Title: How good is LSU?
Post by: Drew4UTk on September 06, 2018, 12:59:58 PM
it's hard to say off of just one game, and it's even harder to say because we don't really know if Miami is that good (previous #8)... but they looked solid insofar as play calling and sets, and execution.  I don't know if they'll get those lanes to open against the Bama's and Auburn's, but...

thoughts?

I think they are a good team with a tough schedule who played a vastly overrated Miami team in the first game. I don't think LSU will be competitive with Auburn, Alabama or Georgia. That's three losses. Florida, Miss State, Ole Miss and A&M are toss ups. I see 8-4 but a better team than the record.

that's a good analysis @bamajoe (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=29) ... I like the way they play- their style.  i just don't see it lighting up the world against what we know to be very stout Ds in Bama and UGA... Auburn is close, too...

Helluva lot better than I thought. I still don't see them having a winning season.

I don't know, they've only played one game.

So... You're saying UT might not be that bad?

Of course!  Them shiny orange britches might win the East!

As everyone agrees, hard to tell off one game but Miami doesn't suck and that was nearly a demolition until LSU coasted to the whistle. Also, I'm not sure dem Tigahs had to be anything other than vanilla in that one so, it's hard to gauge just how diverse they might be on offense.

I think the LSU defense is elite and the special teams looked great, too--that will win the lion's share of games but two big injuries in the opener could cause attrition to be a factor. In any case, they've got a good un in Brossette to compliment that defense. If the QB can proof himself versus top flight Ds it would, in my mind, elevate the ceiling to say, 10 wins.

Bottom line, they 'appear' to have the pieces in place to play with anybody, provided they protect the ball. But, just like Auburn, their schedule draw will probably limit the upside.

agree with most everyone that their schedule will do them in.

i said before season that i didn't have a clue how good/bad they'd be and that i could see them anywhere from 5-7 to 10-2. i think you could probably elevate the floor to 8-4, maybe 7-5, but i'm not sure the ceiling was raised much, if any.

i watched the game and remember thinking the qb looked decent, even good. but going back and looking at his stats tells another story (sub .50%, 0 td, 140 yds, 5.8 y/a). am i remembering wrong or are the stats deceptive? i thought he looked in control and poised and didn't put them in bad spots. which is a major improvement over what they've had recently.

I know what you mean, rtf. Live, the eye test was a solid pass but post-game, it dims a bit. There were some easy, dropped passes but the awful 3rd Conversion rate is what jumps out of the box score (3/16) to me. When he's allowed to set his feet, he's absolute money. When flustered or flushed, he was generally non-productive, less two plays. That said, I do think he played better than the stats indicate as he protected the ball and avoided some near-sacks. I'd call Burrow's game, against a good Canes D, a quality first start--but his performance will need to improve in chunks as the season progresses.

Watching Miami made me think of Georgia not long ago, some talent, but penalty after penalty and lack of discipline.

It's amazing to me that two different teams could look so similar.
