiffin today so there's that. I might watch a little of it.

I'll watch more of the later games today for sure.

I need to get out to the market to get inspired about what I will be cooking today. I'm not even close to having any ideas.

Scheduling bitch:

Four games between ranked teams today, all on at the same time.  The noon slate is garbage, and the 3:30 slate is headlined by PSU and Pitt.  Gotta love college football peeling off their own viewers.

The whole family has been wrecked by Hurricane Cough and Headache, so not sure if I'll cook something up.  Made a quick bean and sausage soup last night, which I love, but no one else in the fam eats beans.  I'm not sure how I'm related to people who won't eat beans.

Purdue looked good enough last night to give Michigan a scare. After looking at their schedule, again, I can definitely see them getting to 6 wins and a bowl game.

We made one last week. Here's how I did it:
I purchased the ingredients, and then gave them a buddy that went to culinary school.

That smoke wafting in through my screen door isn't from a tailgating grill, how I wish, it's my neighbor at his morning "wake-n-bake."

Beans are one of the healthiest things you can eat. That sausage soup sounds like great autumn sustenance.Gonna grill some Brats today raw onion & brown mustard on top.Washing it down with some Great Lakes Oktoberfest later.Wish they'd brew that all year

I keep forgetting about the carry-out Thurman's locations that have popped up out here in the burbs.

Awesome burgers, but not if you have to drive downtown and then wait for an hour and a half, just to be seated.

Watching two games at once:

Iowa's TD drive was a big answer to ISU jumping up 7-0. The Cyclones are showing a passing game that can attack downfield all day.

Yes North Carolina's defense is weak upfront, and getting pushed around, but Louisville shouldn't be using Lamar Jackson like a running back this whole first half.

Got some bacon-wrapped tenderloins and gonna do homemade mac n' cheese. Lots of veggies too.

Really wish I had something besides Weber Q grills to work on up here. I'm thinking of bringing up my Genesis next year and replacing that at home with a Summit.

I've decided this ridiculous timing of all four of today's best games is just ESPN secretly trying to push their app on everyone. They won't shut up about the app today. Obviously trying to get people to watch games on the old computer and the TV to try and catch at least two of the four.

If/when Georgia pulls away from Notre Dame it's going to be because the huge advantage that the UGA front seven has over ND's OL eventually yields the game their way. UGA DL is dominating ND's big boys every snap.

With that said, after fumble by UGA deep in their territory, ND has 1st & goal.

a SR Baker Mayfield is a pretty special QB. He reads things so well and knows where to go with the ball instantly and he gets it there in a hurry and with deadly accuracy.

That great OSU pass rush hasn't had a chance to really take over bc Mayfield gets rid of the ball so quickly. He's been super impressive.

Shocking they turn to option at the goalie and watch JT shuffle his feet for a loss twice. Then JT has no touch and overthrows a wide open receiver. Yeah, he's #alltimebest. Horrible play calling, as usual. Dobbins gets you there and JT slams the breaks.

What he said. Baker is on spot. The glaring difference between a SR mayfield and a SR Barrett is obvious.

When is OSU gonna realize the Sooners are completely focused on stopping Barrett.  Spread the ball around more.  Buckeyes could benefit from some plays to the TE also.

Either Barrett can't make the plays, or the coaching staff doesn't trust him to do so.  Either way it is a big problem that seems to have neutered the OSU offense.

it's a bunch of stuff. Barrett has bad vision. He has bad touch. Misses wide open guys. The new O-Co is buying into the Barrett fleet of foot nonsense that's never really come to fruition. He's not fast. But they keep calling Option and Barrett keeps on keeping the rock rather than giving it to dobbins or Webber, both of whom are ten times faster and more agile.
It's a mess and has been for three years. It's a never ending nightmare for me. I just wish Meyer would nut up and accept that he's screwing us with this loyalty crap to a sub par QB.
Title: Re: September 9 Creek of Consciousness (Irma Edition)

Barrett seems most dangerous when running from pass formations.  They should set him up with some mid range routes + a TE in the flats to dump, or JT runs.  I think that plays to his strengths.

As I type he throws a pick.

Lincoln Riley and Baker Mayfield deserve a ton of credit here.  Well planned and executed offense.

OSU defense had a noble effort, but the offense just couldn't keep up.

Meyer's offense is not going to work against the big boys because nobody respects Barrett throwing down field.  I gotta agree with BB here, even though he is obviously frustrated.  JT is not the answer if he can't stretch a defense.  Meyer needs another Cardale Jones.

Boise at Wazzu shaping up nicely.
Utah at BYU always fun (maybe)
a couple PAC games UH at AZ and SDSU at ASU.
Gophers started out strong, tightening up a bit.

This is obvious going back at least a year.Joe Burrow looked much better last year.Long accurate throws that actually lead receivers in limited opportunities.Apologists keep bringing up JT's padded stats that have come over 5 seasons now vs mostly over matched opponents.JT Barrett couldn't beat Michigan(Wilton Spreight & Curtis Samuel did) or PSU or Clemson or Oklahoma. He's just bad but this is on that prima donna UFM

Highly doubtful.  On top of our defensive problems which aren't going to help against that USC assault, it also looks like we'll be starting a true freshman at QB (same one that played yesterday, since our starter was out with an injured shoulder).
Just hoping we can make a game of it.  We'll see.

Second quarter looked iffy, but the Gophers pulled away in Corvallis and won 48-14. First win in Pac 8/10/12 venue since the primordial ooze era.

Nothing wrong with a true road win.

Pitt would have some sembelance of a 7-8 win if they had a QB.

I knew WVU would be good after the VT game (which was extremely well played by both teams).

Pac-12 AD was crazy weird last night.

This is basically a rebuild year for Pitt.  In addition to losing starters to graduation (like every team), they have been hit by injuries and suspensions.  Couple that with losing a great OC in Canada.

I was thinking 6-6 before the season.

I don't think Canada would make much difference. The OC called a good game and its the same offense. Lost in the whole cancer thing was just how freaking good Conner was even at 80%. Can't lose a AA RB, AA OL, a very good QB, FB, and TE and expect to get the same production.
A big reason why the offense was so good was that there were so many weapons that you didn't know where the ball was going and/or focus the D on 1-2 players. Now you just have to key on Quadree.

Good luck finding any more alternates than those since 1990, other than the occasional red helmet when the prior coach was in town. But please do waste your time digging. Please.

revenge games haven't always gone well for Husker coaches

Doc Tom got a rematch in the Orange bowl with one of Barry's best Sooner teams in 1978

funny that the Badgers rushed for 56 yards on an avg of 1.4 per rush in the first game and 539 on an avg of 10.1 in the revenge game

The Huskers rushed for 259 and averaged 5.6 in the first game and 282 on 6.4 in the second

football is a crazy game, the best team doesn't always win.

The Gophers have worn the banana uniforms before, on Opening Night At The New Brickhouse. I don't care for them, but it turned out well then, so the jury is still out.
The sooner the Row the Boat bull gets dumped, the better. It's a beating in-stadium. I understand that Fleck has more of a coaching resume than Brewster could dream of having, but the Gophers have already fallen for one used car salesman schtick. I'll wait until he gets it done on the field.

Kansas stinks, but it's nice to see Shane do well. He always had insane physical talent. Off the charts raw talents. Just never clicked upstairs and he probably never had a shot with the way his career started off under Hoke. He went through 3 different OC's and offense in successive years and Inthink his confidence was shattered and he was never able to get it back.

Just twice to my recollection, with the "retro" thing. A couple of games with a red helmet.

The uniforms with the W on the front and back were awesome, right down to the true cardinal color. What they wear now is not cardinal, but the boss likes it and it's not changing Neither is his motion W. I've stated many times that I like the block W better, but he brought the motion W in and the whole school uses it now.

The current incarnation pales in comparison to the one with the W on the front. They should revisit their decision to change that.

It reminds me of the Dartmouth helmet. Old school.

Of course googling that up reveals that Dartmouth has a chromed out version of that helmet.

They should wear Purple Jerseys instead of Burgundy, have a motion M and then never change the uniform after that, except for twice; not including the occasional tinkering with the helmet color.

3-9 with win vs Rutgers, or 2-10....who cares?
They still went bowling, Flowers was a dynamic playmaker, and we beat them soundly.
I don't care about any other noise.
