Title: Stirring the pot
Post by: Big Beef Tacosupreme on September 07, 2017, 11:19:16 AM
let's see if I can annoy you.

Maryland - So I watched Ty Johnson's highlight video because apparently some think he's the second best back in the league.  The turtle glasses are strong on that comment.  He seems to go down on first contact, and his moves aren't very good.  He does appear to be a good receiver.  He's fast enough to break a big one if he finds a hole.  Essentially, Maryland has a wide receiver playing tailback.

Michigan - Last year there were talks about how Wilton Speight may be one of the best QBs in the league.  In the off season we heard about how amazing and how many recruiting stars were going to be catching balls.  Now we are hearing about how good Florida's defense is.  Here's a thought - Michigan's passing game simply isn't good.

Ohio State - Ohio State had more offensive yards than any other B1G team last week.  They ran 86 plays and average 6.9 yards per play.  That ranks them 4th in the B1G.  I saw the game live and I had myself convinced their offense was just pedestrian.  I expect a pretty big improvement from week one to week 2 as well.  They might actually be the best B1G team, and the rest of us are simply in denial.  This really rustles my jimmies.

Nebraska - Nebraska ought to go back to the triple option, as the whole forward pass thing just isn't working for them.  They never seem to get any better than average.  Also, this isn't the Big Twelve.  Try playing some defense now and again.  36 points to a Sun belt team?  This team will be lucky to make a bowl game.

Iowa - Let's try not to have another clunker at Iowa State.  In the last 6 games against ISU, they have gone 3-3.  Every year this team gets off to such a slow start -- Maybe they ought to take the Rich Rod approach and sneak some extra practices in.

Only Illinois could win a game and somehow look even like a worse team than we thought.

Wisconsin - Still seems to have some issues on defense, despite only allowing 10 points.  Utah State had 4 turnovers, 93 penalty yards, and a missed 4th down conversion in FG range.  I'm curious as to how Wisconsin's defense will perform against a good offense.  Fortunately for them, it looks like they don't face a competent offense this year.

I probably should have put in some bad stuff about OSU, but I honestly couldn't think of anything.   It is one of my great failures in life...

Well...

They spent the entire first half punting.

That was sorta lame.

Michigan's passing game is fine.  I would not trade Speight for McSorely where I would trade any of Michigan's RBs for Barkley.

Penn State slaughtered Akron, but Akron is awful.  I wouldn't be shocked if Akron couldn't beat a single team the aforementiond B1G teams faced in Week 1.

I wouldn't trade a pair of used football cleats for Speight. anyway...

The Urb is starting to grow on me a little. I need a shower, of course.

From ESPN / Rittenburg:

"It's like a new generation of excuse," Meyer told CBSsports.com (https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/urban-meyer-driven-insane-by-herman-muschamp-blaming-inherited-players/). "[Texas coach Tom Herman] said, 'I can't rub pixie dust on this thing.' He got a dose of reality. Maryland just scored 51 points on you."

Meyer was referring to comments made by Texas (http://www.espn.com/college-football/team/_/id/251/texas-longhorns) coach Tom Herman -- a former assistant of Meyer's with the Buckeyes -- after the Longhorns' 51-41 home loss (http://www.espn.com/college-football/recap?gameId=400934495) to Maryland on Saturday.

Said Herman after the loss in his Longhorns debut: "If we all thought that we were going to come in here and, in nine months, sprinkle some fairy dust on this team and think that we've arrived, then we're wrong."

Meyer also said that Will Muschamp, who succeeded him at Florida (http://www.espn.com/college-football/team/_/id/57/florida-gators), blamed Meyer and his staff for the Gators' struggles.

Meyer has won at least eight games in the first season of all four of his head-coaching stops: Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. He took over at Ohio State following a 6-7 season -- the Buckeyes' most losses since 1897 -- but went 12-0 in 2012 even though the team was banned from postseason play.

"Everybody wanted me to say Jim Tressel left the cupboard bare," Meyer told CBSsports.com. "If I heard any assistant coach [say that], they'd be gone. You're done. Those are your players.

I hear TV guys [say], 'Wait until they get their own players in there.' They're our players. What do you mean 'their players?' The minute you sign a contract, they're your players. You didn't choose me, I chose you.

You're mine, absolutely."

He's done a 180 in my mind in a lot of ways since taking the Buckeye job.

I think he's learned from what he did wrong, in a number of areas, and that's the mark of a good coach, and usually a good person.

Yeah, Michigan fans were notorious for using that excuse during the Rich Rod years. First he couldn't win with Carr's players. Then Hoke needed an entire 5-year recruiting cycle in order to get rid of the Rich Rod players.

Urbs inherited a 6-7 Tressel ball team, installed a spread-option in one spring session, and then won the next 24 games.

In fairness, that 6-7 football team was better than their record indicated.  They just had their coach fired in the offseason and they had a looming investigation that they knew would potentially keep them from playing in the post-season.  Morale was crap and they had nothing to play for.

So Urban "inherited" a 6-7 team, but it was a team that was certainly capable of much more.

Dantonio took over a spread formation John L. Smith team that had won I think 3 total Big Ten games over the previous 2 years, never sniffed a bowl.

Turned them into a Power I team, converted a couple LBs to FBs, was playing Penn State for a Big Ten title by Year 2.

Be that as it may, it was the worst season since 1897; which was the worst season in school history.

Yes, another fine example.
He had similar success in Cincinnati with Gino Guidugli and the boys; while moving up from CUSA to the Big East.

Let's see what they do when they face actual B1G-level competition...  :)

(Is there a "throw shade" emoji?)

Calling that team "Tressel Ball" after Tressel had spent years (with Troy Smith and Terrelle Pryor) converting the offensive system to a spread is a bit disingenuous, doncha think?

Not really a 180 with regards to this.
The Senior class he inherited at BG had been awful. He turned them around right away.
He keeps a picture of that first BG senior class in his office to this day.
When the two teams played last year, that entire class was on the sideline, and they were wearing OSU gear; rooting against their own alma matter out of loyalty to a coach that they barely even played for.

He is talking about the off-field stuff. You don't hear anything about kids getting in trouble at Ohio State like you did when he was at Florida. That is what made most of us so hesitant about his coming into the conference. So far it's been very clean.

Urban Meyer appears to be doing things the right way in Columbus.  Obviously one could not say that about the cheating bastage Tressel and all his BS gimmicks.  Meyer has changed from Florida for the better.  Maybe he was always this way but got sucked into the cesspool in Florida?  Maybe he learned a lesson?  IDK.  Meyer was always an excellent football coach.

I was really impressed with him when he was at BG and Utah.

I wasn't very fond of his Florida run, for obvious reasons.

All you guys hated him when he was at Florida.

Just like all Michigan fans hated The Madman when he was at Stanford, after he dogged the education at Michigan.

I didn't hate him, per se, because I had been a fan of his in the past.

I was sad when he took the Florida job because I thought it meant he'd never coach the Buckeyes.

Now did I openly admit that I didn't hate the man after he dressed down my Buckeyes?
No. Of course not. Don't be ridiculous.

I'd've been crucified by a pitch forked mob of my fire-breathing Buckeye brethren.
