1. Wisconsin: Honestly, the only team in the "top 5" that didn't show any crippling flaws.
2. Ohio State: Offense was on point, but defense brought back flashes of 2013 and Iowa 2017. Not going to work against a team with a pulse.
3. Michigan State: Secondary, offensive line were major issues, but Lewerke and the receivers have something going.
4. Michigan: Point - lost. Counterpoint - played an actual team. Defense seemed to get sorted out, but offense still in the gutter.
5. Penn State: Didn't like much of anything I saw out of them Defense was bad. OFfense seems to have lost their mojo from last year.
6. Northwestern: Very nice job going into Purdue and pulling out a win.
7. Nebraska: The Lord beat Scott Frost.
8. Purdue: QB situation not ideal. But if one of those guys can play the team can't point up.
9. Maryland: Very nice win, just like last year. Can they keep their heads, stay healthy, and be a formidable team this year?
10. Minnesota: Rowed the boat to a comfortable win, which was in short supply for this group.
11. Iowa: They should probably be higher but I totally forgot about them and don't feel like editing. Also they were up 3-0 at halftime on Northern Illinois.
12. Rutgers: A nice win is a nice win, no matter who they play.
13. Indiana: Not exactly domination of FIU
14. Illinois: Comeback win over...Kent State.

1. Wisconsin- looked solid on both sides of the ball
2. Michigan- played a top tier opponent on road at night, did not bring their “A” game and still could have won. Defense gave up a fluke TD on an arm punt, but looked solid otherwise. Offense was way better than people are acting like it was, and UM now has TWO solid QBs. Still my favorite to win the conference, especially if Harbaugh lets Shea run more spread.
3. Ohio State- hard to tell much from cupcake opponent, but offense looks crisp. Back seven looked bipolar, but missing their two most sure tacklers in Borland and Fuller.
4. MSU- famous for slow starts, and rising to opponent level. They will be a bitch for anyone who plays them.
5. Penn State- thrilling team with McSorley, will have some barn burners.
6. Maryland- showed awesome guts and character- no patsy for anyone.
7. Northwestern- clearly capable of hanging with anyone in the league.
9. Iowa- traditional slow start was slightly better. Easily see them moving up
10. Nebraska- I see Frost working some 1st year magic- will be better than 10th
11. Purdue - looked damn good to me and could have won. Nobody wants to play them and for good reason.
12. Rutgers- I also see them moving up- they have solid coach
13. Indiana - probably better than this
14. Illinois- could struggle a lot this season.

Remember last week when we were talking about how great the B1G-E was?
Nevermind
What do you mean? Maryland kicked @ss!
-
2. Michigan- played a top tier opponent on road at night, did not bring their “A” game and still could have won. Defense gave up a fluke TD on an arm punt, but looked solid otherwise. This goes against every single take I've seen on the game. Did you watch the same game?
57+ minutes to score their first offensive TD.
1.8 yards per carry
The backup QB threw 6 passes, and suddenly UM has 2 QBs?
You should work for a certain news channel with that spin.
-
CNN?
-
What do you mean? Maryland kicked @ss!
So the question is:
Is Maryland the second best team in the B1G-E, or are they the best?
-
1. OSU
Is it safe to say they have the best offense in the Big Ten?
2. Wisc
Is it safe to say they have the best defense in the Big Ten?
3. PSU
Is it safe to say that there are no good candidates for #3 based on week 1 but...
Is it safe to say Mcsorley is the most clutch guy in the last 2 minutes?
4. MSU
Is it safe to say that MSU always starts slow?
5. NW
It is safe to say that NW has the only Big Ten conference win so far.
6. IOWA
Is it safe to say that Iowa has a great defense?
7. MD
Is it safe to say that OSU and MD really didn't miss their coaches this week
8. Mich
Is it safe to say that Mich is over-rated again?
9. Pur
10. Rut
11. Indy
12. Neb
13. Minn
14. ILL

You made me laugh OAM.

Contenders
1 Maryland - they earned their week in the Sun
2 Ohio State - game was never in question, even while giving up long TDs left and right.
3 Wisconsin - steamrolled a directional KY school.
4 Penn State - Unlike Michigan, they survived a scare from Appy State.
5 Michigan State - the Blue Aggies are better than they are getting credit.
Pretenders
6 Northwestern - Kept their dark horse B1G West hopes alive
7 Iowa - Steamrolled a perennial Mac title contender
8 Michigan - I had them losing to ND when I put them at 5 last week, so they didn't drop so much as other teams wound up being a little stronger than I expected.
9 Purdue - Dropping the Wildcat game at home ought to squelch any title talk.
10 Minnesota - the Red Aggies really are that bad.
11 Rutgers - handled G5 opponent soundly
12 Indiana - double digit road win; albeit vs a G5.
13 Illinois - survived scare from the Golden Flashes
14 Nebraska - has to spend a week here, after "cancelling" (forfeiting) the Akron game.
-
- Ohio State (4)
- Wisconsin (3)
- Northwestern (8)
- Indiana (11)
- Iowa (6)
- Purdue (7)
- Michigan State (1)
- Penn State (5)
- Michigan (2)
10. Maryland (14)
11. Minnesota (9)
12. Nebraska (10)
13. Rutgers (13)
14. Illinois (12)
It is a strong conference from #s 2-13. The Big Ten has some defenses. Ohio State does not escape the season unscathed. Wisconsin didn't really play anyone yet.
-
With one week of data, these are still pretty fluid. I applied my no one moves more than 3 spots guideline, (Mainly to keep from knee jerk reacting to put Maryland at 1)
1) Wisc (+1) - looks solid all around
2) PSU (-1) - so close to having Appy State part 2
3) OSU (+2) - O looked incredible, D had issues
4) MSU (--) - Utah state that good?
5) Mich (-2) - Did not look good for most of the game
6) Iowa (--) - Solid
7) Nebraska (--) - No Data
8) Northwestern (--) - squeaked out win over Purdue
9) Maryland (+3) - is Texas bad or an unhurt Maryland that good.
10) Purdue (-1) - looked good in loss
11) Minnesota (-1)
12) Indiana (-1)
13) Rutgers (+1) - looked less bad than Illinois
14) Illinois (-1) - Dumpster Fire
-
9 Purdue - Dropping the Wildcat game at home ought to squelch any title talk.
It would have, if there was any :)
-
!. Wisky
2. OSU
Then a drop:
3. I don't have a 3. Maybe Maryland.
4. PSU - nice OT win
5. MSU
6. NW
7. Purdue
8. Michigan - have to put them somewhere.
9. Iowa
10. Whatever
-
Penn State's performance shuffles the top 4 a bit from last week.
1) Wisconsin #2
2) MSU #3
3) OSU #4
4) PSU #1
5) Michigan
6) Northwestern
7) Iowa
8) Nebraska
9) Purdue
10) Maryland
11) Indiana
12) Minnesota
13) Illinois
14) Rutgers
Should have went with the Badgers @ #1 last week
-
1. Ohio State, until they prove otherwise.
2. Wisconsin, the best coaching staff in the conference.
3. Penn State
4. Iowa
5. Michigan State
6. Northwestern
7. Michigan
8. Purdue
9. Maryland
10. Minnesota
11. Nebraska
12. Indiana
13. Illinois
14. Rutgers

heh, I heard some talking head on ESPN proclaim that the Big Ten East + Wisconsin was the best division in college football. Didn't know we were allowed to just draft extra teams into the division, Wisconsin is a pretty good pick.
I've noticed the national media is putting the Badgers in the "elite" level the 4 East teams in the have been labeled, I'm also seeing that on this board. Is Wisconsin the Alabama of the West?
I get worried when so many teams get labeled elite, does that really mean that all of them are just really good, and no one of them has separated to actual elite levels?

There is only one elite team in the conference, despite popular belief.

1) Ohio State - class of the conference until proven otherwise
2) Wisconsin - team to beat in the West
3) Maryland - they deserve it this week
4) Michigan State - took way too much effort to topple Utah St
5) Penn State - See Sparty, except replace USU with Appy St
6) Iowa - Strong second half, now they just need to put together a complete game
7) Michigan - is it too early to start a fundraiser for Harby’s buyout? The offense is not improving.
8) Northwestern - Good road performance @ Purdue. Currently enjoying a 1-game advantage in the West
9) Purdue - Hesrtbreaking loss, but still a rock-solid team. No reason they can’t go bowling again
10) Minnesota - ate their cupcake like they should have
11) Rutgers - See Minnesota
12) Indiana - Road wins are always nice
13) Illinois - Looks like they’re going to struggle again this season
Inc. - Nebraska. Scott Frost’s debut will have to wait another week.

I moved Indiana way up because they had an impressive win on the road over a good program. You moved Maryland up because they had a big win over a traditionally good program.
Maybe I should have moved Maryland up more. I have a feeling from the way they played that Texas does not deserve its preseason ranking, but it is still an FBS P-5 program.
-
I don’t necessarily think UMD is the third-best team in the conference; and I doubt Texas is the 23rd best team in the country this year (but of course it’s too soon to tell). The B1G as a whole struggled a bit in Week 1 and UMD gave one of the more impressive performances, so I figured they deserved a high ranking as much as anyone this week. I suspect they’ll probably slip towards the middle of the pack as the season progresses, but who knows.
I’d have given IU more respect for beating FAU on the road than FIU. And FAU could well be a one-season wonder. They have some potential to move up, but even beating one of the Big Four would be a huge accomplishment this year, though three of them do look at least somewhat vulnerable
-
Look further East for another school that wears a shade of red.
Can't tell if Rutgers... or Maryland?
-
Can't tell if Rutgers... or Maryland?
I thought he was referring to you Buckeyes. Is my compass off?
-
Yeah, a little too far to the East for those two.
OSU is the only school in the conference I would consider elite right now. Don't tell that to PJ Barnum though.
-
I was gonna guess Indiana next.
-
Last week in parenthesis...
- WISCONSIN (1) - only top team to emerge without question marks
- OHIO STATE (3) - need to cut out the mental mistakes
- MICHIGAN STATE (2) - thought I'd drop them farther, then PSU and UM looked just as shaky
- PENN STATE (4) - the Appy State QB was making perfect throws, so I won't hold that against them as much as how bad the OL looked
- NORTHWESTERN (7) - probably picked up the best win of the conference, unfortunately for the conference is was cannibalism
- IOWA (6) - may lose some luster if NIU isn't who I expect them to be
- MICHIGAN (5) - not so much a product of them looking bad, as them looking about the same as last year, and Iowa and Northwestern both looking very good
- MARYLAND (9) - you got our attention Terps, now time to build on it
- PURDUE (8) - again, not so much as they looked bad, as Maryland looked really good
- NEBRASKA (10) - N/A
- MINNESOTA (11) - ok to be cautiously optimistic about the offense?
- INDIANA (12) - road wins can never be taken for granted
- RUTGERS (13) - at least seem firmly better than Illinois, and they may finally have a QB
- ILLINOIS (14) - oh no, even the defense is bad now
-

1) Ohio State: until someone knocks them off or something really crazy happens.
2) Wisconsin: honestly, they sleep-walked through that game. Sure they won, but shouldn't they? And sure it wasn't ever in doubt, but would any other result be acceptable? If this is really a top-5 team, they need to look better next week. Looked like a glorified scrimmage to me.
3) Michigan State? Maybe? Yes, Utah State is probably better than we thing, but still...
4) Penn State: credit for eeking out the win and scoring in a hurry when they needed to. Lost a lot of credit for needing overtime.
5) Michigan: they lost on the road to the best team anyone in the conference played. They clawed back from a disastrous first half in which the perennially overrated Notre Dame offense carved up their "all-world" defense. (Did you spot the sarcasm in there?) They scored one offensive touchdown. Not impressive, but played a rivalry game on the road against a team with more than just a pulse. Color me unimpressed, but their defense is still good enough to make them better than teams that beat up on (or survived) powder puffs, Texas, and Purdue.
6) Iowa: because the only teams arguably with better results are Maryland and Northwestern, and one week isn't enough to move them up.
7) Northwestern: because Texas probably isn't that good.
8) Maryland: because Texas probably isn't that good.
9) Nebraska: new coach, new system, weather delay. Could really surprise us. Probably just mediocre, and still probably deserve to be (and will be) higher than this.
10) Minnesota: because a close loss hasn't convinced me that Purdue is that much better.
11) Purdue: because they performed better than I expected based on the last few years.
12-14) Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana (in no particular order): winning is better than losing.

So UW went out and won its game by 31 points (34-3), most of which were scored in the first half.
When UW does that, they get dropped a spot in the AP poll, like this week.

And the team that bumped UW down a spot, scored 77 in their dominant win and still got bumped down a spot in the coaches poll. (Coaches poll moved UW up one in that poll, so kinda a wash for the badgers.)
We can play the boo-hoo UW isn't a helmet card this week if we want to, but it doesn't seem hold up very well.
Instead let's play the boo-hoo everyone hates on the B1G. In the AP poll B1G dropped 14 (OSU+1, UW -1, PSU - 3, MSU -4, UM - 7) spots in the rankings this week while SEC jumped up 19 ('bama --, Georgia --, Auburn +2, LSU +14, Miss St --, S. Carolina +2, Florida +1)
ACC dropped 12
Pac dropped 1
B12 went up 1
-
OSU probably dropped in the coach poll because it gave up too many to a middling team. They got bumped up in the AP because they scored 77 and UW "only" scored 34.
-
7. Northwestern- clearly capable of hanging with anyone in the league.
9. Iowa- traditional slow start was slightly better. Easily see them moving up
You left off #8 and forgot to rank Minnesota. For the time being I have assumed that you meant to rank Minnesota 8th.
-
1 Maryland - they earned their week in the Sun
14 Nebraska - has to spend a week here, after "cancelling" (forfeiting) the Akron game.
Do you honestly believe that Maryland is the best and Nebraska is the worst team in the league?
-
!. Wisky
2. OSU
Then a drop:
3. I don't have a 3. Maybe Maryland.
4. PSU - nice OT win
5. MSU
6. NW
7. Purdue
8. Michigan - have to put them somewhere.
9. Iowa
10. Whatever
Same note as last week (I just posted it today though, sorry): I only count votes in the compilation if they are complete.
-
Inc. - Nebraska. Scott Frost’s debut will have to wait another week.
Same note as above: I only compile complete ballots.
-
- Wisconsin: They are the only one of my top teams that looked the part.
- Ohio State: Giving up 31 to OrSU is a major concern and would have dropped them further if not for PSU, MSU, and M's struggles.
- Michigan: I'm not sure about this but for now I think that losing close on the road to ND is probably better than barely escaping USU or Appalachian State.
- Michigan State: Hopefully USU is really good or maybe that was just a week-1 fluke?
- Penn State: At least they pulled it out, but needing OT to escape ApSt can't be a good thing.
- Northwestern: Got a quality road win.
- Maryland: It is possible that Texas is just THAT BAD but hopefully at least some of that result is attributable to Maryland improving.
- Iowa: We'll see.
- Nebraska: We'll find out when they actually play.
- Purdue: Tough home loss.
- Indiana: Got a road win.
- Minnesota: Rowing the boat . . .
- Rutgers: At least they look better than
- Illinois: Ugh
-
Results posted, votes through me.
Some things I noticed when I updated the Schedule/Performance Chart:
- PSU's schedule is unbelievably favorable. Five of their six toughest B1G games are at home. Their four conference road games are against Michigan and the three worst teams in the conference.
- Maryland's schedule could hurt them. They are currently ranked #8 so, in theory, it would be best for them to host teams ranked 5-7 and 9-11. In those ranges they have two road games, one home game, and three teams that they do not play.
- Wisconsin's schedule is brutal. Their five B1G road games are against the five best B1G teams that they play.

I added your vote but it didn't change much so I will not post new compilations but I will include your vote in the totals going forward.
- Wisconsin is still in first but dropped slightly while tOSU moved up slightly so that is even closer.
- The gap between #2 and #3 is slightly larger and MSU/PSU are now tied for 3rd/4th.
- Your vote broke the M/NU tie so that Michigan is now alone in fifth, slightly ahead of #6 Northwestern.
- Yours was the lowest vote for Northwestern.

Yeah, I am not a big believer in Purdue yet...but for some reason I believe in Scott Frost. I will probably end up wrong and will adjust accordingly. :13:

I added @Anonymous Coward (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1513) 's vote. I will not post a new compilation but here are the changes:
- Wisconsin and Ohio State are now tied for first (both in the raw and after removing the highest and lowest votes.
- @Anonymous Coward (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1513) 's vote broke the tie that @Big Beef Tacosupreme (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1529) 's vote created between MSU and PSU at 3/4. MSU is back to being alone in 3rd.
I will not be posting a new compilation but I will include this new vote in the totals going forward.
