Title: Week 7 computer rankings
Post by: Anonymous Coward on October 14, 2018, 01:10:55 PM
Hi guys. Please feel free to delete this top message and merge the rest if this seems unnecessary, but it has occurred to me that putting computer rankings in medina's thread has two drawbacks:

- influence votes
- just another thing that might get in the way of medina's tally

If y'all agree, I'm going to put my S&P+ update in its own thread from now on. But they could all go here: S&P+, Massey, FEI and now that we're into week 7 the more detailed versions per side of the ball and group will be out as well.

S&P+ Ratings this week:
.
4. Michigan             (Rating percentile, 96.9% - Offense Rk, 27 / Defense Rk, 1 / Special Teams Rk, 5)
5. OSU                   (96.7% - 4/41/20)
7. PSU                    (94.5% - 19/16/98)
16. Wisconsin          (88.2% - 5/63/47)
21. Iowa                 (84.1% - 53/19/45)
33. MSU                 (76.2% - 75/21/36)
39. Purdue              (73.9% - 17/84/69)
53. Minnesota         (61.6% - 103/23/15)

68. Northwestern    (46.7% - 99/43/120)
69. Nebraska          (45.1% - 61/79/110)
102. Illinois            (18.3% - 80/111/42)
124. Rutger            (5.5% - 127/92/8)
.
Offense Only:
.
1. OSU (4)
2. Wisconsin (5)
3. Purdue (17)
4. PSU (19)
5. Michigan (27)
6. Iowa (53)
7. Nebraska (61)
8. Maryland (74)
9. MSU (75)
10. Illinois (80)
11. Indiana (88)
12. Northwestern (99)
13. Minnesota (103)
14. Rutger (127)
.
Still a big gap between #5 and #6, though by skipping ahead of others in its group, Iowa also shrunk the margin a bit
.
Defense Only:
.
1. Michigan (1)
2. PSU (16)
3. Iowa (19)
4. MSU (21)
5. Minnesota (23)
6. OSU (41)
7. Northwestern (43)
10. Maryland (45)
8. Indiana (50)
9. Wisconsin (63)
11. Nebraska (79)
12. Purdue (84)
13. Rutger (92)
14. Illinois (111)
.
Conference defense keeps taking a hit.
.

Special Teams Only:
.
1. Michigan (5)
2. Rutger (8)
3. Maryland (9)
4. Minnesota (15)
5. OSU (20)
6. MSU (36)
7. Illinois (42)
8. Iowa (45)
9. Wisconsin (47)
10. Indiana (65)
11. Purdue (69)
12. PSU (98)
13. Nebraska (110)
14. Northwestern (120)
.
This has been the most volatile of the three, which, given the small STs sample sizes per game probably makes every kind of sense.

There's a reason I always wait until Thursday to post them.

I figured that was maybe because the Massey comes out midweek. Makes sense though. This can be a one-timer (or if merged a zero-timer).

Although I should say the other reason is to allow as many rankings to be entered into the composite as possible first, as it's continuously updated.

I do see some humor in saying "I'll post data elsewhere, to make sure data doesn't actually influence people's analysis."

Ha. Keeping it out of the way for medina, though? In any event, doesn't matter. Feels like a one-off.

FWIW:
The reason I always try to start the rankings thread is so that I can modify it thus putting the results as the first post.

There are some wonky-ass individual computer rankings, lol.
My favorite is the "Weighted Win Paths":
1. Notre Dame
2. LSU
3. Florida
4. Texas
5. Kentucky
6. Michigan
7. Washington
8. Stanford
9. Oklahoma
10. Alabama
11. Texas A&M
12. Clemson
13. Iowa
14. Ohio St
15. Utah

I think we knew that. Not sure I understand its connection to this thread, though.
But since you're here and the other one is your thread, I'd like your opinion. Does the mixing out outsider and and poster rankings have any downsides, or should we definitely just do one thread for everything?
