1. OSU: A layup of a game before heading to Happy Valley.
2. PSU: A little wary of them, but Saturday should sort out everything.
3. Michigan: Looks more like 2016 than 2017
4. Wisconsin: Very strong road victory to take control of the West
5. Michigan State: Also a nice road victory
6. Iowa: No shame in not quite getting it done against the Badgers
7. Maryland: That Temple game looks inexplicable
8. Indiana: Still a reasonably competent outfit
9. Northwestern: Veering into incompetence
10. Purdue: Nice win but still technically incompetent
11. Minnesota: Not at all competent
12. Nebraska: Anti-competent
13. Illinois: Pridefully incompetent
14. Rutgers: Incompetence would be an improvement

Buffalo beat Temple.
Tulsa gave TX a run.
Temple beat Tulsa.

Maryland did not have 3 starting OL vs Temple, and Temple started a new QB.  Procedure penalties hurt a lot as well.  No HC either.

IDK....Maybe Temple is better than expected, and Maryland without their starters, thought they could walk through them?

Guess we'll find out later.

Good
1. Penn State (--) - I've had PSU in the top spot all year.

2. Ohio State (--) - Prove me wrong Buckeyes.

3. Wisconsin (+1) - Did better at Kinnick than OSU last year.

4. Iowa (-1) - 3 turnovers can kinda kill home field advantage.

5. Michigan (--) - beating hapless opponents with regularity

6. Michigan State (--) - took care of a scrappy IU squad.

7. Maryland (+2) - Made Minney look silly

Not Good
8. Minnesota (-1) - favorite part of the game was watching the "Minnesota has a dark Fargo underbelly" commercial

9. Indiana (-1) - kept it close

10. Purdue (+2) - beating a ranked team will give you a boost in my rankings

11. Northwestern (--) -

12. Nebraska (-2) - wow, looked like an FCS team

13. Illinois (--) - Hung with the Lions longer than I thought they would.

14. Rutgers (--) - Sad Panda

1.  Ohio State
2.  Michigan (impressed with the improvement here. May win the B1G)
3.  Wisconsin - credit for the Iowa win, kinda hard to overlook that BYU game though.
4.  Penn State - defensive line and linebackers are NOT good.  Will have to win shootouts.  Lopsided scores masking a lot of problems.
5.  Michigan State
6.  Iowa
7.  Maryland
8.  Indiana
9.  Minnesota
10. Northwestern
11. Purdue
12. Nebraska
13. Illinois
14. Rutgers

My last week in parenthesis.

1. (1)Ohio State: Top 4 are very close for me. TCU loosing puts Ohio State's good game with them in a bit more question. Going into Happy Valley this weekend, I am not sure I think Buckeyes are most likely to win.
2. (2) Penn State: Struggled for a half with Illinois, but it was on the road on a short week.
3 (5). Michigan: Maybe too big a rise after this week. Wisconsin had the far better win this week, but power rankings to me are about how you feel teams are and I think Michigan starting to really put things together. I'm not sold on that yet, but even against a struggling Cornhusker team, that was impressive.
4. (3) Wisconsin: If they don't mess up in any games they should win, then they are heading to Indianapolis.
5. (4) Iowa: They had it right there and they gave it back to Wisconsin. Probably will have to be perfect rest of the way to get to Indianapolis and then still need help.
6. (6) Michigan State: Indiana had been playing well and that was on the road. Good win.
7. (9) Maryland: Texas win looks better and better and had convincing win vs. Minnesota.
8. (8) Indiana: Team playing pretty well.
9. (7) Minnesota: Not a good showing vs. Maryland.
10. (12) Northwestern: Didn't play and moved up 2 spots. Should have had them above Purdue before.
11. (11) Purdue: Top 25 win this week. I don't think this team is great, but few plays from being 4-0 instead of 1-3. I think they are better than few teams above, but with head to head loss to Northwestern and record, I want to see a bit more before moving up.
12. (13) Illinois: They have at least been in games last 2 weeks in losses.
13. (10) Nebraska: Can't believe I have a Nebraska team this low, but nothing has gone right here yet. They will improve.
14. (14) Rutgers: I don't know if this is Ash's last year, but I think he has lost the fanbase with the last 2 losses. It's going to be hard to get it back.

It seems like the power rankings are much less muddy this year than the last two (yeah, I was here lurking back then).  Except for the mysterious Purdue (who is certainly better than their record indicates), everybody seems to be largely in agreement for the most part.

Nope, the conference has 13 teams.  If Johns Hopkins is lacrosse only, and Notre Dame is hockey only, Rutgers is TV market only

Last week in parenthesis...

  • OHIO STATE (1) - although seeing Texas shut down TCU, maybe there is a little cause for concern on defense
  • PENN STATE (2) - went to bed thinking they were in some trouble, woke up to a 40 point win
  • MICHIGAN (4) - how much would they like that Notre Dame game back now?  Particularly since they got to face what appears to now be their third-string QB
  • WISCONSIN (5) - season saving rebound
  • IOWA (3) - have to get their minds right quickly, now that the West division crown might be gone, and it's not even October yet
  • MICHIGAN STATE (6) - run offense and pass defense still concerning enough I can't move them, up, but it's clear for now there's a gap right below them
  • MARYLAND (9) - now willing to write off Temple as just a one week hiccup
  • PURDUE (10) - suddenly they have a defense
  • INDIANA (8) - chance to prove they belonged in the top tier...and lost at home by 14
  • MINNESOTA (7) - yeesh, and now they are without Winfield too
  • NEBRASKA (11) - no MOL on the road at Michigan is worse than a home loss to Akron
  • NORTHWESTERN (12) - now with Michigan and Michigan State in the next two weeks, is when Northwestern seems to annually figure it out and put September behind them
  • ILLINOIS (13) - I said I thought they'd hang for a while, well they hung for longer than I expected, but then crashed harder than I expected too

Nope, the conference has 13 teams.  If Johns Hopkins is lacrosse only, and Notre Dame is hockey only, Rutgers is TV market only
I thought I heard that Comcast and some others pulled NYC off the basic sports tier already. Is that not true?

Correct, I think that was part of the issue, and they agreed to do it on a state basis, rather than a market basis.  So you still get it in New Jersey, but not New York, without paying for the sports tier.  At least for Comcast.  I hope those 5 years of $$$ were worth it.

1) Ohio State: yawn.
2) Penn State: still doing what they should to lesser competition.
3) Michigan State: never close against a conference foe.
4) Michigan: not the same old Nebraska
5) Wisconsin: bounced back in a tough environment and get a week off. Is it enough to get them on track?
6) Iowa: always a tough out
7) Maryland? I thought Minnesota was better than that.
8) Minnesota: I thought better, but still better than everyone else.
9) Indiana: three wins are worth something, and MSU is pretty good.
10) Purdue? Big win enough to cover up the close, bad losses? Look who falls below them...
11) Illinois: it was close through the end of the 3rd quarter.
12) Nebraska: because someone has to be #12.
13) Northwestern: because that's what the coin said.
14) Rutgers: because Rutgers.

Big Ten by offense:
6. Purdue (39)
9. Indiana (83)

Big Ten by defense:
5. Indiana             (19)
11. Purdue              (62)

What a difference coaching makes. With Wilson, Indiana was all offense, no defense. With Allen, they're the opposite. With Hazell, Purdue couldn't field an offense or defense, but this year it looks like we've got good [if not where it will eventually get] offense but little to no defense.

Results posted, votes through LetsGoPeay (15 voters).

Some thoughts:
There is strong agreement (10 or more out of 15) on five rankings:

None of the rest have more than eight votes for a spot.  Minnesota (4), Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Purdue (5 each) have the least agreement.

There is only one non-contiguous vote this week.  @Brutus Buckeye (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=31) has Maryland #5, nobody else has them higher than #7.  However, 12 of the other 14 voters have them seventh.

Looking forward:
This week's tOSU/PSU game is not just the game of the week but, at least according to our current rankings, it is the game of the year.  After that the pickings get really slim.  Five of our 14 teams have byes this week, those are:

Other than the obvious #1 v #2 game, there isn't much opportunity for the top teams to make a move because the next six teams do not have much of an opportunity to prove anything:

On both fronts, absolutely.
Since I'm in Bloomington, I also feel obligated to point out that in Wilson's last year, they were **thisss** close to having a complete program. He could obviously assemble an offense, and Allen can obviously do the same on D. That year, the O roster lost too much, so the bowl eligibility was earned through defense.
But if Wilson hadn't been fired...the revolution would have been on.
That has to read as embellishment because it's Indiana, but it's plausible. Marrying a Wilson O and Allen D should have been profitable.
Though Indiana has never been one to beat M/OSU/PSU since the mid-1980s, with Wilson/Allen, I bet they would have once or twice per decade.

For now, absolutely, and maybe in the end, also. Though with early season games like this, one or more "game of the years" ** usually show up to top it later.

Indiana's wins over Ohio State since WWII:
Indiana's wins over Michigan since WWII:

So 1987 is the only time since WWII that Indiana has defeated both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.

Indiana is 1-20 all-time against Penn State with the only win coming in 2013 over a 7-5 team.

FWIW:

In 1987 here were the conference standings:

The Spartans had an odd season.  They opened up with a win over USC then suffered back-to-back blowout losses to ND and FSU.  After that they went 7-0-1 in the conference but the weird part is that the tie was with one of the worst teams, Illinois.  They beat all of the teams that finished .500 or better in the conference only missing Minnesota.  Then they went to the RoseBowl and beat USC again.

Iowa lost to MSU and Michigan and missed Illinois.  Their OOC was a loss to Tennessee in the Kick-off Classic and wins over Zona, ISU, and KSU.  They beat Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl.

Indiana lost to Iowa and MSU in conference and missed Wisconsin.  OOC they lost to Kentucky and beat Rice and Mizzou.  They lost to Tennessee in the Peach Bowl.

Michigan lost badly to Notre Dame but beat WSU and Long Beach State OOC.  In conference they lost to MSU, Indiana, and Ohio State.  They missed They missed Purdue and beat Bama in the HoF Bowl.

Ohio State beat WVU and Oregon and tied LSU OOC.  In conference they beat Michigan, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois.  They lost to MSU, Iowa, IU, and Wisconsin.

Ah! I forgot about 2013 v PSU.
These records since 1987 are what we expect. The next 30 years would have been different, I think, if Wilson and Allen had teamed up for something like 10 years.

1987 is a major reason for why Mallory is still treated like a mythical god around here.

That MSU-Indiana game in the second to last week of the season was for the Rose Bowl.  MSU clinched it with a win, but if Indiana had won, they controlled their own destiny, needing to either beat Purdue in the finale or have MSU lose.  MSU rolled them badly in East Lansing, back in the classic 3:30 ABC Big Ten marquee days, where it kicked off in the afternoon and finished in twilight.  As a fan of watching old Big Ten games on YouTube, that is one of the higher quality full game broadcasts available out there.  Mallory also famously came into the MSU locker room after the game to congratulate the Spartans.

Oh, I completely agree.  In fact, this is something that I posted in another thread (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?topic=5584.0):
"Just generically, any #1 v #2 game is automatically the "game of the week" and in theory it is the "game of the year" but, of course, there is a possibility of more than one #1 v #2 game per year.  For example, if Penn State wins then the PSU/M game on November 3 could be another #1 v #2 game and if PSU also wins that then the very next week the PSU/UW game could be a third #1 v #2 game this year.  "

Indiana's wins over Ohio State since WWII:
  • 1988 over a 4-6-1 tOSU team
  • 1987 over a 6-4-1 team
  • 1951 over a 4-3-2 team
  • 1947 over a 2-6-1 team
Indiana's wins over Michigan since WWII:
  • 1987 over an 8-4 team
  • 1967 over a 5-6 team
  • 1959 over a 4-5 team
  • 1958 over a 2-6-1 team
  • 1954 over a 6-3 team
  • 1945 over a 7-3 team

So 1987 is the only time since WWII that Indiana has defeated both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.

Indiana is 1-20 all-time against Penn State with the only win coming in 2013 over a 7-5 team.
All of their wins over OSU were in either a coach's first or final season.
1947: Wes Fesler's first season
1951: Woody's first season
1987: Earle Bruce's final season
1988: John Cooper's first season

This is a big game, no doubt, but if Penn State wins, its remaining games with Michigan or Wisconsin could be as big (assuming each keeps winning, the winner of their game in a couple of weeks will have a lofty ranking headed into the PSU game).

Similarly, if Michigan reaches the end of the season with only the ND loss and Ohio State is unbeaten, their mild rivalry will be of some interest to the rest of us.
