5. Penn State (-1) - Looks beatable
Not Good
6. Michigan State (--) - Everyone below them ('cept Purdue) looks worse.
7. Maryland (--) - getting blanked, looks bad
8. Purdue (+3) - Super Bowl Champs. Tyler Trent Strong!

What the hell, I feel like I was given permission to have some fun with the power rankings this week. So let's have some fun!
1. Mich
The new clear #1.
2. Iowa
Looking good since the bye week despite some injuries on defense.
3. Wisc
Not much on resume except victory at Iowa.
4. Purdue
Dominating the last couple of weeks. This is not as much of stretch for me as you may think, since they have been moving up my list every week since they upset BC.
5. OSU
the wins over Rutgers, PSU, and Minn are not so impressive now, then they go out and lay a big fat egg at Purdue.
6. NW
Whether they are playing Mich, or Rutgers the game is going to be close. Somehow I got this sneaking suspicion that NW might snatch a division title this year flying under the radar.
7. MSU
Lost to NW, beat PSU. #7 seems about right.
8. PSU
Other than a blowout of Pitt, and some close losses at home to OSU, MSU, they have not done anything that says they deserve a high ranking.
9. MD
They really did not show up against Iowa.
10. Indy
A couple of spots behind PSU sounds about right
11. Neb
Ok, maybe they are not the worst team in the conference. Congrats on first win.
12. Minn
Row, Row, Row hey your boat is sinking!
13. ILL
Chance to move up is coming up.
14. Rut
Now there is no doubt. Worst team in the conference. Don't let the close loss to NW give you false hope.

9. Nebraska: Running the ball, learning the defense
10. Indiana: Just try to play some defense

To get embarrassed like that? That's not sleep walking, that's broken.

There are a lot of goofy low rankings for OSU. So this will be the least meaningful rank of their season by far. That pass O is the best we've seen around here for some time. It's just that they're more of a chaos team than is normal. Incredibly high ceiling still. Not having Coombs could be the most durable challenge (the one least likely to turn around). On the other hand, I really do expect OSU to turn around its run offense. There's no obvious reason to not be great there.

I'm kinda' bummed about football. Just like Michigan, Iowa beat the Terps worse than the score indicated. It was no contest. I guess we're not ready for B1G football yet after all...

My rating is more based on the defense than the offense. The 3 teams I have above them I would pick to beat them on a neutral field, next weekend.

Lots of trouble ranking this week. Hard for me to balance overall results with how good I feel teams are and this is kind of a mish mash. Might have to rethink more next week.
1. (1) Michigan: Zero question they deserve to be here now. Have beat good teams at home and on road. Finally got the Michigan State monkey off their back.
2. (5) Wisconsin: Think this is higher than they will end up, but the win over Iowa matters a lot still, especially on the road.
3. (6) Iowa: Playing lights out.
4. (2) Ohio State: Running game not working at all. Only reason higher than Purdue for right now was Purdue's horrible start. Things keep looking like last night and will drop down more.
5. (3) Michigan State: Lost a rivalry game, but lots of talent here.
6. (9) Purdue: Still have to knock them somewhat for earlier losses, but they were all close. Good argument for putting them higher now, but going to wait another week or two.
7. (4) Penn State: Indiana game got close at end, but ended the 2 game losing streak.
8. (7) Northwestern: Kind of the opposite of Purdue. I don't think this is a great team this year, but Big Ten wins help resume enough I don't like putting any further down.
9. (11) Nebraska: Finally got the win. Think will continue to look up rest of the year.
10. (8) Maryland: More issues than I thought this team had early.
11. (12) Indiana: Couldn't quite finish it, but good late comeback vs. Penn State.
12. (10) Minnesota: Hard giving Nebraska first win of year like that at this point in season.
13. (13) Illinois: Seems likely to stay around here.
14. (14) Rutgers: Almost had it.

I went to the game. Iowa City had wind gusts up to 59 mph. Temps were mid-40s. It was not a good day for passing, but if it were, it may have made things worse for Maryland.
Iowa has a good run game defense especially against teams that have no serious passing threat, and on Saturday no team could have a serious passing threat in Iowa City.
We were late to the game as we went to a college X-Country meet earlier in the morning in Cedar Rapids, and arrived just in time to see Iowa score its first touchdown. As we were walking outside, we experienced sustained winds probably above 50 mph maybe above 60 mph owing to the stadium and winds diverting around it. You could walk 30 feet west and the sustained winds were closer to 35 mph. The wind was crazy. It could affect long snaps, as well as passing.
I don't understand punting so much. In my era, punters tried to spiral punts. If it were windy lower the trajectory. Maryland punter would put back spin on every punt, end-over-end, and punt high. It would go 25 yards and in the north wind, drop straight down. The Iowa punter punted one on a line drive less than 10 feet off the ground, just enough to get it past the linemen, and it went into the wind probably 40 yards 30 of which were bouncing forward off the turf. It looked horrible but was effective.
And by 10 p.m. my wife and I went for our nightly walk, and it was completely calm.

I'm not sure I understand these figures (either how this ST number is generated on its own or how ST+Off+Def contribute to a team's overall figure).

Ferentz was extremely smart using timeouts to use the wind in his favor.
Very good coaching.
Lees is a weapon, but even the snap in the wind can throw off their timing.

We noticed the well-timed time-out with 1-second left in the quarter. Ferentz is not known for time-management, but he clearly is starting to catch onto it.

Kasim Hill just about to cough it up, to an offensive lineman. I couldn't get my shutter to operate even one more split second.

Don't be so hard on him. It's only his 20th season or something. :)

First, thoughts on Ohio State:
The last two weeks have been catastrophic for the Buckeye's in terms of power rankings. The lethargic win over Minnesota and getting blown out at Purdue are obviously part of it, but only part. At the same time, their two best wins (TCU and PSU) completely fell apart. The past two weeks TCU is 0-2 with a home loss to TTech and a blowout home loss to Oklahoma. Penn State has been only marginally better with a home loss to MSU and a close win over Indiana. Penn State is probably still Ohio State's best win but it isn't what it once was.
Second, WTF to do with Northwestern:
The Wildcats are either one of the best teams in the league, or one of the worst teams in the league, or somewhere in between.
- First the good: They led nearly the whole game and only lost by a FG to the Michigan team that nearly everyone will now have ranked #1 and they went to East Lansing and beat the Spartans by two scores. The Wildcats also performed 33 points better than the Buckeyes in West Lafayette. Based on those three results they should be easily top-4 in the league.
- Now the bad: They needed OT to beat Nebraska, only beat lowly Rutgers by a FG, and had a horrible OOC. Based on those things they should easily be bottom-4 in the league.
Third, WTF to do with Minnesota:
I realize that the Gophers are 0-4 but here is the thing. Nearly everyone here has voted tOSU and Iowa well ahead of Maryland and Nebraska. I think we all think that Iowa/tOSU are a lot better than UMD/UNL but note that Iowa/tOSU beat MN by 17/16 while UMD/UNL beat them by 29/25.
So with all that said:
- Michigan
- Iowa
- Ohio State*
- Wisconsin
- Purdue
- Michigan State
- Penn State
- Nebraska
- Indiana
- Northwestern
- Maryland
- Minnesota
- Illinois
- Rutgers
*The biggest issue with Ohio State is how they respond. When the Buckeyes lost to Iowa last year they looked horrible but then the next week they came out angry and beat the daylights out of a solid MSU squad. We'll have to wait two weeks to find out how Ohio State responds this year but I see their #3 ranking as being very much up-in-the-air. If they do what they did last year and come out and just destroy Nebraska then I'll treat the Purdue game as just one of those things that happens and move Ohio State up. If they come out and look questionable against the Cornhuskers then I'll have to treat the Purdue result as what the Buckeyes are and move them down.

Groups emerging in this week's rankings:
- Michigan
- Iowa, tOSU, UW
- PSU, PU, MSU
- NU, UMD, IU, UNL
- MN, IL
- RU
It is interesting looking at the votes for Ohio State. So far there are 13 voters and nearly half (6) have them #2. I see that as basically the "$h!t happens" vote. Then another nearly half (also 6) have them 4th, 5th, or 6th which is basically the "this is what tOSU is" vote. I am the only voter to have Ohio State at #3. I do not want to overreact but I also do not want to pretend Saturday night didn't happen.

That's about how I see it, except I think there's some lingering helmet bias keeping UNL higher than they should be. I'd put them in group 5 at best.

Well, it's interesting to think about. My thought is if "we" are going to excuse Purdue's early losses because they were close, we should consider the same for UNL. They had been "close" a number of times until they finally got their win Saturday.
-
Who would be favored on a NF between OSU and Iowa or OSU and Wisconsin?
I think it would be OSU.
I think only UM would be favored against the field.

as a Husker fan, I see UNL at about the same level as Northwestern. Blew a 4th quarter lead in Evanston and went to OT.
Not sure if the Huskers are up with the Terps and the Hoosiers, but I'm pretty sure they are better than the Gophers and the Illini.
I also think UNL is getting better each week

1) Michigan: Looking good.
2) Ohio State: upsets happen; still don't see a challenger below them that is obvious. But that was a bad loss.
3) Penn State: beatable? Sure. Better than those that come after? Probably.
4) Wisconsin: not an especially good team, but good enough to go here.
5) Iowa: still lost at home to Wisconsin. Good win, though.
6) Michigan State: dangerous.
7) Maryland: best remaining resume.
8) Purdue: wow.
9) Northwestern: least impressive 4-0 in conference imaginable.
10) Indiana: most teams would be 1-4 against their conference slate so far.
11) Nebraska: for the win?
12) Minnesota: yikes.
13) Illinois: head-to-head, baby.
14) Rutgers: Rutgers. But came *this* close to getting me those stupid upset picks points...sigh.

Last week in parenthesis...
- MICHIGAN (2) - at least #1 is easy this week
- IOWA (3) - nothing against Wisconsin, I just really think Iowa makes for the more interest CCG
- OHIO STATE (1) - we all felt that coming, we just couldn't totally buy in
- PENN STATE (4) - road wins are no joke, but the offense continues to leave something to be desired
- PURDUE (9) - pulling a typical Northwestern
- MICHIGAN STATE (5) - not even sure what options are left on offense at this point
- WISCONSIN (6) - let Illinois hang around for a second, then did what we assumed they'd do
- MARYLAND (7) - not sure what the issues are with the offense right now
- INDIANA (10) - dude, hang onto the football!
- NEBRASKA (12) - finally got just enough defense to let their offense do their thing
- NORTHWESTERN (8) - close win over Rutgers might be worse than a loss to any other team, including Illinois, for purposes of my rankings
- MINNESOTA (11) - are Gophers fans still buying into Fleck?
- ILLINOIS (13) - Lovie Smith's beard in the snow is worth hoping he continues coaching for a long time
- RUTGERS (14) - Northwestern isn't even good, and pulling off a win there might have been the most shocking Big Ten result I can ever recall

I posted results this morning through ELA (16 voters). I have now added in @LetsGoPeay (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=7) 's vote. The only thing that changed is that Ohio State and Iowa are now tied for 2/3 in the raw chart but Ohio State still holds a VERY slim lead after dropping the high and low (because Ohio State's worst votes is for 6th and Iowa's is for 5th).
I found the Iowa/Ohio State conundrum interesting. There are now 17 voters:
- Neither Iowa nor Ohio State have any first place votes.
- Ohio State has 8 second place votes, Iowa has 6.
- Iowa has 6 third place votes, Ohio State has 2.
- Ohio State has 5 fourth place votes, Iowa has 2.
- Iowa has 3 fifth place votes, Ohio State has 1.
- Ohio State has 1 sixth place vote, Iowa has none.
Ohio State has more second place votes but they also have more fourth place and worse votes. I think this illustrates that none of us really know what to do with the Buckeyes. The people who saw the tOSU/PU game as just one of those things only dropped tOSU to #2. The people who think it is a bigger structural problem with the Ohio State team dropped them accordingly. We'll find out in the coming weeks.
There was a lot of movement this week:
- Ohio State and Michigan traded #1 and #2 but the movement was bigger than that. Ohio State went from substantially ahead of Michigan to substantially behind and essentially tied with Iowa for #3.
- Penn State and Wisconsin traded #4 and #5.
- Purdue was up three spots passing Maryland, Northwestern, and Michigan State.
- Michigan State was down one, passed by Purdue.
- Maryland was down two, passed by Purdue and Northwestern.
- Indiana was up one, passing Minnesota.
- Nebraska was up one, passing Minnesota.
- Minnesota was down two, passed by Indiana and Nebraska.
Looking ahead to this weekend's games:
#11 Nebraska has an OOC game against Bethune-Cookman (this replaces the cancelled Akron game). #1 Michigan, #2 Ohio State, and #14 Rutgers are off this week.
- #3 Iowa at #5 Penn State
- #4 Wisconsin at #8 Northwestern
- #6 Purdue at #7 Michigan State
- #13 Illinois at #9 Maryland
- #10 Indiana at #12 Minnesota
Penn State / Iowa: This practically a B1GCG elimination game. Penn State would already need a lot of help to get there but if they lose this it would become nearly impossible. Iowa similarly would still have a mathematical chance but they would need a lot of help.
Wisconsin / Northwestern: Will the real Northwestern please stand up? Their win in East Lansing is great and their win over Purdue looks better than ever and their close loss to Michigan is a strong result as well but this team also lost at home to Akron, got drilled by Dook, barely survived Nebraska and then, worst of all, barely survived Rutgers. My take is that the good version of Northwestern wins this easily while the bad version gets run off the field.
Purdue / Michigan State: I think the big storyline here is whether or not Purdue can avoid the temptation to spend half the week celebrating their win over Ohio State. Last year the week after Ohio State's bad loss to Iowa the Buckeyes dominated a solid Michigan State team while the Hawkeyes got pasted by Wisconsin.
Illinois / Maryland: If the Terps are going to go bowling they almost have to win this. In theory they could go .500 against MSU, IU, tOSU, and PSU but I wouldn't bet on it. The Illini's bowl hopes probably ride on this game as well.
Indiana / Minnesota: Indiana needs two more wins to go bowling and this almost has to be one of them. The Gophers certainly didn't look like a bowl team in Lincoln and if they lose this you can stick a fork in them.

Huh, I thought I had saw someone vote OSU at #13, but they must have changed it.
I was mostly curious just how much one vote could skew the average when you throw out the high and low.

Originally, Ty had, if I'm not mistaken.
-
Michigan's tracing to-date is very pleasing. With one ugly exception, it's a continuous upslope.

Yah, I was pretty pissed off at the apparent quitting of my team. But I went back and followed my guideline of not moving a team up or down 3 spots in a week.
-

One absolute certainty is that is over. I'm not saying they'll fall and they obviously will not drop this week, but there will be no more upslope from here.
-
...and if they can cling to that top spot the rest of the way, they'll be rewarded with the honor of getting pantsed by Bama, in a National Semifinal.
-
If Michigan wins out, I bet they aren't seed #4.
-
So they lose to Notre Dame again?
-
So they lose to Notre Dame again?
That's ABSOLUTELY the unscheduled game I want most.

ha, you and everyone else in the conference/Nation.

except for Notre Dame
