Title: I Can Sing All Them Songs About SOC 9/15
Post by: MaximumSam on September 15, 2018, 07:03:41 AM
I thought fall had arrived but summer has come back in Columbus.  Hot and humid again today, which is never optimal football weather.I got stuff to make meatloaf, but hot and humid isn't great meatloaf eating weather, either.  Using a serious eats recipe, which calls for anchovies, so I'll probably have to make it on the downlow or else no one will want to eat it.

Boy, the U would sure make a nice scalp for the Rockets to add to their collection.

Stick that one on the mantel, flanked by Penn St and Michigan.

Not sure what I am cooking just yet, but I took a bunch of different sausages out of the ice chest yesterday, so a sausage sampler platter is going to start things off. Almost all the dockmates are here so we'll run through those.

Also out of the ice chest.. ground beef. Maybe I'll just do burgers.

Trying to empty the ice chest before we move.

Spent the one Saturday of real football weather in Nashville where it was like 90 and humid, return home and it's about 30 degrees warmer than it was last Saturday.

Have soccer and tee ball this morning to get through.  I hate the baseball schedule here, they have spring and fall ball, but no summer.  Means it directly conflicts with soccer, with nothing in the summer.  I find it incredibly stupid.  I love baseball, and struggle to get into starting a new season in September.  But kids sports being what they are now, you skip fall ball, even at age 5, you are on some shit list.  And I have the rare 5 year old where baseball is his favorite sport.

I opted out of fishing today, in favor of a couple of more cocktails last night. My buddy's been gone since 5AM - should be back by 9AM with the coho. I'll cook some of that tonight too.

I put anchovies in many things, that my family doesn't know about.  When chopped and used in another dish, they just add a depth of flavor.  Not like when eaten whole, which I also like on a pizza sometimes...

Texas is playing USC tonight at 7 Central.  Sadly it won't be much at all like that game 13 years ago.

I usually use fish sauce because it keeps better, but both are very underrated, underused ingredients that I never tell anyone about because they usually just make a face.

Anchovies are one of my favorite ingredients. I can't stand eating them alone or on a pizza or whatever, but man do they ever add umami to a dish. Really good stuff.

Rutgers is the other half of those two B1G newbies. The other is Maryland.
Kinda sad to see what's happened to USC and even more so to Texas. Of course, not all the schools can be top-15 programs and if a few have to fall so mine can ascend.. I'm good with that.

You guys are giving me flashbacks to my old pizza delivery days.

Pulling out of the parking light and up to that first stop light, when BAM!!! That pungent stench that makes you go "Oh %$&@, Anchovies!!!! Not again!" So then you'd have to pull off on the side of the road as soon as you could, so that you could relocate the pies from the passenger seat into the trunk, where they belong. Yet by then, it was already too late. Your car was going to stink for the rest of the night. If not the rest of the week.

Uncle Skeeter coming in for the game this morning

skinless brats in the oven for game snacks.  1/4lb brat on a bun and/or some brats chopped in bite size chunks with a multitude of dipping options.  Plenty of cheeses and there will be homemade kraut.

high of 88 today.  Good for post game golfing this afternoon.

New York strips for dinner tonight.

Emergency board meeting to clear out Badge’s ice chest?
I’m kept in by weather at the moment. Might run an errand or two before kickoff.

This is the first season my kids are playing sports in the Fall.  My 9yo son is doing flag football, and my 11yo daughter is way into soccer now and begged to let her play in the Fall as well as the Spring.

Those start up next week, so this is my last week of "freedom."

Oh yeah, I'll probably just catch the second half of the noon and first half of 3:30, then circle back for the late games.  I've found myself watching more NFL recently, simply due to how many activities we have on Saturdays

Florida State fans must be getting antsier with the opening of the Taggert era. Syracuse dinked and dunked their tired way downfield, converting 3rd down after 3rd down against a completely undisciplined Seminoles D. 3-0 ‘Cuse.

Nebraska Troy - eww. I want to call simutatious catch there, and ties go to Offense right?

Whistle blew, Troy let go of the ball , then the ref says it's an interception.
Laurentitus is saying good job by defender wrestling that ball away [after the whistle] to earn the ball.

*Shock*

I still don't know what was the right call there. I felt like DB had hands on ball first, WR did enough to get simultaneous possession. You're right that WR gave up *after the whistle*, but the ref is just standing there waiting to see what's going to happen. I think if the WR sticks it out, officials have no choice but to rule simultaneous.

How is Florida State this terrible on offense?
they haven't had a legit offensive line in years and they haven't had an offense since Dalvin Cook was there.
They have two RB's that were very highly rated as high school recruits, Jacques Patrick and Cam Akers. Patrick was the #39 player overall and the #3 RB in the 247Composite class of 2015. Akers was the #3 player overall and the #2 RB in the 247Composite class of 2017. Neither of them have come remotely close to living up to their rankings.
Francois is a decent QB but the WR talent is down compared to years past. The OL sucks. And the RB's are mere mortals and not freakish like Dalvin Cook was.
Taggart is gonna have his hands full turning that thing around. Jimbo Fisher jumped off a sinking ship at the exact right time.

The Seminoles are across the board awful. 9 3’n’Outs already. LT getting abused. Francois has zero timing with his receivers. OLine getting pushed back by Syracuse DL on 3 man fronts. Noles LBs completely lost and unable to catch on to a predictable Syracuse offense. Clock management cost Noles a FG attempt.
Only bright spot is Burns, a big NFL size DE and the Noles’ only semblance of a pass rush.

Maryland takes a couple steps forward and 3 steps back today.

Boise makes a debacle out a 26 yard FG to keep the game scoreless.

What unimaginative and stubborn playcalling to open the game by Michigan. It’s one thing to run your 170 lbs RBs between the tackles Vs SMU but do UM coaches really think that’s going to work come B10 play?
Which drive is that referring too? Are we talking about Chris Evans?

After looking like garbage in the first quarter Ok St follows a TD drive with a blocked punt and punches it in from there. 14-7 Pokes.

With Higdon out, the third-teamer (Tru Wilson) is getting play; he's smaller. Chris Evans is 216lbs and getting most of the play at RB.

The last three drives; really predictable up the middle stuff. The Wolverines downfield weapon has so far been Gentry, extending two deep drives with long catches. Other than Gentry everyone else is playing like they’re waiting for the game to end already.

Halftime in Ann Arbor. Michigan up 21-7 after a pick 6 to end the 2nd Q.

For a while this game had the uninspired feel of a Hoke coached 12-10 crapfest Vs Northwestern or Maryland, but the Wolverines front 7 has picked it up and Patterson’s downfield throwing looks great when the playcalling isn’t so restrictive.

Also, I feel disappointingly correct about UW’s O-line. Based on the numbers, tonight they were over-hyped. Today hasnt been great.

I think the refs gave SMU like 70 of its 80 yards on this drive. I'm not a fan of games where PI is called so ticky tacky. And the refs are really committing to it. I guess, adapt. But that sucks. Great coverage shouldn't be punished, at least not this often.

probably the most delfating 25 point win I've ever seen.

Quick thoughts:

stupid penalties and long stretches of sloppy uninspired play and poor play calling starting to look like a damn theme here. Harbaugh needs to get his head out of his you know what.

Shea Patterson is ridiculously good. BY FAR the best QB that Harbaugh has had at Michigan. He needs to stop being so f'ing stubborn with the offense and let the kid play. He is so athletic and can throw on the run so well. They need to use him more instead of just making him a game manager.

The O-line sucks ass. Runyan Jr and JBB need to be benched. I've seen enough of this trash. They struggle against Western Michigan and SMU. They will get destroyed by Wisconsin, MSU, Ohio State, Penn State. I don't know why they are waiting. Just going to put their young replacements behind the 8-ball even more.

The receivers/TE group is loaded with talent. I thought Gentry had kind of a weak game and he still put up big numbers. He left a couple big plays out on that field. This group will only get better the more they get acclimated with Shea. Donovan Peoples Jones is starting to look like the 5* everyone thought he was. Scary to think how good this group could be had Black not gotten hurt.

Sean McKeon sucks. I don't know why he even plays.

RB is a huge concern. They don't know how to use Chris Evans and the fact that an under-sized walk-on is their 3rd string back says a hell of a lot about the lack of development at the position.

Defense really didn't learn anything one way or the other. Played uninspired most of the game and it still took some help from refs for SMU to score 20. Only thing I learned really is what I already knew- these safeties just can't cut it. Metellus made a hell of a play but he really struggles in man coverage. So does Kinnel.

Seems like a lot of hand wringing for a guy until that pass hadn’t done anything all day.
In week one v Miami, He threw 5 OB intentionally to avoid taking a sack, had two batted down at the line and two drops. He also audibles at the line for their biggest TD of that Miami game, and threw zero picks.
Today was similar, except he threw 6 or 7 to a well covered WR- putting the ball in a place where only his player could get it, albeit a long shot. Down the critical stretch, every throw was on target and either caught, or not caught due to PI or a great defensive play.   Guy has zero turnovers.  Just a smart kid with a solid arm.

Shea Patterson is completing 70.7% of his passes for 6 TD's and 1 INT through the first 3 games.

Michigan's QB's threw NINE touchdown passes all of last year and threw more INT's than they did TD's. They also completed only 53.5% of their passes.

probably the most delfating 25 point win I've ever seen.

Quick thoughts:
Great points, and at the risk of overlap I’ll make a few of my own:
The OL was disorganized at first, BUT I thought they got it together as the game went on.
Though they were effective, the RB stable is frail. Does Harbaugh bother to recruit bulkier power backs? These guys are all so scattish. And you see how they eventually get knocked out of the game. Will a Samuel-Wilson tandom succeed against WIS & MSU in a few weeks? And how is it that in four years of Harbaugh an undersized walk-on is the difference maker at RB?
And speaking of WIS & MSU, Michigan’s schedule doesn’t seem quite so hard with mainly those two teams losing to lesser opponents. In other words UM might be able to take more advantage of the WIS, MSU, PSU, OSU gauntlet.
And finally, Shea is really good. Excellent at evading the pass rush, knowing when to run, finding who’s open, and most of all, an excellent downfield passer. My frustration is that it took until the second half for the coaches to let him loose. They are so fixated on getting a running game going with undersized RBs that they lose sight of having what would be a balanced offense if they bothered to rely on a passing game earlier. It’s like they have to force their running game to fail before they consider shifting to passing.

the RB talent is below average imo.
Kareem Walker was a recruiting bust and Harbs made a huge error with AJ Dillon. He hits on either of those RB's this team looks way different. Those guys have the kind of size and talent you need at the RB position. Higdon just doesn't have the talent and Evans is a great change of pace back- he's not a starter who can run between the tackles 20 times a game- he's a space player.
Samuels is a freak athlete. He wowed with his athleticism at all the combines and camps. He was very raw though and he played terrible HS competition in BFE New Mexico. He was just passed on the depth chart by an undersized walk-on. Not good for him.

I’m camping up in Pine, AZ.  Had to get out of the heat.

Saw that the Gators struggle for a quarter before playing like they’re supposed to.  It’s gonna be a long season, I fear.

Big Ten took a hit today.  Wiscy and UNL in big upsets, then Md and Rutgers getting spanked.

Nice to see FSU struggle, though.

“Struggle” is putting it nicely. Seminoles put on one of the worst showings on offense I’ve seen in a while. Only 6 or 7 first downs all game. Taggart is in way over his head.

Title: Re: I Can Sing All Them Songs About SOC 9/15

The last three drives; really predictable up the middle stuff. The Wolverines downfield weapon has so far been Gentry, extending two deep drives with long catches. Other than Gentry everyone else is playing like they’re waiting for the game to end already.
Hmmm, I think this referred to drives 2-4, but lets see if I can go though the first four (I got through 3, I'll maybe try for the fourth, the first TD at some point)
1st
1st and 10 out of double wing: Ran counter, which should be off-tackle, but a DE drives a TE upfield. RB and everyone else end up cutting at the A-gap, got 6
2nd 6 out of shotgun 2-TE with twins to the field: Little pass to the flat, kinda open, gets
3rd and 1, two-TE I-from: They run power, again an off-tackle you can cut back inside. They let the TE release downfield, rather than washing down the end. End comes upfield, absorbs two blockers and forces the run more inside (that shouldn't happen). The tackle doesn't get a clean block on the LB, who kind of crawls his way into position, and no one gets the other backer, who helps finish. The end and backer, plus the RB not being hyper decisive end that.
2nd
1st and 10 out of singleback two-TE: Play action on predictable run down (changeup). Pass rusher in QB's face, looks like that forces a miss.
2nd and 10, shotgun 3x1 with a wing TE: QB almost runs while climbing the pocket, throws late, gets tipped, ends up in receivers hands. Quite lucky.
1st and 10 out of double wing: Again counter out of this look. Kinda goes the same as the game's first play. The gap gets kinda shrunk, forcing it more up inside, though in this case, kinda off-tackle still. Gets 1.
2nd and 9 out of shotgun, trips bunch close: Pass, works through progression, dumps to RB for 4
3rd and 5 out of shotgun 2x2 everyone tight with at least one TE: QB holds it, 3-man rush eventually rushes him. Tries to run. Bad
3rd
1st and 10 out of Singleback, maybe te-TE: Jet sweep look. Ran jet, got 11
1st and 10 Shotgun two TE: I think this is a sweep, but it could be a G-down off-tackle play. A miss on a linebacker makes it difficult, but back finds room and gets 7
2nd and 3 out of I-formation twins: They run power, which should be off-tackle. The backside DT somehow slips in, and the guy who left him then can't get to the backer. Goes for 2.
3rd and 1 out of I-from two-TE: Power again, this time the A-gap is open. Get's 8
1st and 10 out of pistol with a pair of TEs: Go play-action on a running down. TE rips open on a kind of corner route (there's something more shallow and I think a deep route over him). Nice play
1st and 10 out of Shotgun 2-TE: This is that play that I swear is sweep but might be G-down. The playside guys gets the edge guy, but logs him inside, Evans goes outside for 9
2nd and 1 out of double wing: Inside zone, so between the tackles. It's the first time they did it out of that look. There's not much push in the middle, and the MLB runs into it, shoving people forward and burping out the other side to mess things up.
3rd and 2 out of the I-form with two TEs: They run power, a couple michigan linemen get worked, RB cuts back and it a little too fine trying to get it, gains 1.
4th and 1 out of the I-form with 3 TEs: They go with a true G-down run (playside guard pulls out and prys open hole). Lead fullback doesn't get much of a block, but enough to convert.
1st and 10 out of the I with two TEs: Power with that small back. There's space, but the playside guard gets whipped and his man makes the play.
2nd and 8 out of the I with 3 TEs: They try G-down again. The edge defender goes inside and both pullers seem to watch him. The back goes outside-ish and a corner gets him. Not ideal. Playside guard looks very confused after play.
3rd and 8 from the Shotgun two-TE twins: They attack with a lot of vertical routes, Patterson tries to get to a TE coming back to the ball, but the DB just beats him to it. (Pass might be a little aggressive)
So Jim clearly likes power out of power sets in a lot of spots. They are kinda up and down, and the G-down as a change-up was also up and down. Of course, guys are losing battles left and right, so that hurts. These are not technically "between the tackles." Probably predictable, but coaching predicable and fan predictable are wholly different things. It's kind of a pity, the view from the side makes 80 percent of runs between the tackles. You have to be pretty wide to look "outside" on that angle. You don't see space/gaps/all that. And then there's the flow factor, where plays that are "off tackle" can flow outside or between the tackles. (UW's inside zone was suddenly an outside play when TCU was defending it a certain way in the 2011 Rose Bowl.)

I don’t know.  I thought TCU did as well as they could, but it was a dam waiting to burst. You can’t count on Ohio State dropping TD passes, first down passes and stopping themselves on drives with false starts penalties.
Hell, watch the replay of Bosa going down.  He blew by the tackle who then dragged him down by the face mask.  That just lit the match. OSU just tore them up after that play.

it’s never been about how good a team “is”.  It’s about what they are capable of.  Ohio State looks capable of being a beast, but also of being mediocre at times.

Michigan doesn't have the OL this year to compete. Unless the freshman tackles Jalen Mayfield and James Hudson are superior to Runyan and JBB that is. And that's a pretty big IF. Wish we would have seen them last week. Would've been a great opportunity to get them ready against WMU and SMU. But nope. Harbaugh starts the upperclassmen who clearly just can't play.

edit: this season reminds me so much of last year. replace horrendous QB play with horrendous OT play. OBVIOUS to anybody with half a brain that RS frosh Brandon Peters or even a true freshman Dylan McCaffrey would be better options than O'Korn after Speight got hurt. Harbaugh kept trotting O'Korn out there for weeks though letting him suck ass instead of playing the younger, more talented guy and letting him work through his mistakes. Makes zero sense to keep playing 5th year guys that just can't play.

Kinda sad to see what's happened to USC and even more so to Texas. Of course, not all the schools can be top-15 programs and if a few have to fall so mine can ascend.. I'm good with that.

Also, you probably should tread a little more lightly around the ECFGs.  They see all.  They know all.  They punish all.

SDSU jobbed on that review of a fumble.   ASU gifted a possession.   Then ASU completes a bomb to the 3 with six seconds, and SDSU targets the WR, the ball hits the turf.  incomplete pass.  An odd case where targeting saves the day.

just watched the Mich-SMU highlights again. Even more pissed off at Sean McKeon for Patterson's INT than I initially was. 100% McKeon's fault. Had bitch heart on that play. Just stopped running. Didn't attack the football. HOW the hell did this kid leapfrog Ty Wheatley Jr? He sucks.

I'm glad I'm not gambling lately. I don't know shit this year, other than suspecting Nebraska would struggle to win 5.
I wish I had gambled. A friend of mine gambles and asks my input from time to time. I told him I liked LSU, TCU, and SDSU getting points this week. I also liked Boise but 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.

I know Oberlin beat them 7-6 in the 1921 after tOSU woodshedded them like 128-0,5 years earlier
Yeah, that's why I included the "current D1" qualifier.
1921 was a weird season. Lost to only Illinois and Oberlin. Every other game was a shutout including Michigan. Outscored the opposition 110-14. 5-2(4-1 Big Ten).

UCLA and UNL now a combined 0-5 this year.
The father of UCLA starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson criticized Chip Kelly in a series of tweets Sunday night, writing that the Bruins football coach is a "million dollar coach who bares [sic] no responsibility" for the team's 0-3 start.

ya know this could be considered to bring on bad karma, and the week before the Vol game........
I suppose you need to look for a silver lining after the Gators were out played by Kentucky in the swamp

Florida lost to Kentucky?  I had no idea until just now.

That's almost as bad as losing to Maryland.

Almost.

Don't worry.
I'm sure Texas will never schedule us, just like we'll never schedule Temple.

It's not exactly a nice way to put it, but I do agree that the INT was on McKeon. Standing still there is counter to all coaching he's received since high school. I do like his place on the roster, though. I mean, he is the reason Ian Bunting transfered. Because McKeon passed him. That says something about something. No doubt, though, Gentry has been the TE star so far.
I can't really think of an accurate comparison for ZG. The common TE comparisons around here are Butt or Travis Beckum. But ZG is very much his own breed. Could be productive like those two, though. Like Harbaugh said, he's becoming a complete player (blocking and catching). He doesn't have an obvious ceiling, either.

That INT was 100% on McKeon. He just stopped running. He was suppose to come back to the ball. Instead he quit running and then just let the defender jump in front of the ball. If he comes back to the ball and uses his big body to box out the defender it's a TD or incomplete. Instead it was an INT. 100% on him. McKeon is a below average athlete. Has pretty good hands but he doesn't run well at all. He's slow and can't create separation and he just makes a lot of dumb plays- like that one we're talking about. Not sure it says much him leaping over Bunting. Bunting didn't do much at Michigan in 3 years and he hasn't done anything at his new stop at Cal either.
As for Zach Gentry- he needs to beef up that upper body. He could be SO much more dominant. There was a TD catch he dropped against ND because his arms were ripped down by the defender. He's a couple plays like that this year actually. That almost never happens to Gronk. Why? His arms and upper body are built like a freaking tank. That's literally the only knock on Gentry that I see. He's got everything else. He gets open. He's fast for being such a big kid. He's athletic. And his arms are so long and his catch radius is so big. He can be as good as he wants to be. He's definitely way more talented than Jake Butt. Will he put in the work to become great like Jake Butt did? That remains to be seen.

Illinois takes the lead with a trick play.

WR throws a TD pass on the reverse.
